Living Room / Re: Help! - serious weirdness
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2005, 09:17 PM »
i wouldn't trust the memory checks to find problems.
like i said my experience with memory chips is that they are one of life's mysteries.
i would try moving them around, and if problems persist, take one stick out and run for some weeks without it in an effort to see if that was the cause.
it could be the motherboard's handling of the memory stick or the stick itself, so it's not nesc. that the memory stick is bad, could just be your motherboard has issues with it (or with any stick in that slot, etc).

well let me say rrtwister, it means so much to me to get support from members like you -
i definitely have moments of doubt and conflict wrt to asking for donations and the whole license file thing -
i really am trying to find a good balance for this stuff and i can't tell you guys how much i wish i didn't have to ask for donations at all.
believe me, if i could pay my monthly bills and get out of credit card debt, i promise you i would not be asking for donations - i am not asking for donations to get extra spending money - i ask for donations only as a way to be slightly less in debt than i already am.

and because i feel guilty asking for donations sometimes, it means everything to me to have people here who support the approach of this site.  and i really do hope we can grow into a site that provides a home for more authors in the same kind of situation as me.

and i also want to say this, for all of those who have donated - please realize that your donations make it possible to run this site the way i wanted to run it.  i think you've exceeded already what most people would have guessed a donation-based site could do, and you've all really made me feel great about the future of donation-based software, and convinced me that we are all doing this the right way - and that we should stick with it.  and i do feel like we are all here in this together trying to find the best way to make it work and be a good example, and my promise to those of you who have helped make this site work that i will always consult with you when making decisions, and we can make them together in a way that makes everyone proud of the project.

eros, i just love how you set up your site.
when you get a chance maybe you can tell us a little bit about what you used (i see you are using a version of phpbb for your forums), and how you integrated everything.. are you just using a standard content management system or have you done a lot of customization.  it really looks great, the menus, the sidebars, everything - just feels smooth and professional.

« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2005, 07:29 PM »
zaine has got me adding some simple border options.

i'm not talking about the kind of graphical picture frame like things, but rather just super simple single line borders, or similar things.
im wonder if anyone has any more simple examples they'd like added.

right now i have 4:

1) simple 1 pixel border added to OUTSIDE of image
2) simple 1 pixel border added to INSIDE of image
3) simple 1 pixel border add to left+top only (useful because windows by default have a pixel black border on bottom and right)
4) deluxe border.

deluxe border example:

i think that's a good idea - i will make one level back the default unless anyone thinks that would be a bad idea?

hehehe - just re-read the part about mickey mouse fantasia - gave me an idea.
i'm going to write another little test app that will create hundreds of processes, should be useful for stress testing process tamer and similar apps.

btw - id like to move this post to the process tamer section where it belongs, once you see my reply.

secondly, i will offer a prize to anyone who can reliably cause this access violation crash to occur
(by reliably i mean you can recreate it on demand so that you can test any fixes i might want to try to correct the problem).

thanks uwe and rrtwister -
i think needing to get a new key every month would be excessive - as it is, every 6 months might be already too annoying.

there has to be some rare bug in the program somewhere, because we have received now a couple of these reports.  although im not sure if they were all from the gui tool.

i'd give my left arm if someone could reproduce this crash on a regular basis so that i could track it down..

at least you've given me a memory address i can try to look at..
the only thing i can think of is maybe the custom hash table system i use might be having some rare dengenerate condition.. if i get lucky then the error you gave me will shed some light, i'll report back.

Living Room / Re: Network problem - can anyone advise?
« Last post by mouser on September 22, 2005, 04:18 PM »
i generally set my lan to allow all traffic from machines on the lan.
in other words, any machine on the local lan ips can send anything they want to each other, as long as its to and from the local lan range.
i assume that is what you are talking about?  as long as you limit it to and from the lan ips then i think you are ok.

seems some other people having trouble too.
wilders security forum for acronis: http://www.wildersse...orumdisplay.php?f=65
the good news is that acronis is already accustomed to doing lots of updates so one assumes they will be fixing these issues soon.

what about moving the printer from the 98 machine to the xp machine - not practical?
and you ruled out the possibility that the firewall might be causing the printer problems?

cool - i'll give it a try.
i tend to prefer local solutions, so i might still write an application to do this (what do you think of the name "Newgle") but i'll give google alerts a try.

