interesting blog today complaining about nedstats development:
http://www.cynical-c.com/

The company didn't change a single thing in the code on my site. It instead took advantage of a piece of code Nedstat was already using. My good buddy, computer engineer Tom tracked down how things worked. Basically, Nedstat used a few lines of Javascript that did one thing, and Webstats4u turned them around to do another. The lines previous were used to increase the counter. Every time the page was hit, the script would ping Nedstat's server and tell it to bump the various counts by one.

Under the new regime, the script did a little more. Like sticking "Meet New Girls" on top of my page in large text. When the script got back to Webstats4u, it pinged a different script, not just increasng the counter but also running a program, Tom reported. This program handled a 48-hour cookie (mmmm, 48-hour cookie). If you hadn't hit a Webstats4u-using site in the previous 48 hours, the program hit another couple Javascript files, more programs, at a site called falkag.net. "A prime purveyor of Web advertising, including popups."

Find And Run Robot / Re: A tip - if you want to use digits in searches..
« Last post by mouser on September 23, 2005, 05:58 PM »
i think it already works this way-
once you press down arrow to go into results list, the digit keys work, even if you have them disabled at startup.
tab has same effect as down arrow btw.

another advantage of your approach is that the down arrow (tab key) stops the search, which prevents what kevin has pointed out, the problem of search returning results while you are reaching for the digit key.

ProcessTamer / i just found the craziest thing in process tamer
« Last post by mouser on September 23, 2005, 04:58 PM »
i have no idea how this was happening, but process tamer started taming things like mad, jumping the gun and taming processes even after just the tiniest amount of time running at high cpu.

after an hour of debugging it turns out that some mystery timer messages were being send to process tamer and they were triggering cpu updates.  ridiculous.  i still dont quite understand if anyone experienced this behavior in the past, it will be fixed in next version.  crazy.

fixes bug where location path options had no effect.

sorry about that and nice find centauri; seems my recent fix to get locations to show group alias names messed it up.

no need to ever uninstall, all versions can install over previous.

maybe there is something causing it to get stuck until a restart - try changing mode and exiting and restarting.

when you say "stuck" do you mean the dialog option gets stuck on full path, or do you mean that no matter what you change it to, its always displaying full path?

but to remind you, we normally try to schedule special weekends where coders try to fulfill as many requests as possible.

eros,
one of the members of this site, skrommel, is a scripting genius.
he uses and is very fond of AutoHotKey,
but he might be able to give you some general suggestions or a list of features he thinks are important, etc.
his views would be very helpful to you i think.

ok i think i'm finally read to do a round of work improving process tamer;
suggestions and feature requests (and reminders of things i promissed to add) are welcome :)

actually your animations and narrations were almost all perfect, and like i said it was clear you are extremely good at adding animated concepts to explain what you were talking about.  and i think this adds so much to the presentation! so i was mostly emphasizing how great it worked and suggesting that in those few places where you went to the trouble to make an animation but didn't add narration to draw attention to the animation, that it might be more effective if the narration focused attention on the animation.  just because the animation works so well to capture the attention of the viewer.

i think it's clear you have a future in this field - if you don't win this contest then shop around your work, you'll surely get a job doing this stuff if you want.

Find And Run Robot / Re: version 1.07.12 with paste command
« Last post by mouser on September 23, 2005, 07:39 AM »
sorry my bad - all of those examples needed paste.
so the paste part is required for each entry that you want to use to paste text.
instead of launching a program, the paste command tells F&R to paste the following text into the application you were using before you hit the hotkey to launch F&R.

so should have been:

the paste command works inside alias groups
you just type an entry like:
paste 432 chicago ave.\nchicago, IL\nUSA 11030

or you can use the optional description | format as follows
my address | paste 432 chicago ave.\nchicago, IL\nUSA 11030
my name | paste Mouser Mousey
my phone number | paste 212-555-2323

so you could put all of those in an alias group called paste

then if you are in a text editor for example you could hit BREAK to bring up F&R
then type "paste" to see the menu of
1) my address
2) my name
3) my phone number

then hit the digit corresponding to which one to paste.

« Last post by mouser on September 23, 2005, 12:12 AM »
i think this makes a lot of sense, especially now that you can use alt and ctrl to launch stuff.
so how about labeling 1-9
and then a-z

with f10 -> a
f11 -> b

etc

ok i took a look at the others, and i have to say i liked yours the best :)

i just want to re-emphasize my #1 comment again, even for the small things.  like for example you had quite a few scenes where you showed lots of user little faces visiting the person's site.  i know it sounds silly but i really enjoyed those little scenes, i would just advise you to try to perfect the timing so that the audio matches with the video as good as possible.

comparing your entry to the others its very clear you spent a lot of time on the animations - in my opinion it was well worth it - yours is much more enjoyable to wach than the others!

hi leon -

just watched the first two chapters so far - and haven't seen any of the others yet, but i think it's great so far.

couple of minor comments:
1) i think there are a couple of times where there is info or animation on the screen which does not have accompanying narration, which is somewhat distracting.  for example the pyramid showing 35% made the top percentile. i found it confusing to see images that weren't being talked about.  so my #1 advice would be, always make narration and video saying the same thing at the same time.

2) couple of times there was term not explained (ROI) - maybe your audience does not need this explained, maybe they do?

3) it automatically advanced chapters - maybe it would be better to always stop and wait for user to push to continue?

i wouldn't trust the memory checks to find problems.
like i said my experience with memory chips is that they are one of life's mysteries.
i would try moving them around, and if problems persist, take one stick out and run for some weeks without it in an effort to see if that was the cause.
it could be the motherboard's handling of the memory stick or the stick itself, so it's not nesc. that the memory stick is bad, could just be your motherboard has issues with it (or with any stick in that slot, etc).
