Wait, so you wish you had offered your software under a "99 cent plan"?  :P

I wish it were that simple. :(

If I did that, I'd be bankrupt several times over. It costs more than $1 to get a customer. :(

Interesting. I do like to hear from him.

And yes - that is a question that I wonder about. He seems very genuine and motivated out of real concern for people. So that's one that I just don't understand at all as it all seems to wildly at odds.

He touched on one area that I'd want to ask a related question about. But, that's treading on sensitive toes...

This is pretty bizarre:

'Why fight piracy?' Anodyne dev offers free codes on Pirate Bay
Indie dev posts on torrent search website to raise awareness for Steam Greenlight project

Indie games developer Sean Hogan has offered free copies of Anodyne to those attempting to download the game through a Pirate Bay listings page.

After the 2D top-down adventure was posted on the Pirate Bay, Hogan issued a message within the comments section, asking users to vote for the game on Steam Greenlight if they enjoyed it.

"Hi, I'm one of the two guys who made Anodyne," Sean Wrote.

"It's neat that Anodyne's here and I'm glad that means more people can play it, though of course we'd love it if you bought the game. We're trying to get Greenlit [sic] on Steam so we'd really appreciate it if you and your friends gave us an up-vote".

I wish I had a dollar for every time my software were pirated... I'd buy a new house then another house just because I could. :(

This is a pretty wicked video of Raytheon's Rapid Information Overlay Technology (RIOT) software.

It tracks people through social networking sites (SNS) and gives you a lot of amount of information.

http://www.guardian....-tracks-online-video

In this video obtained by the Guardian, Raytheon's 'principal investigator' Brian Urch explains how the Rapid Information Overlay Technology (Riot) software uses photographs on social networks. These images sometimes contain latitude and longitude details – automatically embedded by smartphones within so-called 'exif header data'. Riot pulls out this information, analysing not only the photographs posted by individuals, but also the location where these images were taken

Nifty, eh? ;)

Just as a bit of follow up...

Having used Synergy for a while now, I'm quite happy with it. It seems much smoother now, and I really can't complain at all.

The only issue that I have had is with changing IP addresses. (I haven't assigned static IPs to every machine - only some.) But that's really my own fault, and not Synergy's.

So, big thumbs up for it.

After that, however, it began thrashing around, although Jaime Murray's 'real' H.G. Wells character went a long way towards saving the third season. (And lets forget about the Eureka crossover/computer game episode which was painfully embarrassing to watch.) Unfortunately, they've also done a lot to make the characters less and less likable as the series continues. Probably in the mistaken hopes it will inject some additional 'depth' into the plots. Or plot as the case may be. Because there really is only one plot: "Snag it. Bag it. Tag it."

In a way I expected this. W13 is basically a one trick pony. It was only a matter of time before the blush started to wear off.

H.G. Wells really did breathe some new life into the show. She reminds me of Claudia Black a lot.

Some shows have a lot of depth, others, not so much.

Some great examples of shows with zero depth are NCSI, CSI, Criminal Minds, and pretty much most cop shows. I almost feel embarrassed for Gary Sinese in CSI:NY - he's a much better actor than the show - it's beneath him - and the character is beneath him. I just can't watch any of them anymore.

Both Eureka and Warehouse 13 have that rigid style that boxes it in. They've done a few good things to break out of the mold, but haven't quite got the knack of it.

For shows with better depth, I think Supernatural really does a fantastic job. Some things I'm not all that keen on, like how Dean just always has a bad attitude - he's a much more likeable character when he's not being moody. But, overall, extremely well done.

I think Felicia Day, Jaime Murray, and Claudia Black all bring that certain je n'est cais pas to the screen that few others do. It's a lively, bright, happy character that you just can't get enough of.

Many other characters are moody, depressing, angry, etc. That gets really annoying after a while, and one of the reason's I really loathe Gary Sinese's character on CSI.

Add Allison Scagliotti of Warehouse 13 to your list. I've seen her in a few interviews. She's great too.

99% of the time I love her character, but later in the series they write stuff into her character and she starts to come out with some douchey crap that makes me hate her or at least disgusts me. It's not a lot, but noticeable.

But I've never seen her in an interview. I'd hope that she's more like her early character than her later character.

