Living Room / Re: Two Mysterious folders

Thanks - I'd forgotten the security tab because it wasn't there !!!

I had to disable Simple File Sharing before you can do that - how simple can you get ;)

They were MS updates - presumably they belonged to a previous incarnation of System as a hangover from a previous installation.

I do wish MS would let you specify where all this crap should be put - it would be much clearer and easier to clean up when their installers fail to do so.

You are probably right Zaine, if it is MS's way of doing that though it is bloody stupid!!

How can anyone think it is good to have folders on your system that can't be accessed? How do I know what is actually in there? Properties tells me they are 0 buyes - but are they or is it just that Properties can't read the contents? Also what if files inside those folders are in alternate streams.

Presumably if they are not accessible AV software can't scan the contents either.

I can't restore to before their appearance for two reasons ...

1) I don't allow System Restore to run on external USB drives - it is meaningless anyway on those drives.
2) Even if I did run SR on the drive the newest folder dates back to the beginning of March - therefore both of them have been there since before I reinstalled Windows and are therefore not related to current Windows update activity.

Is there any way to take ownership of folders that are inaccessible?

Living Room / Two Mysterious folders

I have two folders on one of my partitions which look as though they have been generated by Windows Update at some point.

I can't delete either of them (even using unlocker to delete them at boot time).

Anyone got any idea what they are and how to get rid of them?

The folders consist of a folder in the root directory which is totally numerical. Inside that there is a folder called 'update' which is inaccessible and says it has a size of 0 bytes.

The two top level folders are:

2ba8be635012972efbcd7831
56b279a56e198578bd546dca2c7ed3

If anyone has these anywhere on their system can you look in the update folder and see what the update was!!

This is typical of sloppy MS - they splatter updates on every drive and partition (whatever seems to randomly take their fancy at the time). In this case the folders can't actually be any use because they have placed them on a removable drive and nothing seems to cease functioning when the drive is switched off!

My pet gripes are the number of time I have downloaded Yahoo, Google (and to a lesser extent Microsoft) search engines and toolbars. Just imagine the amount of bandwidth and time that could be saved if they stopped bundling these in practically every internet download these days. I really can't see how it serves anyone's best interests - the software seller gets a few bucks and pissed of customers, the group of three get pissed off potential customers and I have to uninstall unwanted crap (yet again) because it wasn't made clear in the intstaller! How does that help anyone?

For me PD7 opens quicker than Windows Explorer - which given that Explorer is in memory and PD7 has to load from disc is pretty impressive!

It is also slightly faster to open than Directory Opus (which again is in memory because ll I need to do is double click the system tray icon).

On the subject of ripoffs ...

I have 3 experiences of my credit card being charged without my knowledge. Two of those were in the US and one in Spain.

Does that mean I should not do business with anyone in the US or Europe ?

Maybe I should build a wall around my home and never see anyone again!!!!

I have downloaded numerous GAOTD apps and never found one with a viruse or any other problem. You have to be selective of what you download though because they do have a lot of useless stuff. Choosing what you want to try is called having discrimination!

If you want RAW processing try Pixmantec RawShooter Essentials. This is the package that Adobe bought and the team that created it moved into the LightRoom team.

It isn't LightRoom and is no longer developed but it is free and the Raw conversion is excellent (assuming your camera RAW format is old enough to be supported).

There is one snag - Adobe no longer support registration of the product so every time the app starts it asks you to register. There is a way round this though. See this thread in the forums for a script which removes the registration nag screen: http://www.pixmantec...0&page=&vc=1

There is a download link in that message for 2006 v1.2 - unfortunately I can't remember what the last RSE build was as I purchased RS Premium (hence my free copy of LightRoom) and stopped downloading the Essentials versions. 1.2 is that last version I used and it was pretty good.

The thread above hints there was a later release so you may want to look for it.

Thanks for that summary - saved me a job. My problems with ACDsee RAW also include poor colour matching because its profiles don't seem to work properly. They were truly awful in that last non-pro version I used (and ACD acknowledged it in an email and said I would have to wait for the next version). Pro version was OK but not a patch on the other tools I have. Haven't tried ACDSee Pro v. 2 because I don't want to spend £50 on something I don't need.

The only program I still use from ACD is FotoSlate - which is handy at times - but they won't get any more money from me any time soon.

Living Room / Re: RAM PROBLEM?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 05, 2008, 05:55 PM »
To check IE to see if you have the plugins probably the best bet is to install them - at least then you will have the latest version. The worse that can happen is that the installer says they are already installed and reufse to install again or offer to uninstall them. If you really want to check in IE 7 got to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or disable add-ons and you will see them all listed. If you still have IE 6 then there isn't this window but you can see (in some cryptic form) what is installed by going to Tools > Options and look for a button that says "Objects" - sorry I don't heve IE6 on any machines and I can't remember where it is.