General Software Discussion / program which lists new google page hits
« Last post by mouser on September 21, 2005, 07:05 PM »
anyone know of a program that can tell you about *new* google pages? or sort by date added?

let me explain:
let's say i want to find new pages on the web that mention DonationCoder.com
i can search google and get a list of 500 pages or whatever, but i have no way of coming back next week and saying "show me all the new pages which have been found since the last search"

if such a tool doesn't exist it sure seems like something that would be useful and not too hard to write.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Slow server or is it just me?

the site definitely seems to slow down sometimes, no doubt about it.
we've had a huge amount of traffic this month, and we may just be pushing up against the speed limits of what this server can comfortably deliver and it may be time to look for another hosting company.. unfortunately the monthly server costs are already a very big chunk (somewhere around 20%) of the monthly incoming donations, so that might be a little tricky at the moment.

yep, i'm guessing that i used an alternative way to restrict packets to the computer which is always basically in promiscuous mode, so your intel ethernet is not working - i should be able to fix this weekend.

Find And Run Robot / importing+exporting alias groups (nontroppo read in)
« Last post by mouser on September 21, 2005, 12:16 PM »
the new version of f&r will let you import+export+paste alias groups.
when importing it will merge groups with your existing groups so its easy to share aliases.

nontroppo you mentioned the possibility of having your opera database output in a format suitable for find+run robot?

here is the format for pasting:

each entry should be on its own long line (without Carriage Returns):

here is the text for the nircmd alias you made which could be pasted in directly via right-click:
1000>>>nircmd>->screensaver | nircmd.exe screensaver>n>lock PC | c:\windows\nircmd.exe lockws >n>monitor (on/off/low) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe monitor $$1>n>setres (width) (height) (depth) $$1 $$2 $$3 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe setdisplay $$1 $$2 $$3>n>changevol(+#/-#) $$1 | nircmd.exe changesysvolume $$1>n>mute (0/1) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe mutesysvolume $$1>n>reboot | c:\windows\nircmd.exe qboxcom "Do you want to reboot ?" "question" exitwin reboot >n>raise (window) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe win activate stitle "$$1" $$2>n>settop (window) (0/1) $$1 $$2 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe win settopmost stitle "$$1" $$2>n>compliment $$1 | nircmd.exe infobox "Wow $$1, you're really great!">+>cmd(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)

if it was exported and imported to a file it would have a little prefix as follows:
[LaunchAlias]
0=1000>>>nircmd>->screensaver | nircmd.exe screensaver>n>lock PC | c:\windows\nircmd.exe lockws >n>monitor (on/off/low) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe monitor $$1>n>setres (width) (height) (depth) $$1 $$2 $$3 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe setdisplay $$1 $$2 $$3>n>changevol(+#/-#) $$1 | nircmd.exe changesysvolume $$1>n>mute (0/1) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe mutesysvolume $$1>n>reboot | c:\windows\nircmd.exe qboxcom "Do you want to reboot ?" "question" exitwin reboot >n>raise (window) $$1 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe win activate stitle "$$1" $$2>n>settop (window) (0/1) $$1 $$2 | c:\windows\nircmd.exe win settopmost stitle "$$1" $$2>n>compliment $$1 | nircmd.exe infobox "Wow $$1, you're really great!">+>cmd(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)

i think pasting would be most appropriate for the opera database thing, so here is the format in more detail with only 2 of the nircmds for example
1000>>>nircmd>->screensaver | nircmd.exe screensaver>n>lock PC | c:\windows\nircmd.exe lockws>+>cmd(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)(?:\s|)([^\s]*)

what it means:
the first number is the SCORE followed by >>>
then the group alias name followed by >->
then we have the list of entries in the group alias, each followed by >n>
each entry could be just a command (OR URL) with an optional display text followed by |
then >+> followed by the regular expression

another example with 2 entries which uses urls:
1000>>>search>->Google $$1 |http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=$$1>n>GoogleGroups $$1 |http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&q$$1&qt_s=Search>+>search (.*)

what i'd like to do is gather a collection of the best commands in the next couple of weeks or so, and then be able to release version 2 with a bunch of commands already ready to use.  would be really nice to give users a nice collection of fun commands.
