Developer's Corner / Re: How are these AutoHotkey script protected?
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 05, 2013, 07:54 AM »
After reading Lexicos's comments that any resource tool could look at an ahk script(not using countermeasures) I loaded a compiled AHK_L script into Reshacker.  Clicking around I got to the script text.  From there it was copy and paste.

I'm missing something.  I'd like to launch a .chm file using start command in a .cmd file without the telltale command prompt window flicker. Is there a trick to it?

edit: ok, it's the /b switch.  :)

Hmmm, command prompt still pops up.

I saw some mention that AHK_L can be decompiled with this:

I haven't tried it yet though.

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol 29.1 released today

Well, until I can see a reason for installing 29.1, I think I'll stick with 29.0, which is what I have on my computers now.  If it ain't broke....

I can't argue with that.  :)  I didn't have WP loaded yet on this new Laptop.  Windows Defender didn't like it.  So it can't be all bad/  :)

I'm giving Pale Moon x64 a try just for grins.  :)

Edit: so far it's definitely snappier than Waterfox.  I'll see how it goes. :)
3581
Hmm, now that Waterfox runs like crap on this W8 machine I wonder if Pale Moon will run well?  I tried it on my HP desktop running Vistax64 and it didn't like it.  This Laptop isn't a real dual core.  It's a hyper-threading deal.  Maybe that's why a lot of the browsers seem to hang up when the network is jittery.  So far Opera 64 bit has been very nice on this Lappy.

edit: I looked up the CPU and I guess it is dual core.  I tried a new hw info program,WinAudit, and it said only logical cores hyper-threading.  So much for that theory.  :)

I expect you'll be able to turn it off.  Like the "allow PLUS data collection" option.  If not I guess you just need to save the old installer.  :)

edit: so far I don't notice anything different.

Seems top secret:
http://www.dslreport...-2013-v29.1-released

It sounds kind of like the info sharing only it stays on the local machine.  It will be interesting to see if it's a buzz generator or a true paradigm shift. (In Miami a "paradigm shift" is when you get 2 dime bags for the price of one.)  :)  Although in Publix I think they call it "buy one, get one free."  :)

Also you might ask Lexicos.  He's the author of Autohotkey_L.  He may have some insights.

Heh heh. It used to be "feature creep."  Now I think the "innovations" will be less subtle.  I rue the day when I argue with my door lock to let me in the house or car.

Speaking of which, you are driving along at 120 MPH and the car accelerates to 250 MPH complaining "I ain't got all day!! Let's get there! I got other things to do besides drive you around!"  :)

WinPatrol 29.1 released today:  http://www.winpatrol.com/

There's some stuff about a new AI feature. I haven't read it yet.  But I updated my copy. :)

http://filehippo.com...winpatrol/changelog/

Windows Defender didn't like it being installed.  So I turned WD real time shield off.

Sorry if offtopic but MilesAhead please tell which version of Opera 64-bit you tried ?
Any link to download it ?

Thanks
Ska

I'm running 12.14.  I tried the update to 12.16 but I had issues with Hotmail/Outlook Login.  12.14 seems fine though.
3588
Now that I'm using WiFi the thing I notice is when the network is busy or sporadic, FF 32 bit and Waterfox are just about unusable.  I noticed a mention of Opera 64 bit.  It's been a long time since I used Opera as my main browser.  But I gave it a try.  I'm pleasantly surprised.  I have Windows 8 on a Laptop and the text on many sites is easier to read in Opera.  But the main difference is that scrollbars almost never freeze in Opera during crappy network response when it is common on the other browsers.  Opera seems much snappier both after loading and in normal usage.

It still does some stuff to piss me off like putting crappy bookmarks on that I don't want.  But I can work around that stuff.  Just the fact it's usable out of the box is great.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sandboxie lifetime license discontinued
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 02, 2013, 09:19 AM »
I can afford to support a great software program each year

The reason I didn't upgrade to the new license scheme was not cost.  It was the nature of the new license mechanism.  If the author decided or had some algorithm decide, that your license was not valid, the next time it called home it would be invalidated on your machine.  To me that's a rude way to do business.  It seemed like a pendulum swing from handing out licenses gratis to a draconian enforcement scheme.

