Living Room / Re: Can anyone help? Windows 7 permissions
« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 13, 2011, 02:56 PM »
If you go to the properties of the System32 folder and go under the security tab you can select users and temporarily grant FULL control which will get you around the "access denied" error. That should let you replace folders at will.

If it's configured the way I think it is (and she's already using an admin acct) that will still stop it cold. Kinda like the Windows update folders that get left on the root of C: that are a PITA to delete.

Simplest would be just to configure permissions as needed to get the job done, and then apply the setup security template to put things back to "normal".

FWIW,

A friend of mine with a commercial site bought all the names - .org, .net, .list, etc. - and put in permanent 301 redirects to his primary .com domain.  That addressed the domain issue, and he did see an increase in traffic.  Then he bought several other domains - mostly typo names - put up pages and linked to his primary, one-way links.  He lost ranking  :( when he did that.  (He didn't get the JC Penney lesson  ;D.)  He dropped those linkages and got most of his ranking back, but dropped to 2nd page in the SERPs.

That's not actually too far from what I'm after. Not exact but similar.

SEO of a legitimate nature - content, good keywords, and the like - is fine.  But trying to game the system, artificially inflate position, can get awfully dicey.  Don't mean to imply that is your intent, but it's worth thinkin' 'bout how an honest effort might be misconstrued.

This is the part that drives my Ape Shit. The "game" has gotten so convoluted you damn near need an attorney to explain it. Apparently some of this with Pointer Sites was the idea of a SEO guy the brass was talking to ... And then I run across this:
http://www.realwebre...r-sites-problems/22/

Prolly half the IM lists I'm on try to sell something that they swear will get you on 1st page - but none of 'em have much to say 'bout how long you'll stay there  :P. - and a lot of the SEO sellers/resellers do much the same.  My biggest giggle is to get a proposal from some SEO outfit that isn't even on the first three (3) pages of the SERPs  :o.  Kinda puts their offer(s) in perspective, donchano  :-\.

YMMV, but the JC Penney example might be something to mention for management consideration.

The prices the SEO types kick around is what I find staggering; $750 a month? ...WTF am I buying...a Yacht?!?

...

Any chance you could elaborate on that a bit?

I deleted my opinion because I believe SEO, as you plan to do it, is 'cheating'. I believe you should not try such tactics. If you want your site to be found, then build a site that attracts people. Search engine manipulation is a big problem for everyone.

Understood, and also part of why I said in the OP that (This was the Brass's idea) I was on-the-fence. ;)

It's really more of a case of trying to fix what our current domain name is doing to itself in the search ranking. We can't drop it because we've been using it for almost 20 years ... but it isn't helping in that it doesn't even vaguely imply what we're doing now. So I'm looking at (trying to keep it reasonable) adding 3 or 4 additional names that clarify/support our current direction. So we're attracting the right people, instead of confused people that wanted something entirely different.

Is it dancing on the edge of being the right way to do something wrong ... Yeah I'll give you that. But there is only so many times you can so say no to one of managements pet ideas before things start to get "complicated"... :)

If you have a case where people would be typing/searching all the words of the url (I don't think the order matters much if the words are 'whole' words) then google will almost certainly show it early if not first.
1 out of 3 words, 1 out of 2, 2 out of 3, etc. will revert back to the content side of things and registering the variations will not have much effect. Again unless 1 or more words are recognized organizations and the like.

Perfect! That tracks with what I was thinking initially. The company is refocusing a bit to change with the times and putting up a new site (because our old one sucks) ... And there are a few key areas that we want to focus on that are becoming (trendy) popular searches.

I may need to take a crash course in SEO here shortly... (Zoiks!)

The iDied is surgically implanted and remains dormant until you keel over. Then it automatically activates the iAfterLife and you're transported to an apple wonderland paradise.

The trick of course is you have to keel over before the battery does...

if someone is searching for rg, unless rg is some obvious trademark and not a regular word (like let's say if cnn-dot.com existed and someone searched cnn)

That's more where I'm coming from. Say somebody was searching for Duck Paper Blue, a  domain named BlueDuckPaper.com should (and seems to from tests I've run) rank highly in the search results as long as it doesn't have any other detractors (like no related content).

Hm... Okay, that jives with what I was thinking for the other stuff, and it's being taken care of. This was more regarding having multiple domain names pointing at the same site. The assumption being if the key word queried is part of the domain name (and validated by content) it will rank (that site) higher is the search results.

