could we have a poll to see how many photoshop users there are around here - just wondering if people are going to be appreciative.

if there is enough interest i can start going through a long list of plugins - or, at least, i'll mention the ones that appear to do something useful that photoshop doesn't already do with a little patience.

cool, you may need to refresh the page to see the new cody - i had to.

General Software Discussion / extremely good gif editor required
« Last post by nudone on February 05, 2006, 10:30 AM »
i'm just in the process of doing the shaded version of 'cody' and i've realised that photoshop and fireworks aren't that amazing for editing gif images.

i want to be able to design the image using a large colour palet so i can shade thing nicely and then export to gif and select exactly which colours i can sacrifice.

in other words, whilst in the gif export mode, i want to be able to add and delete swatches into the colour table so that i can keep good shaded gradients. photoshop sort of allows this but it appears to require way too much right clicking and selecting swatches and just plain old guessing of what to add or remove.

does anyone know of a gif editor that will provide me with better editing than what i've stated above?

that is the
Now he just needs festive outfits for holidays ala google. It'd be cool to have seasonal logos.

hopefully, that is what we'll be doing Allen, mouser had this in mind earlier on.

i'm working on making the cody logo nicer - hopefully these test runs will be appreciated. i prefer them over what we've had so far (i think there is a definite progression happening but it's reeeeeaaaaaaaaaal slooooooooooooowwww).

my only worry is that the alpha transparency/blending around the edges is going to be a problem.

as the correct answer was found immediately we could continue with incorrect answers, i.e. suggesting what the image could alternatively be.

i think it could be a large balloon type airship with a long streamlined canoe hanging beneath it (pity that it isn't this as it would be a cool looking mode of transport).

Developer's Corner / Re: Is customization worth it?
« Last post by nudone on February 04, 2006, 06:28 AM »
it feels like we've come a long way but i hope that we are only at the infant stage of user interface design. programs that don't allow customisable hot keys (with a common standard set in place by default) and that don't also allow moveable panes and buttons are beginning to stand out as old fashioned.

i imagine natural selection will weed out the software that has a clumsy interface, though, it doesn't appear to be happening that quickly.

are we eventually going to find all our common programs are accessed by logging onto the net - thereby the interface always remaining the same whichever computer we are sat at. maybe we just need an online store of config files that are quickly accessed when you log onto a machine, i.e. the software remains on the local hard drive but a quick check to your config store initiates when you run the program.

looks interesting - i've tried similar progs in the past but they tended to lock up after a while so i'll give it a go.

philipp also has some interesting looking photoshop plugins over on his site for download, not tried them yet, but they look cool.

here's another screengrab - notice the 'groups' and the blue border that defines the 'work' area. if it was robust i think it would be a definite way forward from minimising windows - possibly.

oh dear, sounds more bug ridden that i thought it would be. i've tried running 'scalable fabric' after i have a few windows already open and they appear to behave as expected - shrinking and animating correctly. maybe i'm just one of the lucky ones to get it to work?

i've also discovered that windows like 'winamp' don't work with it. but, you can 'group' windows together for the ones that do work.

Living Room / cool or fool - microsoft's scalable fabric

this little work in progress utility appears to be popping up in various blogs so it's about time DC mentioned it...

microsoft scalable frabric http://research.micr.../research/downloads/ (about half way down the page).

it isn't perfect but for those of you into playing around with customising your GUI then it's worth looking at - i may even leave it running as it tends to fit exactly how i work.

disable the naff audio feature and play about with it - i think it has potential if they work on it further - maybe someone could pinch the idea and beat them to it.

anyway, it works like this...

windows aren't minimised anymore, instead they shrink to thumbnails at the side of the screen. you define your 'work' area and then have a border around it where the thumbnails will rest. you can then drag or click on active windows/thumbnails around the screen to bring them back into focus or shrink out of the way. this is all animated but in a rather jerky fashion.

i can well imagine that this idea has been around for quite a few years but not on a windows operating system. it's also not going to be much fun on a small monitor.

i just like the idea of having the small thumbnail previews of all the apps i'm running - it's unlikely to be part of windows vista maybe windows 2020 will use it - we'll all have 40 inch (at least) widescreen monitors by then so it'll make more sense to use this kind of GUI.

here's a screengrab - original resolution is 1920 x 1200, so i've shrunk it down by 50%.

(it doesn't work well with child windows like photoshop uses.)

i'm not bald, neither going bald, sometimes have hair down to my nipples and other times cut to 2mm and i regularly wear a hat in doors. keeps my head warm and during the times i have hippy long hair i have to keep a hat on to keep the hair out of my face.

i used to do loft conversions - hot summers, inside a loft, hot enough to make you vomit - yes, had a wollen hat on.

all useless information but hats are cool. bring back the bowler and top hat, that's what i say - you really aren't dressed without a hat.
