Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Note5
« Last post by tomos on June 19, 2014, 01:22 PM »
very nice!

Is there a keyboard way of moving focus from one note to another?
if not, would it be possibly to add?
one of the typical shortcuts would probably be good Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Arrowkeys or Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn (?)

I can confirm "Changing the title of the leftmost note isn't persistent" is still a problem - v.1.0.0.12

Has AWS responded? For example, when the S3 buckets were deleted. Did AWS offer any sort of recovery? An S3 storage plan can have data migrated to Glacier, which provides a backup. If that was done, wouldn't that imply that AWS would have a backup sitting on a Glacier server of the S3 data?

No, It's up to YOU to set up backups, fail safes, Glacier, multi-factor authentication.

Amazon provides a set of tools, it's up to you to use them properly. These people apparently offered a backup and recovery service with a single point of failure, which is not a great design.

Stefan, I would simply say:

Configure the application for use:
or,
Configure the application before use:

Then the user gets the Options, or the configuration 'wizard' - or whatever.

Edit// you could also say:

Configure the application for operation:

I'm always curious about cases - was there a reason you chose this one (used before, or was it just the reviews/price)?

^ yeah, I'd agree that 'configuration' is a much better word to use than 'commissioning'.

(You were using that already Stefan, dont know how I missed it :-\)

Thanks so far. But I am still confused that you don't know/use "Commissioning" for putting an factory into operation mode...  ;D

for a factory yes -
what do others think of the use of 'commissioning' for software? (as I said, I'm no expert here)

I mean, there's a difference between just "installing" an application, and be able to really work with it.
(I talk here about software in conjunction with measurement instruments, connected over USB, network or serial cable)

So we have to configure the application and/or the measurement device.

This part, the configuring, doing the settings, connecting the instrument, and so on...,
so the customer can really use the app for work at the end,
is what we call "die Inbetriebnahme" (the Commissioning),

(my emphasis)

I'm a bit late to the party - disclaimer: my technical German *and* English are not that great. I thought that by using a German language OS I would learn the terms, but I didnt - just gave up after a couple of years and went back to English.

German term: die "Inbetriebnahme" , die Anwendung "in Betrieb nehmen"
My English: the Commissioning

I'm curious - how did you translate these in the end?

AFAIK in regular language 'Inbetriebnahme' would be 'the implementation'.
I dont know if the word 'commissioning' is used in technical language (?)
I would simply call it the 'setup' in this case.

'Anwendung' translates as 'application' - but I'm not sure if it's being used as 'software-application' (?)

^reminds me of a story I heard once, about an older couple who lived out of town. He had been in the British army and received a pension per post. His health wasn't great, and he wasn't seen much any more around town. The wife used lodge his checks in their joint bank account. One day she unexplainably ordered a large freezer (the story was being told by the local small supermarket owner - his freezer maintenance guy told him about the freezer purchase: small town you know...).
Anyways, to cut a long story short, the husband died about a year later. There happened to be an extended powercut on their road at the time...

^good post

So the alternatives to TrueCrypt could be:
TrueCrypt software - presumed to be unhackable.
Symantec PGP software - "proven" to be unhackable.
Microsoft BitLocker software + hardware - presumed to be unhackable.

I trust him, I trust him not; I trust him...

Would love if it could remember a few 'sets' of language choices.
Not sure how if might be possible to display them -
  • a key to cycle through them?
  • a drop-down arrow somewhere (e.g. as in screenshot below) showing pre-selected choices (?)
  • both :-)

F7 & F9 are great

I'm a bit confused about the 'Auto' button - it always uses the destination language (the one on the right hand side).
Is there an advantage to using e.g. German=>English instead of Auto=>English ?

« Last post by tomos on June 12, 2014, 02:21 AM »
Summary:
commenting in YT using my g+ account; public settings:
the post/comment is only visible on YT when I am logged into my g+ account. Otherwise it doesnt show.

It could also be related to your sharing settings. For example, if someone posts a YT video on Google+, it will show up as a YT comment. And any replies made to the Google+ post will also show up as YT comments, but only according to the sharing settings.

the sharing setting are set when making the post - by default, 'Public' & 'Share on g+' are selected here - when posting in YT at any rate. My posts/comments have always been public. I dont see any way of changing that setting after the fact i.e. no way of now making them private (or have I missed something in settings?)

This is not related to not using my real name btw (my paranoia :)).
Anyone else having this problem? (A google search doesnt show anything...)

[edit] is happening to others all right - google YT forums - thread degenerates into censorship conspiracy theories, but I dont think I qualify as being worthy of censorship. At least I presume google knows about the problem, whether they do anything about it remains to be seen.
So,
my sole reason for using g+ is gone  [/edit]

Yay.

very interesting - the Vim combine-commands approach sounds very powerful yet logical.
Wouldn't mind seeing that approach being incorporated in word processors too.

The time to criticize MS (and by extension those who build MS tools) for dropping XP support is long gone. The inferiority of any successor doesn't make it ok to expect extended support. If the successors are poor, find an alternative. If alternatives don't exist hold your nose and move to that inferior successor.

I thought Windows 7 is a much better OS -
do you not?

... or are you thinking of 8?

hi Tibi
have you had a look at Options >Hotkeys ?
You *can* change the shortcut to bring up the QuickPaste menu, but I dont see any way of changing the straight-forward paste key.

In fact I think the Ctrl+V is simply the system default - if it doesnt work on your system, how do you normally paste?

In other words, any public posts and comments will show up for anyone. Any private posts and comments will only show up for the people they're shared with.

not in this case, all comments/posts were public when made; unless they've made some change & screwed up those settings - better check...
