N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: JottiQ
« Last post by Ath on January 04, 2011, 04:47 PM »
Hm, maybe somebody has some cpu-cycles on a linux host to spare, to relieve the load of the Jotti service? But then that Jotti service must be (made) capable of off-loading work to others ofcourse.

@worstje, does JottiQ add information about itself during the upload? In that case Jotti could put the requests on a lower priority (though that's not nice to the JottiQ users) but at least a temporary solution. And maybe you can now persuade him into accepting donations, so he can actually afford to buy more hardware...

An idea for improvement on the Jotti side (didn't see a forum over there) or maybe a JottiQ Quick Win (if not implemented yet...):
The 'Hash search' feature could be used on each entry, before a file is uploaded, because a database lookup should be much faster then 20 AV scanners to run across a file.

General Software Discussion / Re: Slash your windows boot time
« Last post by Ath on January 03, 2011, 03:34 PM »
As they are only Soluto referencing Assembly-cache installed assemblies, just throw them out. They should really be uninstaller properly, for that you have to know the original names of the dll's (that's shown) and use gacutil -u on each of them, as documented here

But I'd send an e-mail to the Soluto guys and dolls, to warn them that their uninstaller doesn't remove all pieces of their software, as a proper uninstaller should :o

...auto-download during installation. Harmless details like that can make some people go crazy in a non-productive way ;)

As unfortunate as that (user)behavior may be, the JottiQ installer really throws a big Yes/No messagebox, listing all prerequisites and their sizes, at the user if (any of) the pre-reqs need to be downloaded and installed.

It might be a good practice to pre-announce that with the download-link (but not offer any links), so a really paranoid user can download these pre-reqs himself from the source he wants/trusts.
This installer downloads the proper web-installers from Microsoft and installs the frameworks, including their proper language-packs, as and if required by the OS at hand. 8)

Undesirable workaround hidden here...
If it gets really problematic, I could add a feature to select something like changing the Yes/No to Yes/No/Cancel, to either Yes:download & install, No:skip the pre-reqs & continue or Cancel:halt the complete installer, but that could  lead to a non-working installation of JottiQ (or anything else that uses the script-parts I used) and would not really be desirable, IMHO.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 :: The Event Closes
« Last post by Ath on January 01, 2011, 01:15 PM »
A "NANY" installer would be interesting. Something to install all NANY software.

But that's probably a bad idea unless people all create an installer that installs to */NANY 2011/author/program name.
Hm, that's actually quite a Good Idea (tm), I really feel for a pledge for NANY 2012 on this one :-*

« Last post by Ath on January 01, 2011, 06:00 AM »
Hm, missed this pledge and it's interim releases, just found out now you've released, sorry.

Seems to work alright, but a few 'nice to have's':
- For a newby user it's a but confusing how to add a new url, some hint or menuitem would come in handy
- Drag and drop for url's would be nice
- Can the captured data be reset in some way, without losing all url's
- The initial interval is quite aggressive, a bit more conservative, like 60 sec., would probably back-off the malware scanners' warnings
- I like charts, but they really miss a time-line

Just installed it, and it has really gotten better! The extra features just make the difference, and the UI improved by applying 'Less is more'.

And thanks for the credits 8) it was a nice job to do.

Would this stuff from DevExpress be of any help?
Or maybe this recently declared dead (but oss) project Guiss?

'Jake Opines' blogged about the subject, and gives quite some info/links on it as well. (I didn't investigate all of them, though)

It is not a valid discount code! Probably ran out right after Christmas.

It's quite a pity that Igor doesn't keep his site and blog up to date, he's a lot less active than he was a few years ago. Sent him an updated translation weeks ago, but it's still not on the site. He probably needs a reminder again... :tellme:

Anyone know how this works with images? - there's no info about it on their site (that I could find)

I've been using both CI and SI for over 10 years, but I've never been able to catch them comparing images to anything other than size/timestamp. Selecting 'content' for comparing is quite useless, as a diff of 1 byte is enough to trigger as a difference.

Then you have probably missed the announcement on the Grigsoft frontpage that you can get a 50% discount, during this holiday season, using the coupon code 'MY-XMAS' in the ordering process. That's an even better deal ;)

What brand/model monitors are you using?
I'd like to add that Iiyama has a 26" model that has the 1920x1200 resolution, so I choose over the 27" model because that only has 1080 pixels vertically, and it has good brightness etc. (at least when connected with DVI, there's also a model that adds hdmi). I'm aiming for 2 of those at work to replace my 22" 1680x1050 and 19" 1280x1024, and already have one at home that I'm really fond of.
I selected it for both resolution and pixel size (0,285 mm), (age comes with imperfect eyes).

Thanks Ath for the feedback and suggestion   :).
You're welcome.
Like the dual monitor, I do not have such facility neither any of my colleague, so may have to go by the books and may need someone's help here in testing it.
Count me in 8)

Doesn't it have a command-line parameter to force direct update? Might be it's 'poking' directly into graphical memory, and the output is delayed/buffered by windows before being channeled back to your app. Maybe an update-rate can be set/increased somewhere? (Just some blind hints, sorry)

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Park Cursor Aside
« Last post by Ath on December 29, 2010, 08:07 AM »
I've been using it for about 1 day now, and to my own surprise I even like the concept :o

A few adjustments would be nice though:
- Allow for more then 5 keystrokes before the cursor is moved away, ~140 would be nice so a quick tweet wouldn't move away the cursor, while scribbling in some code would. That makes my app white-list a bit more specific: A keystroke-count per app on the white-list, and -1 for infinite, effectively turning it off ;)
- Allow for non-ascii keys to not count as keystrokes (and maybe cursor-keys should be a special case also). I'm using keyboard navigation a lot in a lot of apps, and reading the next news/e-mail using Ctrl-U moves away the mouse cursor after 5 keystrokes.
- The cursor is always moved to it's parking-position on the main screen, even when working on a secondary monitor. It would be nice if it stayed on the same screen.
But then I'd also like a location setting for each screen as well... (scenario: my secondary monitor is to the left of the main monitor, so I currently park the cursor on the left side (4), but when working on the second monitor I'd like to have it moved to the right side of that monitor. If I were to add a third monitor, that would be placed to the right of the main screen, and I'd park my cursor on the left side when working on that 3rd screen, and at the bottom when working on the main screen)
- A nice to have feature would also be if keystrokes where only counted when in some kind of editing mode/control

Looks like this has way more potential then I though at first sight

Now also tested on Vista x64 (in close cooperation with worstje), and we concluded that both the x86 and x64 VC++ 2010 redistributable packages need to be installed on a x64 OS to get this thing up and running. The new installer just takes care of that, and also installs the .NET 4.0 Client Profile, if no .NET 4.0 runtime is found. It's downloaded fresh from the MS servers during installation, and automatically includes the proper language pack for your OS, for as far as we could see.
Now worstje is ironing out the last wrinkles, so we won't have to wait much longer for the official release
