Living Room / In-car GPS
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 13, 2008, 01:33 PM »

Okay, I admit it, I have NO sense of direction.
Put me down at the south pole and I'd try to go south to get home.

I can't tell N from E from W from S.
My wife always knows where she is on the compass but she can't tell left from right.
Makes for some interesting driving experiences.

Anyone here using an in-car GPS?
If so, care to share your experiences?
When it talks to you is it intelligble?
If you talk to it, does it understand and respond?
Can you actually see and decode the screen while you're travelling (seems a tad dangerous to me)?
What would be desirable features?
Is it any better at folding maps than my wife is? (I think she was an accordion player in another life!)

Living Room / Repeated drive corruption
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 13, 2008, 10:28 AM »
In my current system I have 4 x WD 500 GB SATA 7200 drives.

Here's my problem:

  • File corruption on 2nd drive.
  • System freeze
  • Chkdsk fixes on restart
  • Repeat above
  • WD tools say 2nd drive is A-OK
  • MFT went bad on 2nd drive
  • Chkdsk bails out
  • Reformat drive
  • Repopulate with fresh files
  • WD tools say drive is A-OK
  • File corruption on 2nd drive.
  • Gently whisper naughty words.

So, since data is far more important to me than even the hint of a dodgy drive, I'll replace the 2nd drive.

Can anyone suggest what the heck might be happening, though?
(In the past I've had WD drives fail immediately after WD tools say they're fine, so I haven't much faith in the A-OK reports.)

Thanks in advance!

Any useful experiences to share?
Advice, other than the obvious step of junking the drive?
I really wouldn't like to see this happen again when I put in the new drive.

It struck me that your tool would be ideal for those who are a bit uncertain about how else to achieve what Lacuna Launcher offers to do. Despite your lucid instructions on how to find path information, I wondered if some of that group would be a little shy about adventures in notepad. Just a thought, probably the game is not worth the candle.

It strikes me that this is another example of DC working at very its best.
Somebody patiently investing time to create an item that yields a significant benefit for another user.

Well done, aCkRiTe!

Please don't come and tell me that your particular OS is the bestest of them all

Interesting posts  :)

I suspect that many of us feel the same way.
Personally, I no longer much care which O/S I use as long as it gets the job done.
As you imply, any that I've used left a scent of "I wish this could do what X can do" hanging in the air.

Bless you, my child  ;)

Oddly, that wasn't the first thing that came to mind when I read "Windows TP".

Nuance's PDF Converter Professional 5

Thanks, I'd better take a look at it.  I hate these systems that won't let you download without you fill in a form and an e-mail address, though.

Let us know what you think if you do try it, please.
As for the form and e-mail address, that's just the modern way of selling your soul.

Mouser,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I tried the alpha version as you requested. I
think you have a fatal flaw in the logic... it actually did something.

As an example suppose Hollywood make a film of Shakespeare's Henry V - would the film makers have no rights to the film and the actors not be entitled to any royalties etc. ? Would a DVD of the film not be subject to copyright because the play is in the public domain?

This is his claim, his threatening and my message. - Exeter
