General Software Discussion / online-convert (incl. HDR)

http://www.online-convert.com/

I wanted to read what other DC members have said about online-convert, but to my surprise there were no search answers to my query! So I thought I would tell.

For a couple of days I have been testing several programs, in order to convert a couple of HDR photos into JPG. It is really not as easy as it may sound, very few programs are supporting HDR. Of course, every time I made a new query on Google for HDR Convert'ish topics, I was also given results to online solutions. In the beginning I didn't care to give them a second thought.

Finally, I tested online-convert. The speed of the procedure was a total surprise to me. This was all set and done much faster than I could have done it on my desktop computer! The result was fine.

No, this link is not the converted  photo...:

---
HDR photos are two or more photos (of the exact same motive) blended with each other. If on your desktop computer, the tone of the final result is very depending of the chosen settings - the same HDR series can easily vary between dark or light, depending on your settings. On the online converter you will not have these options; their system's fixed settings will decide the result.

As I said, the result was fine. The final JPG pictures were a little too dark for my taste, and the red colour a little too dominant. But, hey, HDR photos are meant to be tone-mapped! At least the fake ones... (fhdr).

My conclusion is that online-convert is surprisingly fast and easy to use, and gives good quality.

Just to shift gears a moment: ...

No, not just for a moment. Your post is on the right original track, Thanks!, this is what I intended the thread to be about :-)

Reading about the companies' many programs, I realize the hardest part to begin with may be figuring out what program I need. I have purchased quite a number of the kind that I don't use, because I never had the patience to thoroughly first study the market. The price tags on screenplay.com's products makes it important (for me) to pick the right version from the beginning!

However, I do like the idea behind their relative cheap "Word Menu", it sounds as a fine way to improve on my English-skills. The WhiteSmoke that I have, never really made any difference to me.

Just to understand better, do you have a knowledgebase open when you try that operation?
-cranioscopical (January 02, 2011, 10:30 AM)
do you need to have a file open in order to clip from the web? (just checking - it's not clear to me from the responses)

-oh... I had closed the "MyKnowledge"-tab.
Now I opened it and made a new clip, and all is well.

-I marked the article's text on this Danish page, and right-clicked Surfulater: Add new article.

Nothing else.

I guess it may be due to the lack of Unicode.  :tellme:

Is Surfulater's license transferable? If so, you can have mine, Curt. After waiting for more than a year, it still doesn't support unicode, on top of other issues.

-I am surprised, because Surfulater does support my special Danish characters, so I didn't wonder if Unicode was fully supported. However, I already have seen this message box too often:

Thank you for your fine offer, but No thank you. Wasting money is part of (my) life ;-)

QTTabBar 1.5.0.0 Alpha 5 Released
By ShiningMasamune, on December 30th, 2010
2011-01-02_150731.GIF
Greetings everyone; I hope you all had a great Christmas.  I’ve got a belated present for you all today: our hopefully-last alpha, QTTabBar 1.5 Alpha 5.  I had grand visions of releasing it on Christmas day, but alas, I ran into some trouble with the new installer.  Oh well.

Difficult as it may have been to get right, the new installer should greatly streamline the process for new users.  The bars are activated upon installation automatically, which should alleviate a lot of confusion.  MSI also provides much better logging then Inno Setup did, so installer problems will be much easier for me to diagnose.

Also, the bars are now automatically hidden on uninstallation, which should effectively solve the problem of the unhideable menu bar.  I noticed that someone left a Thumbs Down on SourceForge because of this “bug,” ruining my perfect score! (For those unfamiliar with this problem, the bug is actually Explorer’s: the menu bar becomes unhideable if any toolbar is uninstalled while still in the “shown” state.)

Unfortunately, the new installer means that this update will be a bit rough for existing users.  Please note that Alpha 4 must be manually uninstalled and Explorer must be restarted before installing Alpha 5. I’ve tried to include some code to check for this, but apparently it doesn’t work on x64.  So I guess I’ll just post it here and hope for the best.

