General Software Discussion / Re: XP SP3 blocks .NET security patches
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 05, 2008, 08:47 AM »
For some reason 'Wupdates' thinks I need an update to 2.0 (to 2.1, I think)
on my XP SP3 box.  Of course, it cannot install it.
I know how to fix this but had to participate in the same song and dance
on my XP SP2 machine.

I think the headline of this article is a tad sensationalist.

I'm with you on that but I find much of WS to be the same way; sensationalism sells, perhaps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Editor for PDFs: recommendations, please?
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 04, 2008, 02:03 PM »
I'd be interested to hear anyone's experiences of using Serif PagePlus 11 for editing PDFs, as if it works, it would be an unusually cheap approach.  Foxit PDF Editor is $99, for example, about £67.
-rjbull
From the illustration on their site, showing pdf editing, it looks as though pdf editing is less flexible than one might hope... it's hard to tell.

This just in from the Windows Secrets (free Issue 177) newsletter:
I took a look at my set up after reading the newsletter.  Mine's fallen prey to this.
I had the same kind of nonsense to deal with on my previous machine, with SP2.
The issue isn't one that I'm pleased to have to revisit!

FWIW Serif PagePlus version 11 is advertised @ $29.99 at this link.

What the blurb says of it
PagePlus 11 offers a range of new DTP features, including possibly its most powerful improvement ever: PDF import and editing! Now you can edit and save PDF files, just like any other PagePlus 11 document. This fantastic flexibility cannot be found in any other DTP program – at any price – you’ll wonder how you ever completed your desktop publishing projects without it!

I haven't any experience of this software so cannot comment on how "fantastic" this claimed ability might be.

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary and 10 who don't.
-cranioscopical (December 03, 2008, 11:07 AM)

not sure of the maths here but isn't that 3 kinds? (I know that quote as 'there are 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don't...')
It's all a bit beyond me!  I learned to count on my fingers... gloves on/gloves off  :o

Got news for ya, it doesn't stop there either.
Just be grateful you don't have to deal with me on a regular basis. (I'm allergic to 8's and 2's!) :-[

can you cite an authority for that?
Not immediately, I don't find the need to keep style manuals on my desktop  :)

In the meantime, I think you should mind your p's and q's!

and "rs" is not a possessive but a plural, thusly no apostrophe.   ;D
It is correct usage when the apostrophe is used to avoid ambiguity.
One might make a case for it in "r's".

Thanks, Chris. Now you've got me droolling over this

FWIW I would like what I'd consider to be a top-notch SSD but I'm not sure that such a thing exists quite yet.

I don't think I found any computer hardware that appealed to me at this time last year.

Oops!  While you were posting I realized that I was being just too much of a smart-arse and so modified the post  ;D :-[

Interesting points of view from everyone  :)

For myself, these days I just stick with Windows because it's good enough and widely supported. My curiosity about other OS's has pretty much died out. Most of the fun went out of computers when I started using them for business, rather than just as a hobby.
