Why I mentioned friendfeed was because it can post to twitter for you.

DC RSS --> Friendfeed --> Twitter

Friendfeed can.

You have to set it up in the friendfeed account options, and selecting which things to post to the twitter account, which in this case would be things from the RSS feed of DC that you would add to the DC friendfeed account, first.

By doing this, you'd have a presence on both friendfeed and twitter

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: New Getting Organized Experiment?
« Last post by app103 on February 14, 2009, 04:06 PM »
Mouser, did you actually try any of these systems? Or did you just go shopping for tools from within them, skipping over the bulk of what they contained?

I think what I did was take apart something that wasn't broken and tried to fix it, because I didn't realize it wasn't broken. And we all know what happens when you do that.

And what I was trying to fix was something the "experts" swear should never have worked in the first place.

I can't remember which comedian it was that told the story about a kid that was capable of the impossible and could ride his bicycle on the edge of a fence, because he hadn't learned about gravity yet. As soon as someone told the kid why it was impossible for him to do that and taught him what gravity was, the kid could no longer ride his bicycle on the edge of the fence.

That's kind of what happened to me.

as many people here know (as it's been made fun of plenty of times) i have taken away some ideas from these systems and formulated by own system of index cards which i have found extremely useful.

Technically, you came up with that yourself, on day 1, before we officially got started. I think you just instinctively knew that would work for you, while you were out shopping. I think you could have quit at that point and not been any less productive than when the whole GOE was over. So without having to go through any of this again, you can come up with something else that works for yourself, just like before,

Like I said...you already know how to do it. You don't need anyone else to tell you.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: New Getting Organized Experiment?
« Last post by app103 on February 14, 2009, 12:29 PM »
I have learned something from experience, and the process of learning it has come at a very heavy price...

I once thought I wasn't all that productive and that I could benefit from a productivity system of some sort, and agreed to participate in the first GOE here on the forum.

Each & every system presented, left me with a confused look on my face, as they weren't geared towards how I live my life. I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing. For example, GTD has some @phone crap that doesn't apply to people like me that avoid phones and maybe makes 2 calls a year! And they all either make a distinction between work life & home life, or are only geared towards one of them, ignoring the other. And I don't make that distinction or seperation in my life. Or they assume that the area you need to be more productive in, is in a corporate office setting. Or they assume you have disposable income to blow on "productivity crap", which they insist that you can't be productive without. (none of these systems recycle envelopes from junk mail for your todo lists, or use empty ramen cases for your inbox)

And then they wanted me to over-think things, over-plan things, and think about things I didn't want to think about. Why do I have to plan where I want my career to be 10 years from now in order to get the dishes done today? Why do I need to have well defined long term goals, and have them written down? Is this so I can be disappointed in myself if my life takes a change in direction or doesn't go as planned?

None of the productivity gurus believe in "organized chaos".

The end result was that these systems destroyed my productivity and left me feeling very seriously depressed about my life. I was lucky to have survived. I felt worthless. I was borderline suicidal.

I haven't been able to fully recover from it.

But this is what I learned:

I already was quite productive before all of this and I didn't need any help being that way. I had my own productivity system that was perfect for me, and it worked better than anything anybody else has ever come up with, written about, blogged about, or talked about. This system was a part of who I was and something I did on pure instinct. And it was frugal (just like me) and cost me $0 in the way of supplies, tools, books, and software.

Now if I could only figure out how I used to do it, I could return to my highly productive life that I used to have, regain my self-esteem, my purpose, and be a much happier person.

I thought about taking notes related to my journey back to my former self, with the intention of writing my own book on how to be productive (and happy), but then it dawned on me...

If I did, the system wouldn't work for anyone else but me, and it's quite likely that I would screw up other people as badly as other people's productivity systems screwed me up.

I know I am not alone. I know there has to be other people that were destroyed by all the productivity crap, like I was.

