General Software Discussion / Re: iTunes Password Recovery (advice) Needed
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 04, 2011, 07:12 AM »
Scary site these guys have.

While it looks legit, it's just a little too perfect to my eyes. But I'm The cagey type when it comes to security. Especially crack tools.

Thats one of the reasons why I prefer open source software when it comes to security tools. Backdoors and Trojans get spotted a lot more easily if they're lurking in those.

Opening a port may not in itself be cause for alarm. But with a black box app, opening a port without asking, or (at the very least) without advance notice and explanation is considerably more worrisome.

Ding! Ding! Ding! ...Give that man a prize!

Did some quick research and haven't found much of anything about the website as far as commentary or reviews. Which is odd considering how big and fancy that website is. Freebie info sites usually start small. You'd think the usual tech blogs would have covered it.

Maybe it's brand new? Which, if so, would also be a little odd considering how extensive and polished it is for a non-sales site. Didn't spot a single typo either. It's all extremely professional.

I'd want to know a lot more verifiable info about securityexploded.com and the people behind it before I'd be comfortable using anything they offer for download. Until then, I'd be very cautious.

But that's me.   ;D

It really is spooky how much time we spend on the same page.

But like I said before the box was already completely torched ... So I gave it a shot. And sofar It hasn't made any other attempts to (Um...) share its findings with a mothership.

Never heard of it. :(

Me either, hence the question ;) ...But them again I maintain a vigilant iBan so it's hardly a shock I'd not run across it before. I had hoped you'd seen something of the nature before.

For the download, it might just be that it looks for an update, and has the messages wrong, e.g. update file 123.exe, no network, file 123.exe is still there, oh well... success!

While it was tempting to give it quarter in that fashion, the timeout just didn't feel right. Way to short to be a web check, and way to long to be an adapter check. Socket timeouts tend to be a real bitch unless you take great paint to slam it shut ... Which is of course in itself a rather odd behavior. Not to mention that getting the messages backwards is a pretty rookie mistake, and there is not a lot of rookies writing hacking tools. :)

The worrisome thing seems to be that passwords can be retrieved from browsers like that. :(

I've used many password recovery tools for all kind of things so its existence is hardly shocking. But it is part of why I use f0dder's fskrit and never store passwords anywhere in the system.

Sounds suspicious to me - why not just get your friend to ask iTunes CS to send or reset the lost password? On the few occasions I have contacted them they have been pretty quick to respond and helpful (not that I have shopped at iTunes in the last couple of years).

(Um...) *Shrug* Cracking tools are faster and more fun that sitting on hold waiting for tech support to rescue you from yourself.  :D

(But seriously...) I've had really good luck with this type of tool in the past ... This ones behavior just made me really uneasy about it's true intentions.

I did finally get past the rootkit (bootrec /fixmbr) last night and have at least partial control of the shell but the box still has major issues. I just like to play with one of the Uber infested machines now and then to see how long it takes (/if it can be) to get it completely cleaned.

I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with a purpose for this service that isn't just a teency bit disturbing.

indeed, seems pretty bizarre to me (right up there with freeze drying deceased pets)

Because nothing says dignity like being turned into a knick-knack...

Example: 1 Pound of ash is enough to produce 250 shotshells (one case).

Perhaps this is for a 21 Gatling gun salute??

Okay, first off yes it's a client machine ... I haven't lost my mind. :)

Google search results all seem to point to one password recovery tool, but there are more that a few things about it that just don't feel right.

It says it "portable", but comes (only) with a setup program.

It claims to have a command line version ... Which I'll be damned if I can find.

 - But seeing that the client's machine is already infected seven ways to Sunday... I figured what the hell and set it off anyhow -

The "Portable" setup claimed to be downloading something during the install. It claimed that it downloaded some-damn-thing.exe on port 53??? successfully. Even though the machine was running off-Wire, and in Safe Mode.

Now knowing the owner of said machine quite well, I do believe that the PW it claims to have recovered is legit ... But none the less, I find the apps behavior quite troubling.

So has anyone else seen/used/heard of this widget??

Damn you, now I gotta take the silly test (when I get home) just to see where they go with that question. Although I'd tend to disagree if they count paying for it as a slave against you. It should be a 1 slave credit for being a slave (yourself) to your own proclivities.

They don't count it in the total, they just point out that the sex-industry is largely based on exploitation of women rather than empowerment. That's probably true, but without getting into a political discussion, there are some regulated sex industries out there which do work, so the site not counting it one way or another feels correct to me.

