The Form Letter Machine / Re: TheBat plugin for The Form Letter Machine
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2005, 07:54 PM »
it's definitely coming soon.
it was written by jibz btw, who visits this site, and it works quite well and is very generic and could be used for lots of things.
i just have to convince him to write a little readme for it.

jibz if you are reading this - see people do want it!

i'd be very interested in hearing about your progress and discoveries veign.
whatever you do, don't give up the parsing of pad files - making users type in descriptions instead of providing a pad file is evil.

a nice bonus would be periodic checking of pad file urls for updates, rather than requiring user to manually update.

Screenshot Captor / v2.00.10 and extra downloads
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2005, 04:09 PM »
Stefan was nice enough to find and make some extra frames and clipart, and suggested that we keep the main download separate from these larger extra packs, in order to minimize download size and so this is what we are going to be doing from now on.

You'll find on the screenshot captor download page now some extra optional downloads:
https://www.donation...hotcaptor/index.html

Thanks to stefan for help building this extra frame pack and clipart images!

If people find more public domain clipart and frames i'd be very happy to host more extra download packs.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Find&Run Robot owns desktop search
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2005, 04:00 PM »
that's exactly what i had in mind in terms of a plugin for FARR - a simple interface that would allow FARR to search the google desktop database on your computer; seems like that might in fact offer the best of all worlds - index full text search IFF you want it and install google desktop search engine, or skip it if you don't want it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and BBLean — some incompatibility issues

only after launching also says FARR should keep focus for the first few seconds it opens, so it holds in that case too.

i'm thinking of a plug-in system
that would be used to support things like searching firefox bookmarks,
and could also be used to do thing like perhaps piggyback on google desktop or copernic or yahoo or msn desktop search databases and return results from them.

the help file definitely needs an update.

basically they control how hard FARR tries to keep focus.
ignore - FARR doesnt care if it loses focus.
always - FARR insists on having focus when it is on screen
only after launching - FARR only regrabs focus for a short period after launching an app in the stay-open mode

this is an important point -
FARR does *NOT* search *inside* files.

there has been some discussion about giving FARR a more traditional file search mode that would also let you search inside files, but this has not been implemented yet.

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Request - Filter when dragging files
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2005, 01:09 PM »
i usually use a search program to find all the *.zip files for example in some directory tree and drag results from their, but
i see your point and sure, i will add this feature to next release, seems easy enough.

on config panel #2 in lower right try disabling all "focus preservation" of f&r.
see if that has any negative effects.

if you like to do scheduled recordings (like daily radio show), i've found net transport (shareware, http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm) to be extremely good.

you should also check out the faq at streaming media recording forum:
http://p084.ezboard....m/fstreemeboxvcrfrm7

it has good lists of software for recording various formats, including this really nice annotated list made by veblin:

in my next blog ill try to make a map from the website stats.

thanks, i really appreciate that!
make sure you read over the planned features for version 2 that aren't finished being implemented yet and add any suggestions you might have.

it's actually extremely useful to get suggestions from people who have tried other programs - and btw check the help file for F&R for lists of other similar programs worth trying.

lastly - i should note that when people add reviews of our programs to sites like snapfiles, it helps us a lot in terms of getting out the word about our site and letting people know about our programs.  so thank you for taking the time to do that, it really means a lot.

i liked wordweb a lot and purchased it.  very nice clean no-nonsense dictionary with nice search ability.

but when author increased to version 3 and decided to charge registered users to upgrade it, i dropped it.

it's already up to version 4 and while its a good app, it increased major versions at the drop of a hat and charges registered users for upgrades - which i think is unreasonable.  call me bitter but i just don't think that's a nice way to treat people who pay for your software.

« Last post by mouser on September 17, 2005, 01:26 PM »
our links page has the best networking sites i know about (right hand side look under Best Help/Tech Support):
https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html

i have to say, i don't have your problem, but i have very long annoying delays when exploring my lan network after periods of not exploring.  that is, it seems to take 30 seconds or so for it to re-establish friendly communication between machines on the lan after a period of them not talking to each other actively.

one thing to always try and suspect is your firewall.  anytime i have trouble with lan communication or any other communication, i try turning off the firewall and trying again.  once one determines that it is the firewall then at least you have a place to start looking for settings to change.

At the top of every forum page, in the User Info box, it now shows you "Your member group: XXXX"

This is your reminder that if you have made a donation to this site, it should say "Charter Member" as your member group.
If you have not made a donation it will say "Visitor."

If you have made a donation but it still says "Visitor", it means we missed upgrading you by mistake; please email me so that i can make sure to upgrade your account ([email protected]).

i suspect that you are right for most of the suggestions we are likely to get -
it can be difficult for non-programmers to get a good feeling for what ideas would be hard vs. easy,
and so often one gets requests for things that would take a month to do.

but i think it's possible to come up with ideas that can be coded in a day or two;
hopefully if we get enough suggestions, there will be a few that can be coded.

key will be that suggester really should work out the entire game and ideas,
very specifically; each rule should be described and it should require minimal graphics, etc.

in other words, design the complete little game on paper - make it as simple as possible.

it would be nice to update our review of virtual machine software to include info about latest virtualpc edition, but in case people are more interested in what veign is talking about, read our review of virtual machines from April 9th of this year, where vmware won our award for best virtual machine tool:

https://www.donation...alMachine/index.html

bottom line imho though is that it doesn't really matter whether you choose vmware or virtualpc, they both do the job well, and are fantastic tools to have.