Here is my best advice:

Stay away from other people's productivity systems that were designed to work for them, how they think, and how they live their lives. Stay away from productivity systems designed to line the pockets of their creators...writers that create a new system when they start running low on cash. Stay away from productivity systems designed to increase traffic and sell ad space on blogs that publish the system. Stay away from productivity systems that come with magical mops. (nudone's "works for 2 months system" is nothing but magical mops)

Just don't do it....

Just do it.

Look into yourself and draw from that, the system you already know from instinct. Following anyone else's system will destroy that part of you that already knows how to be productive. It will take away your instinct. You already know what you have to do. You already know how to do it. You know where your strengths & weaknesses are. You know how to fix it. You don't need anyone else to tell you.

« Last post by app103 on February 13, 2009, 02:49 PM »
There aren't any of these up yet because i need some help building them.  What i need for each such badge is:
  • 16x16 tiny gif image
  • 64x64 bigger image (jpg or gif)
  • url for more info
  • one word label, one line title, and then a longer description

There is quite a few people that deserve to have this one, but one in particular should get it first, since he inspired me to create it.

16x16: clown16.jpg
64x64: clown64.jpg
url: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clown
one word label: clown
one line title: official forum clown

longer description: Life is a circus and we are standing in their ring. Given in honor of their intelligent wit, side splitting humor, and acts of insane hilarity. Being this funny should be a crime, and we'd probably have them arrested if we weren't laughing so hard.

Special large size:

I created this as a PSP7 vector, should there ever come an occasion where it needs to be made much, much larger. (think t-shirts, mugs, posters, 5000 ft billboards)

Using XP.  I like this, but when I use StartKey/D shortcut combo to get to the desktop in a hurry, the Stopwatch is closed.  Has this been brought up before?  Any update?

Best regards

I have XP, and I just tried what you said. It doesn't close. Check your tray. It's still there and still running. Just right click and select Show Window.

The key combo you are using affects all windows and not just the stop watch. It acts the same way as minimizing everything would, which is why the stopwatch gets sent to the tray.

a follow on question would be[/u]:
if I organise / correct the tags first is there a renamer (preferably free/donation-ware) that could rename using the tags info ?

Yup: mp3tag  :D

Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit metadata (ID3, Vorbis Comments and APE) of common audio formats. It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words from tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists and more. The program supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for select files or CDs.

General Software Discussion / Re: File Names : what should be avoided
« Last post by app103 on February 13, 2009, 11:15 AM »
I am really surprised that nobody has mentioned what kind of trouble having a '#' anywhere in a path or file name can cause with some file types.

Try naming a .chm format ebook with '#' in the title (or folder name) and then opening it. (this was a big mistake I once made)

Not sure what may happen on other OS's, but in Windows, you won't be able to read it.

If a '#' appears in the file name, the table of contents list will show but the pages will all be blank or say "page cannot be displayed'.

If a '#' appears in a folder name, you will get an access violation when trying to open it.

You also should never include a '#' in the name of any file or folder you plan on uploading to a webserver.

The reason (and cause of the .chm problem, too) is that '#' is used in html (and related URL's) as anchors to a specific part of a page.

Here is another idea in line with microdonations, but not quite what others have often thought of it as being like: http://www.editorand...ontent_id=1003940234

This one could actually work.

Don't feel bad. I didn't notice that button either, till after I made the post explaining how to edit the url.

I took a screenshot and edited my post to include it.  :-[
3539
don't know if this is even possible, but this really irritates me

is it possible to provide the functionality to print or save/export a thread in it's entirety.

I occasionally want to print a thread so i can review it offline or use it as a reference, and I really hate having to print out 3, 5, 10, 20 or more pages individually

Just modify the url a little by adding &action=printpage to the thread's main URL.

For example, the url for this thread, all one one page, would be this:

https://www.donation...amp;action=printpage

Or just click that little button at the botom of every page in a thread that says "print"

Well, there's still some quirks that I see in a VM that I can't seem to iron out.  Specifically, the tray icon.