Updating your BIOS is an 'at your own risk' option but I have never had any problems personally. There is the possibility however that you could kill your machine if it fails. If you want to give it a go make sure that your Windows is as uncluttered as possible at the time. Run MSCONFIG (Start > Run ... > MSCONFIG) and go to the Startup tab to disable all startup items, then go to the Services tab and check the box at the bottom "Hide all Microsoft services" then hit disable all. Click OK and allow Windows to restart. You now have a system which has Windows start with the minimum of extra stuff loading at startup and you can do the BIOS update. When you have finished run MSCONFIG again and check "Normal Startup" and then click OK and all windows to restart and your system will be back to normal.

Re. the memory module you have - if it is generic there is absolutely no way to know what valtage it expects but I suspect it would be 2.5V which seems to be the norm for DDR memory but it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and since it could have been made by anybody there is no way to find out. Lots of problems I have encountered over the years have been traced back to 'generic' RAM. I am not sure where it all comes from but I suspect that it is probably the stuff that comes of the production lines of the big companies that fails quality testing because it only just achieves spec. I could be wrong but generic RAM is to be avoided and it got particularly bad in the early days of DDR technology when it was very hit and miss whether to expect generic RAM to work at all.

I know you won't like this but if you want a stable system I would buy good quality RAM. The prices are pretty cheap at the moment and at least it will come with a guarantee and you can get the technical specs and support from the manufacturer.

Lightroom seems fine, very slick and all - but i dont really see that many advantages over acdsee.

Main thing for me is a good RAW engine - I always had issues with ACDSee and their colour profiles suck!

Although with the beta I had lots of errors and crashes so I will wait and see. Not using photoshop or any adobe tool (I was on the macromedia side of that divide) I probably dont get the full benefit of the integration

They do advertise it as an 'early beta' so crashes and problems are likely and par for the course. The production version 1.3 is rock solid.

General Software Discussion / Re: XP boot display problem
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 05, 2008, 03:37 AM »
If it is a windows problem then something is probably corrupted somewhere along the line. If it is really obscure you'll waste no end of time ttrying to track it down and probably won't succeed unless you are very lucky.

If you whave some spare space on your disc you could try using a partition manager to give you a small (4-5Gb would do) partition anywhere on your discs and install a clean Windows XP in there (don't activate it you have 30 days to play). It will appear as a dual boot operating system so you will get a menu when you switch on to ask which installation should boot. Don't worry about installing anything much in the new Windows - just the motherboard driver and graphics card driver should be enought to see if it works. In stall your boottime appilcation and see if it works. If it does it is probably a windows issue.

It is more than likely the display drivers but they are large and cumbersome collections of stuff and are troublesome to try and do anything manually to uninstall or install them. I suppose in an idea world you would completely uninstall all the graphics drivers and ensure that all the files and registry entries are fully removed before installing a new driver. In practice that will probly take you longer to acheive (if it is possible) than reinstalling windows from scratch.

It doesn't display Word 2007 file formats (you just get an XML tree).

This is at least better than DOpus with displays them as hex dumps!

I upgraded to version 7 (to install on Vista) but I haven't used verion 6 enough to know what you are looking for. I got it pretty much free ages ago but have used DOpus ever since. If you want to know anything specific ask (and give instructions where to look).

What if 32-bit CS4 doesn't support XP and you have to move to Vista? I think that would be a good incentive for people to move to Mac who primarily use this kind of software - I can't imagine anyone wanting to run Photoshop on Vista of any description - it must be an absolute dog of an app under Vista unless you really par Vista down to skin and bones.

Living Room / Re: Odd Windows XP installation problem WRT boot options
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 04, 2008, 07:32 AM »
Yes but the the active boot partition and Windows are on the SATA drive next to each other.

I don't want to change drive letters I want to make the Windows partition the active boot partition, rather than the neighbouring data partition.

I think it is probably because Windows Setup created wthe Windows partition in an extended partition rather than in a primary partition - it made the pre-existing primary partition active instead and consequently installed the NTDETECT, NTLDR and BOOT.INI on the active partition rather than on the Windows logical partition.

Presumably I can convert C: to an Active Primary partition and then simply copy NTDETECT, NTLDR and BOOT.INI to C:\ and use the repair console to run FIXMBR ???

Anyone know if this is the case or will I totally screw my system?

You could set up a filter that reacts to their emails by automatically sending 101 separate support request every time it arrives. Point out that they will be unsubscribed from your replies when they cut out their emails.

Re. taking money after cancelling the account that is fraud and illegal. I hope you reported it to your bank/credit card as they should refund that and take appropriate action - if it is a common trend they will lose their right to credit card payments which would stop them in their tracks.

System Explorer (http://systemexplorer.mistergroup.org/) is free and can log all sorts of stuff on your system including system traffic.

I'm not sure how big the log files will get but I'd guess you could write a script to process the output into the sort of thing you need.

For example here is a short log created on my network connections whilst running uTorrent to download a couple of files:
