Developer's Corner / Re: Writing WPF styles?
« Last post by wraith808 on September 05, 2015, 09:34 PM »
Well, to use a windows 3.1 style, you're probably going to have to supply artwork, either from someone drawing it, or finding a picture of a window that approximates what you want, and chopping it up in to the resources.  There might be a pack of images out there for it, but that would require some research to find.

As far as how to do it, there are a lot of tutorials out there.  Here are two.

General Software Discussion / Re: What online services do you pay for?
« Last post by wraith808 on September 05, 2015, 09:23 PM »
Depends on what you call services, but I'll list all of them :)

- Dropbox
- Cubby
- Office 365
- Pinboard
- Xmarks/Lastpass
- Netflix
- Amazon Prime
- Hulu Plus
- Evernote
- Draft
- Gingkoapp
- Stackedit
- Obsidian Portal
- City of Brass
- Koding
- Photoshop/Lightroom/InDesign

+ various things on Patreon and Gumroad

I was formerly very selective about what I'd support.  Then things started disappearing.  Good services that no one was paying for.  And I decided if I liked it, I'd be one of the supporters to try to keep them in business.

And yes, with the spinoffs of FF, the Add-On API's and so on have been there forever. Will developers have to now produce *two* versions of each add-ons, with different backbones? Some of the small hobbyist add-on devs simply will collapse and retire their add-on!

Why would they have to create two versions?  This seems like it would just need one.

For some time we’ve heard from add-on developers that our APIs could be better documented and easier to use. In addition, we’ve noticed that many Firefox add-on developers also maintain a Chrome, Safari, or Opera extension with similar functionality. We would like add-on development to be more like Web development: the same code should run in multiple browsers according to behavior set by standards, with comprehensive documentation available from multiple vendors.

That doesn't say what you're inferring.

Well, this is why I'm thrashing a little. So I'm guessing "Firefox Main Branch" will use the new API. What about Pale Moon? And what about Comodo IceDragon that's forked off FF 38.x?

They'd choose whether to integrate it, I'd suppose.  But that would be their choice.

Or the evernote webclipper.  You can choose to store a selection, the page, or just the bookmark.  There are a lot of them out there... and I haven't decided on an option totally.

Delicious and Pinboard are two that haven't been mentioned.

You can also use IFTT to link some of them to create the solution that you want.

Living Room / Re: In a world free from ads, one font reigns supreme. COMIC SANS!
« Last post by wraith808 on September 05, 2015, 12:13 PM »
There are other, more constructive ways to do it.  Like mouser said, it's not a choice between comics sans or some other stupid trick and ads.  There are creative ways to monetize your site and not use ads.  The comic sans bit?  I just won't go to the site.

To me that's throwing out babies with bathwater.

Depending heavily on which version of FireFox is involved (because they have mucked around with the settings about the last five versions!), at least with my Comodo IceDragon version of the settings, what about
Tools/Options/Content/Advanced font section/
And then uncheck "allow pages to choose their own fonts instead of my defaults above"?

If you can fix it with as little effort as possible, then make some site's "silliness" (in whatever random form), then you just go back to your stuff and let it go out of sight out of mind.

And even besides malware, the "either-or" said *ads*, and I want those to include the site's own increasingly obnoxious focus-stealing pop-ups!

You can.  But I don't want to.  I look at it as a direct way to annoy you in order to get you to pay.  At that point, instead of going around, I just don't go.  It might seem extreme, but that's my approach.  I'll use adblockers- and whitelist once I see the ads are ok.  That's pretty easy to do.  And I'll pay if the site is worth it.  But what they probably think is cute, to me is stupid.  And when I see stupid, I'm not likely to go through hoops just to get around it.  It's not something that I *need*.  That's the reason that I don't go to a lot of sites I stopped going to when they changed to something stupid.  It's not like I need their content.  And apparently, it's not like they need my view.  So we're both happier.

Oh, since I feel a rant coming on....if you as a company run a site, don't get on your site's forums pleading for money for memberships to help defray server and bandwidth costs (and whine about people who block ads) when you as a company spent $25 million buying that site in the first place. I'm looking directly at you Conde Nast and Ars Technica.

That's why I don't go.  No matter how compelling the clickbait title might be.  Let's rant together!

From a different perspective, I actually like the news.  What kept me in one browser or another was really the availability of add-ons.  Some are on Chrome, so that even though i want to move- to try Pale Moon or something else- I find that I can't.  I need this one for work, or that one for home.  And even if there is a similar one on another platform, getting used to the changes and differences is a point of resistance in change.  Using something different is enough of a point of resistance.  We don't need more, IMO.

The reason I'm still on iOS?  The apps.  That's the lock in.  And that's the same for any platform.  The accessories are what keep you there in general, even as frustration mounts.  Removing that seems like it would be a good thing, which is why I'm really surprised at the negativity towards it.  And I haven't seen any argument that trumps that, which makes me think that with the uniform negativity towards it... I'm missing something.