QTTabbar may become even better supported and further developed in 2011:

I’m still alive!
By ShiningMasamune, on October 23rd, 2010

Hey guys,

I just wanted to post and let everyone know that I’m not dead, even though I haven’t touched QTTabBar in the last few weeks.  My workload this semester has turned out to be absolutely brutal, leaving me little time for anything else.  Alpha 5 has actually been almost ready for a while now, I just need to find the time to stabilize it just a bit more so I can push it out the door.  I appreciate your patience, everyone.  The good news it that my next semester is looking like it’s going to be very light, so I will have a lot more free time to devote to this project once the current semester is out of the way.

My two cents:   WordWebPro,   ,   and my favorite word processor,  Atlantis.

Thanks for telling, sazzen. Your post made me install Atlantis, and what a fine surprise it has already been. However, I also have WordWeb Pro 6, and when I (right-click a word in Alantis and) click 'Thesaurus', WordWeb will pop up and flicker extremely fast (more than maybe 10 times a second) and be useless. I must click Escape, to stop it. Do you have any problems integrating WordWeb Pro and Atlantis?

Besides, Atlantis gave me the same disappointing message that many other word processors also will give: "Sorry, our hyphenation module does not support your (Danish) language".

Thanks for the recommendations of surfulater, cranioscopical, cyberdiva, and J-Mac.

Am I the only one to be sadly surprised that it doesn't close on Escape?

Ctrl+F4 and Alt+F4 are simply not my understanding of fast-to-use hotkeys!

Surfulator ... It's web page rendering ...
chickenpunctuation.jpg

sorry, I couldn't help it, it just flew out of me ;-)
-----------

I was also very tempted to get the Local Website Archive, but then I saw their bundled offer, and suddenly it all summed up to a very large amount of money for a program I might never use... The painful truth is that when I had purchased and installed surfulater, the register box said (before I pasted anything into it) that my key was for an older version... Yeah, I already had version 2, but never used it and forgot about it.

Welcome to DC, Nick, and hope to see you come back again.

While I can appreciate that CoffeeCup has made you a wealthy man, I really think the iDeparted homepage should tell the potential customer why we should trust iDeparted to have everlasting a MUCH longer lifetime spand than usual web companies, and if there is some kind of trust fund to take over when uDepart.

yes, tomos, your link was accurate! Indeed it was April's sentence "Surfulater really spoiled me rotten" that started me! :-) However, still waiting at their store, I realize it still says version "3.0", and I froze. Is development still going on, or has the program reached a satisfying level of perfectness(!!), or is it dying?
- I am asking any SURFuLATER user

Edited:
The price right now is $39.50 (50% off)

even further edited:
Oh... on their blog the version number is called 3.4 ("Google Chrome integration and more in Surfulater V3.40.0.0"), so I guess everything is all right.

@sazzen or any other surfulater user: I am right now waiting at surfulater's store, thinking should I or shouldn't I? Do you have version 3? If yes, what do you think of it? If you were to purchase today, would you go for the same (I am not talking about price, but quality and user-friendliness)?

Young people always think they are going to live forever, but I have actually lost quite a number of friends and relatives when they still were young, and I don't think I am going to live for long myself. $10 / $15 / $19 per year seems reasonable ( https://www.ideparte...hart-comparison.html ) for the provided services, but how can the customer feel assured the company will still honour the deal if iDeparted.com gets into financial problems in the future? Or when the owner has died...?

I sure hope you may prosper in 2011  :P

I have now been using Aurora for a month, and I must say it is getting more and more disappointing. I will not recommend this program in general. Of course I still like the afore-mentioned editor features, but they are so alone. On top of the already mentioned ASCII file names problem, there have been so many photos that Auroa could not handle properly.

Then you have probably missed the announcement on the Grigsoft frontpage that you can get a 50% discount, during this holiday season, using the coupon code 'MY-XMAS' in the ordering process. That's an even better deal
-no, I didn't miss it, but I missed it in time...
It is not a valid discount code! Probably ran out right after Christmas.

The MY-XMAS code is valid. When I came back and used my credit card the code was accepted. When the code was rejected the first time I was using PayPal.