But as it was I stopped using it anyway.  Messing around trying to stick very large downloads into the sandbox just seemed more hassle than it was worth.

But if it fits in with how you use your machine it's a nice software. I used it for years on 32 bit Windows and for a short time on Vistax64.  But it just seemed like broadband outgrew it.

Pretty soon the way it's going all the settings will be for placebo effect only.  Bill Gates to staff "Let them click on whatever they want!! But we'll still do the right thing."   :)
3591
I had a similar thing with Opera x64 12.14.  It has check for updates on by default.  It asks me if I want to update to 12.16.  Like an idiot I click OK.  Then I cancel.  So now I have to delete the temp folder with the update or it will pop up a dialog every time I start it asking to install the downloaded update.

Anyway, I do the update, then change the setting to never check for updates.  It puts all the crap advert bookmarks I just cleaned off the toolbar back on.  Then it changes the update setting back to Check For Updates.

I see why they are going away.  The sad part is, it's the only browser out of Firefox, Waterfox or Opera that has snappy resonse on my Windows8 Laptop.

btw the editing trick still works in the bookmarks.adr file.  If you import bookmarks from Firefox, just go into bookmarks.adr and delete the entry that says Firefox folder at the top.  Now the Firefox bookmarks will be at the root.
3592
You have to do the take ownership thing or whatever.  W8 is a lot bitchier than W7.  Also it has that secure boot crap.  If you want to boot a CD say Partition Wizard, you have to boot into BIOS, turn secure boot off, then boot the CD, then after you do whatever from the CD, you then enable the secure boot again.  I leave secure boot on just because I can't make backup images.  3.5" HDs are too heavy to carry around.  :)  I hope it does prevent rootkits because it is a PITA. :)
3593
Were you just joking about you personally not sleeping and hibernating
Huh?  Wut wuz it?  Oh.  I dozed off there for a bit.  I get all the sleep I can.  I should set up cots and charge homeless people half their foodstamps for 10 hours uninterrupted.  I'm sure they'd say it's a bargain.  :)
3594
I reverted to ES 1.2.x as the beta kept hanging until the index was rebuilt. I looked in Services applet and didn't see anything.  Also they say on W8 forum that if an autostart program needs to be run as admin, it won't do it without UAC prompt.  They create a scheduled task to get around it.  I have UAC set to show me no notices or whatever the lowest setting is.  I thought it would be better than W7 but it seems to be worse.  Programs in Program Files folder can't even create files in their own folder without being run as Admin.  Really annoying.

Of course running as a service just runs as System to bypass all the bs.  :)
3595
Hmm, I wonder if it's that Everything Search either doesn't use the journal or doesn't search contents that enables it to run without the UAC trigger.  I thought I had it set to Run As Administrator but I just checked and it's not.

It definitely uses the MFTs to get the index.

3596
You may also want to consider whether this happens after a SLEEP ....  I have this problem sometimes which I attribute to a driver not liking the sleep.

Good point.  That was my first thought.  Then I got distracted finding the hard error boot enable/disable.  Lots or problems with sleep and hibernation.  So far I've never tried either.  :)
3597
It may not be an application doing it.  Windows 7 is set by default to reboot on a hard error.  Since IE seemed to have a problem on install, I would try either removing it or using the restore point to see if you can remove the cause of the error.

If that doesn't do it then the next step would be to read the event logs looking for errors.  But I'd try uninstalling IE, if it lets you, as the first step.

Edit: you can turn off the Restart on Error to test if it's an error or program causing it. This post tells how to change the setting.

I'm going to go watch my LG TV in the nude in the hopes that it scars one of their staff for life.

...And for the late night shift I can do something lascivious with a stuffed panda. :D

The question is, was it stuffed before you got hold of it?   :P

I guess they don't call TV Screens "monitors" for nothing?   :P

LOL!

Maybe they should just call them telescreens and be done with it?

Welcome to the Panopticon! :-\

Hehe.  If I remember right, Winston Smith had the advantage of no monthly cable bill.  Even Big Brother didn't expect him to pay to be monitored. :)