Can anyone clue me in?

I think they turned it off, because I am not seeing Comic Sans any more, or the extra yellow bar at the top with the cute little pro Comic Sans quips. :(

To be honest, I'd rather have the Comic Sans on every site, rather than the ads. I have never heard of anyone's PC becoming infected with malware and it being legitimately blamed on Comic Sans.

And a Greasemonkey script that changes all instances of Comic Sans found on any page, to Arial, would be trivial.

Of course if every site did something like this and each chose a different goofy font, it could become a bit more difficult.

There is a long running Papyrus joke at SitePoint, complete with screenshots of what the site would look like in all Papyrus, and it's a hoot...better than Comic Sans.  ;D

I have no problem if you guys do A and B first. What I'm suggesting is that we go live with plenty of C.

Unless someone volunteers to make that content, and to coordinate the making of content, that's a massive effort on top of a massive effort that's already taxing mouser.  So I'd say first things first.  Get the CMS up, get some testing like with the forums, and get it to a stable experience that represents the site.  Then the content can come organically as the tools give more people the ability to create the content.

Still, it seem somebody at MS or GitHub should have caught this bug long ago.  Is it that uncommon to make private repos on GitHub?

You have to be a paying customer in order to make private repos (One of the reason I use bitbucket more).  Not sure how rare that is.

^ Ah okay - you had moved the info-center - I thought you were talking about the default setting.

I still wonder if the info-center / active-thread should be on top in the default setting (I guess it would have to be separated from the other info, but dont know really - must try it at the top myself, see how I like it).
Try it Tom, because at whatever level of fanciness you work on, "nothing else matters". The scripts behind it are Turbo Fast at collecting posts, and if you look at time stamps (in the same area) you know that if you check it 4x a day you're mostly caught up. At worst, if you *know* there's a thread missing like my Ludum Dare adventures, you turn to one of the bigger pages and find it. But it really is damn close to a Golden Mean to keep reg DC folks updated.

Or just use Unread: All and always *know* you're up to date... right? I'm confused why people like the other approach frankly. It seems haphazard. But I've certainly come to realize that my consistent use of Unread: All pages is not really the norm, so maybe I'm the weirdo. :D

- Oshyan

Maybe not the norm, but it is the approach that I use also. :)

ALSO, some people are unnecessarily hoarding bananas because at the time they got (or requested) theirs, nobody was worried about running out (no one realized that everyone would want bananas), or they thought they'd need more than they actually did. If we got serious about IPV4 address recycling/reclaiming, I think there'd be quite a few more years of availability.

Now, that's just bananas!

In exploring this forum, if I click on 'bottom', it gives me a choice of 'top' or 'last'.
When I click on 'top', it gives me 'bottom' and 'last'.
I'm just letting you guys know that there is something seriously wrong here!
If you click on 'top', it should take you to where it says 'top'.
And when you click on 'bottom', you should go to where it says 'bottom'.
It's ass-backwards! You guys? Hello?

i'm not sure i understand what you're saying, but let me give a rundown of what the links (are supposed to) do:
  • bottom: goes to the BOTTOM of the current page (this link is shown at top of current page)
  • top: goes to the TOP of the current page (this link is shown at bottom of current page)
  • last: goes to the last post of the last page of a multi-page thread (shown both at top and bottom of pages; maybe should be changed to not show if the thread is only one page long)
  • prev: goes to previous page
  • next: goes to next page

personally i never use any of these links, for what that's worth

They seem to work as you've laid it out... and it makes sense to me :)

^ That's in the original post.  And it wasn't a bug in Visual Studio, which is the reason that the thread wasn't titled as such.  It was because of a bug in the OSS git implementation that was an option in VS.

From that first link:

Scott Hanselman, Phil Haack, the GitHub team and Microsoft have all been in contact with me about this. Unlike the title of this post suggests, this is actually a problem with the GitHub extension that ships with Visual Stuido 2015. The GitHub Extension for Visual Studio is an open source project primarily maintained by GitHub but was initially jointly developed with Microsoft.

One minor thing: "Extract page" will not lead to "Delete page".

It will if you do it in the way that was described.

I want to delete page 2 of a 10 page document.  So I select page 1, and pages 3-10, and extract them.  I end up with a document that does not have page 2.

I've seen a lot of talk towards justified, though IMO unjustified is warranted at times.

On a side note, how hard would it be to have a user-templatable area * near the top/bottom of a given page?

can you elaborate on what you had in mind for me to add?

I think that the way that you're doing it, i.e. coding the customizations and then making a label available, would be better than giving the users the ability to add code to the page.  Spammer and Security nightmare, IMO.