Sounds fair enough ... Unfortunately I can't get the page to load now. I tried both IE9 which loaded page 1 at the office but now wont, and FF7 (portable) which stopped in the same place. So I don't know if it is a site issue or just my currently shit and about to be kicked to the curb Centurylink DSL acting up again.

Talk about cruel anticipation ... There's a roll of fiber coming off the pole coiled up by the side of my house right now. But! ...It's not scheduled to be finalized until Friday afternoon. sssSooo Close.... Gaaaaaaaaaa!

On a side note- I noticed a little flicker then it skipped - it seemed like the skipped page said something about how many times have you paid for sex...?  Anyone else see that?

Ahem... crud is very much like crap...

With the obvious distinction being that crap is occasionally extremely useful.

Also, I'm on the fence about taking this one as I agree with Deozaan

Living Room / Re: Massive Security Vulnerability In HTC Android phones
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 03, 2011, 07:32 AM »
So far it's strictly Android. I believe MS put restrictions on what software manufacturers and carriers can preinstall which would mean tracking apps like this very dodgy HTC android one would have the be vetted by MS, and I bet would not be allowed.

Oh great, so now there is an upside to draconian software policys... *Sigh* ...Sometimes I really wish I was smart enough to give-up.

So is this strictly an HTC Android issue?? ...Or is it more that the rest haven't been checked yet?

I ask, as I have an HTC WP7 that I'm a tad leery of at the moment.

Now if there's an (easier) alternative, and you don't mind sharing...

Afraid not, DPI Aware manifest was what I was referring to.

Ah! Okay... (damn) ...Guess we're in about the same place then. I was using VS05 (loved it), but had to jump to VS10 for the manifest (and hated it), and now I'm using VS08 and tolerating it because it gets me past the manifest issue (with a compiler "error") but still produces code that runs on Win2k.

Okay, honestly I've got both 05 & 08 installed and I jump back and forth depending on the project's needs.

I tried a slew of alternatives also, but the only thing that finally did work was the manifest file with the DPIAware string in it.
3587
Okay, that's impressive! :)

This large DPI stuff drives me crazy, I wish Microsoft had never implemented it.

Tehehe Try dealing with it in pure C ... That one took months (I'm assuming you remember that section of the T-Clock thread).

Really the only problems I had were with runtime generated controls and window position. Once I added the DPIAware stuff to the manifest the fonts all scaled fine on their own. Hm... IIRC TC uses a its own runtime rendered font...that could make a difference.

Now if there's an (easier) alternative, and you don't mind sharing...

Did you reboot between DPI changes? It can make a difference.

Give them time...Soon they will be edited into the videos themselves during upload...Can almost guarantee that.

Except then they'd hugely increase their storage costs as they'd need to maintain different copies of vids for different ads.

Na, they'd just chop up your video and then chain the bits together with some type of playlist script ... Not like they care if your video skips while the ad loads. Them eyeballs need paid for Ya know... ;)

Well...I know I'll sleep a lot better nights knowing that Mozilla is committed to churning out dodgy code even more rapidly and regularly than before.  :)

I had been toying with exploring it as a option, just to give it a fair shake so-to-speak. But this and the memory leak (or was it a hemorage...) thing just kinda kill the curiosity. I've never had a problem with IE...and incentive==0 at this point.

Hmm...Logging off may not be enough. But abandoning Facebook completely is still a viable option. :)

+1 - But then again I've got a 12-pack and a big bowl of popcorn waiting for November 5th...  :D
3593
While I don't have time to tackle this I just thought I'd mention that is sounds like a job for a stored procedure. If the procedure is added to the MySQL db to fire for any insert to table X, then it should be ably to fire an external script that will gather and add the rest of the info needed/wanted.

*Shrug* Just a Thought. :)

Wraith, Renegade, I understand where you're coming from ... I really do. But you're not helping.

I also get where db90h is coming from. He's got a good idea, a means to implement it, and a narrow window of opportunity ... To catch and hold the AV companies attention. And the only way to do that is to keep it simple. Clear cut. black & white. UnArguable-ly, blatantly fucking obvious. Anything that is, or could be debatable, requires one risk taking a side ... Which is not something the AV companies are willing to do ... Just because they are them. Corporate facades protecting an image.

In keeping with this theme, anything that is, was, could, or might be... put up for debate. Must, be removed from the table. Or the corporate monkeys will simply run shrieking right back up their trees. Where they'll then happily continue their life-as-usual banana squeezing rituals.