What's wrong with the tray icon? Looks ok to me:

Check your grocery receipts -- amazing how many times you find mistakes and/or realize you just paid $16 for 4 decidely non-exceptional organic tomatoes.  >:(

I always check my receipts, hoping that I do find a mistake. The supermarket that I shop in will give you one of that item for free if they make a mistake. (but you have to catch it)

I figured I could post my whole collection to this thread, one image at a time (that's a lot of pics!) or I could post them all in one shot with a link, and let you guys pick out and share the ones you like best.

After my original post, I uploaded a bunch more, bringing the total to just under 2000 random pics. (like I said, this should keep you busy for awhile)

This should keep you busy for awhile. It's pretty much my entire collection, except for ones recently collected and not uploaded yet.

Just keep clicking the images or refreshing the page to see a new random one.

It's not possible to link to individual images, so if you find one that you like and want to share, you'll have to save it and upload it.

I have an older PocketPC that it's a bit tough to find stuff for. (freeware that is actually useful to me)

HP Jornada 540 (SH3, CE 3.0 (PPC-2000))

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else owns one of these and has been able to figure out how to get it to sync with Vista (or Win7)

I am on XP now, but I have a feeling that if I upgrade, my Jornada is as good as trash.  :(

I was just thinking of another application that might be more visual and keep you out of the trees. It could be just the style that would work best for you.

GoalEnforcer (link to my mini review)

Please see their website for additional info, as my review is a little outdated. More features were added and they now have 3 versions (starter/standard/hyperfocus) My review is for the standard version.

They do have a GTD template included with it, but you can also make your own if it's not quite what you had in mind.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why Computers Can't Kill Post-Its - MIT research
« Last post by app103 on February 09, 2009, 02:43 AM »
One very big mistake that the writer made repeatedly, is in calling all sticky notes, "Post-its".

This mistake is equal to calling all search engines, Google...or all operating systems Windows. As a professional writer for a magazine, he should know better.

Post-it is a trademarked brand name of sticky notes, belonging to the 3M corporation. You can call all Post-its, sticky notes, but you can't call all sticky notes, Post-its.

There is only one Post-it Notes in the physical world, and only one in the software world. Both are products of 3M.

And yes, the article did seem as if it was an advertisement for list.it.

And I really don't understand how any kind of digital notes that relies on you having to have a browser open, and Firefox 3 in particular, is supposed to be "started with absolute minimal effort". A simple notes.txt file on your desktop sounds easier & less effort.

My 3M Post-it digital notes are right in my tray, one click and I have one popped up right in front of me to begin typing. Application loads at startup and I don't have to think about it...just use it. And I can use it offline, with my browser closed. This is true with most digital sticky notes applications.

Even Yahoo Notepad is more convenient through their desktop widget, and it has auto-save that stores your notes online in your Yahoo account, accessible from any PC with an internet connection, even if you don't have access to the widget itself (use any browser you want, not locked to FF3).

And more important, you won't have a bunch of students spying on the content of your notes, which to me is both a privacy & security concern with list.it. The whole purpose behind the creation of list.it is for them to gain access to the content of a large quantity of people's notes. It was made specifically to spy on its users. The content of your notes may even be made public* (without your name connected to it, but public, nonetheless) The fact they tell you that they will be spying on you, and that they give you an option to opt out doesn't make it any less spying.

*a pdf file of a published paper was found, containing text gathered from the actual notes from users of list.it. Since the project is still open, there is the likelihood of an even longer paper containing even more examples of real note content.

Living Room / P22 Music Text Composition Generator ( A free online music utility)
« Last post by app103 on February 08, 2009, 11:13 AM »
P22 Music Text Composition Generator is an unusual tool that can turn your text into music.

Just enter your text in the box, name the file, choose the BPM, and select your instrument.

After clicking the bar, your text will be rendered as a midi file to download, as well as matching sheet music that you can print out.

For a demonstration, I entered in the text from DonationCoder's About Us page.

In "Bird Tweet" at 500 BPM, it sounds like this: * AboutUs.mid (45.25 kB - downloaded 389 times.)