I suggested she put hers on and find out.  ;) ;D

@Ren - finally got a chance to sit and watch all six installments of Dragon Age:Thmbsup:

Enjoyed it quite a bit. And Alicia Day's character is flat out adorable. Not surprising in that I've been given to understand (courtesy of friends who do the Comic-Con thing) that Ms. Day is equally endearing in real life.  Apparently she's the girl you'd like to bring home to meet yo' momma...when yo' momma isn't home as the old blues song goes. ;) ;D

It was a fun series, eh? :D

And she's pretty much always like that. I have yet to see her in a role where she isn't simply wonderful. Have you seen the TV show Eureka? She's in that as a peppy genius scientist, and she just nails it. I'm not surprised to hear that she's equally endearing in person. There are a number of (less well known) actors/actresses that I really love to see in different shows, and she's one of them.

BBBBBLLLLLLOOOOOOODDDDD~~~~~!!!!! ;D

I mainly use:

  • Visual Studio
  • MonoDevelop
  • Eclipse

On rare occasions, I strap myself to the rack or step into the iron maiden for the torture of Xcode. It's been a while since, but from what I hear, it's better now than my last water boarding. (But that's not for Java.)

For Eclipse... I hate it. It sucks. It's just a goddamn nightmare to use compared to either VS or MD.

The...

NSFW - No longer capable of maintaining any semblance of civility...
royal ass-fucking begins with the project in Eclipse... You end up with a cluttered cluster-fuck of multiple projects and just complete fucking idiocy. Loading becomes far from trivial. And this is just the simplest of things. Just how fucking hard is it to ONLY LOAD ONE GODDAMN FUCKING PROJECT??? (The workspace thing just pisses me off.)

Sigh... I don't like Eclipse much.

I do like MonoDevelop very much though. While it's not VS, it's still really damn good. You get everything that you'd expect with very few frustrations.

But, I don't use MonoDevelop for Java - that's purely Eclipse for me (and rarely VS for quick edits sometimes).

What I'm curious about is Netbeans. A while back they had some issue where if you installed Netbeans, you basically hosed your system entirely with no hope of recovery. (WRT editing Java, etc.) I'd bet that they've solved that by now though.

I've heard amazing things about IntelliJ, but never used it.

(I don't to a lot of primary productive stuff in Java, though I deal with a lot of Java code.)

I'll be very interested to hear what people have to say on this topic. :D

How much does he pay for media coverage? (Hint - it's not nothing. ;))

But does he seek it out?  And to what end?  Is he still doing something commercial?

Here's a bit on how the BMG Foundation "donates" to media agencies:

Just to give a single example from there - The Brookings Institution. That is the same one that wrote "Which Path to Persia?" in which they outlined how to overthrow/invade Iran:

Is it any wonder that the BMG Foundation needs significant support from the media to create a positive image?

When you start to look behind the scenes, you see that these kinds of organizations are all highly interconnected and networked.

I should give fair warning though... Digging up information on this topic is a bit harder than other topics. It's not well reported on. The doctors that have tried to blow the whistle have been marginalized and ignored.

It's because you downloaded from CNET.  They have a nasty habit of adding crapware and other software for a profit.  Download Avast from the Avast website and stay clear of CNET.

Thing is, Avast directs you to CNET to download...

I haven't had that issue in the past, and I look for secondary downloads at CNET (checking the text to see if it does have anything bundled). Guess they're changing again.

Having said that, I have always been pretty impressed that he never made too much fuss about it. I mean, the donations could have come from Microsoft and then have all MS products branded as 'supporting cancer research' etc. (which would really give them leverage over Ass'le)

We know about his donations mainly just because media likes to talk about him, so I think; God Bless him for it, it may not mean as much as what a normal person does, but he should be rewarded for it rather than just told that it's not enough. Plenty of people give none and are not criticised for it.

I vaguely recall a parable about a poor old woman and a rich merchant. They both donate to something and the resultant praise at the end is for the poor old woman because she gave so much compared to what she had, and that not being much at all. (Maybe someone recalls the parable better, or has a link.)

Luke 21:1-4...

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

There we go! Thanks for that!

I thought it was in the Bible, but also figured I was butchering it enough that I'd better not get the reference wrong as well. :)