They've been coaxed out of the trees, solely with the anticipation of getting a shiny bauble of black and white simplicity ... That any 4 year old could understand. I.e.:

James Earl Jones, is unarguably, obviously, black.
Tom Cruise, is unarguable, obviously, white.

-and-

Rae Dawn Chong, is (incredibly hot, but...) flat out just not going to (S-I-M-P-L-Y) fit into either of the two above categories. Dig?

Don't be so eager for the end game, "the kill" can wait... ;)

Let me know what you think on the local USB drive thing (needed or ignorable).
-Stoic Joker

It would be useful if all of these items could be gathered in one application.  Nothing should impede overall progress, though. Why not set it aside for later?

It's a thought, but I'm sort of in-the-thick-of-it now. So it's probably best to push on through as it's not going to get any clearer if I wait.

Last night I got the SUBSTitute drive creation function working. So now there is an option to create SUBST drives with a built in GUI. The delete SUBST drive context menu option will be next, but that'll have to wait for a bit as I'm working on the humane society's web site today.

W7 gives some very quirky-seeming (to me) connections when it shows 'safely remove'. I'm left wondering, almost, if I'm about to eject my boot drive  ;D

Yes that would be the part I was worried about. While I know that the boot drive cannot actually be ejected ... I'm just not 100% warm-&-Fuzzy about the other drives that appear that way.

Then there are the WD SCSI drives that are actually SATA (speaking of which, when searching for something else yesterday, I pulled out a bunch of old SCSI drives, including a Plextor CD drive.

Any device specific behavioral quirks you can let me know about are greatly appreciated.

I had actually been toying with adding a hotkey option (something like Shift + Right Click) that would add all drive/device options to the context menu at once to allow coverage for those pesky chimera drives.

You're both describing what actually happens. People in public yabber on their phones forever. I think I'm describing *almost* the same thing, i.e. People in public will yabber TO their phones forever.

Oh god... We. Are. So. Fucking. Screwed...

All I need an OS for as an end user is to get me to the cloud, to my browser, and from there I can do the rest in HTML5 and beyond.

All I need from an OS is for it to stop shoving the cloud in my face every two minutes, or require a web connection in order to get my work done.

I have no use for the cloud beyond having it provide secondary offsite backup space for non-secure data and possibly some project oriented team sharing functions.
Amen brotha!!!

Seconded. ;)

Interestingly, I've noticed how often productivity experts are authors by trade. Which in turn makes me wonder if most productivity systems are intrinsically better (or possibly best) adapted to the tasks surrounding a professional writer (deadlines, milestones, meetings, submissions, tracking, etc.) or related "wordsmith" careers than most other occupations.

Or maybe it's more like those people who write "get rich quick" schemes - the only one that actually works is writing and selling the schemes. ;)

- Oshyan

That one gets my vote!
3599
People don't have productivity melt downs, most people have false hope meltdowns. Sugar coating it as productivity is only giving strength to the excuse that flawed methods are not flawed but you are the ones flawed or nobody is flawed and we all live in this happy rainbow waiting for the next Santa Claus to drop down the next God-like and infallible system that feels like raw hell when it severely destroys our inner identity and adds little to our external lives and surrounding.

Damnit man, that was positively beautiful! ...Hell I'm thinking about framing it.

There was a discussion in one of Heinlein's books about the quickest way to getting something done was to slow down. It involved an analogy of chasing someone by cutting through a planets atmosphere instead of all the way around the planet. I've always just added that to my grandfathers pick a pace you can maintain and stick with it philosophy and let the rest just be.

Uber productivity, and a case of 5-hour energy drinks a day ... is a dull ass-ed way to ensure an early grave.

All I need an OS for as an end user is to get me to the cloud, to my browser, and from there I can do the rest in HTML5 and beyond. Adobe is still building 20th century apps.

You should bite your tung for that. Cloud schmoud, we don't want no stinking cloud(s). I'll not be sticking my data balloon up into no cloud. 'Cause I don't want the first stiff breeze to whip that sucker over the horizon and away.

Sure, it'll be perfectly secure (Ha!) in 10 or 20 years ... But until then it'll be a friggin train wreck of horror stories about where ones data isn't anymore. Remember the good ol' days when you could get your data back in a month or so for $3,000 - $5,000? Now progress has made the cost ($0) irrelevant ... because your data is just flat gone. Unless you happen to be in a Russian coffee shop (where it's being sold to the highest bidder).