Does that tactic still work in practice? ...Or am I completely off my nut??

So the brass wants to grab some more domain names to try to increase the chances of our site coming up in various searches. I'm on the fence... I know this was a popular tactic once ... But does it still work?

I'm thinking going for 5-6 content relevant names might be worth it. But saturation bombing with a laundry list would just be bad/foolish/backfire, or just waste money.

Thoughts?

That just opens a "market" for pirate DNS servers. Crank down too far and they'll start getting hit just as hard as FTP servers did 5+ years ago.

Where there's a will, there's a way ... and an attack vector. :)

HP doesn't even develop drivers anymore (quote form an HP rep) they just let the Uni-Monster auto-configure itself to whatever is needed for the latest devices (a bit scary me thinks).

That really does account for a lot of issues you see with HP ATCW (Almost Totally CrapWare) drivers. It also accounts for why almost any model in their range seems to suffer from the same software issues.

Neat huh? Like the insistence on enabling Mopier Mode (and sometimes HDD) by default on laser printers which causes multiple copy prints to fail. I just love that one.

But I've seen other companies do even worse with their network service implementations (send to Email/Network Folder/etc.), so it's real tricky to pick a favorite.

Hm... I'm running an E6600, which a Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz. I timed it for this run and best I can do with a one finger click is about 5 clicks per second (I stopped on page 362). The display kept right up with the cadence and highest CPU usage was 60%, lowest was 3% and (approx) average was in the high teens.

It did hiccup about 3 times and take a full second to load a frame ... But 3 out of 300+, I'm ok with.

Also, some of the universal printer drivers try to be an all in one single driver that handles all print devices by manufacturer X ... Which could be why the Canon(s) grouped-up on you.
Interesting. Tomos has the same grouping with his Canon but I've seen that others with other makes have the same phenomenon; dk if those are using the type of 'universal brand' driver to which you refer.
-cranioscopical (October 11, 2011, 01:54 PM)

Many are, thing to remember is while there is many brands...They are all using the Same few technologies for lobing the job to the printer. So most of the bad habits get shared as well. HP doesn't even develop drivers anymore (quote form an HP rep) they just let the Uni-Monster auto-configure itself to whatever is needed for the latest devices (a bit scary me thinks).

The grouping doesn't bother me at all. I simply want to pick a 'printer', from any drop-down, that will behave as I want with no intervening steps.
-cranioscopical (October 11, 2011, 01:54 PM)

If you ever do an update or clean install  for the main HP Universal Driver Package it will try to default to the single instance (all printers through me) configuration. I've never selected it (because it sounds a bit sketchy), but I may need to one of these days just to see what actually happens.

I frequently use the multiple print driver instance configuration as a safety net for check printers or specialty form to keep users from screwing up either their books (not all accounting software reprints checks smoothly), or wasting pricy numbered documents (like narcotics perscriptions) ... So I well understand the need for the config you were after.
3541
After some fiddling, I made a copy of a printer under W7. Then I set one copy to params a and the other to params b. Both 'printers' appear but one is on a sub-menu of the printer icon (see image).
-cranioscopical (October 10, 2011, 10:50 PM)

Just out of curiosity, did you reboot after making the copy?? Some of these newer drivers (I've seen HP & Brother do it) like to get cute from time to time and through shadows of either themselves, or a part of themselves that looks like a partially borked install. This strange and annoying phenomenon usually sorts itself out after a reboot forces the what's what issue. (Hint: I'm pondering the cause of the unspecified Raw Port entry in the SS).

Also, some of the universal printer drivers try to be an all in one single driver that handles all print devices by manufacturer X ... Which could be why the Canon(s) grouped-up on you.

In IE9 it's consistently sluggish all the way through, but the rendering is messed up. WebApps, gotta love 'em.
Strange, I tried just steadily clicking (in IE9) and it bounced right along right up to slide 120 (where I stopped) in maybe 20-30 seconds tops. Wasn't really paying much attention to the rendering at that speed, but it seemed to be all there. *Shrug*

« Last post by Stoic Joker on October 10, 2011, 09:20 AM »
Monitor, Track, and Document ALL Folder and file moves across all HDD's.

Should have a powerful search option, should also have a folder content listing, so you can see what files where in said folders.

This should track EVERY MOVEMENT of EVERY FILE AND FOLDER

When I put these three together I see some serious security implications regarding data leakage. File names might not seem important, but much can be gleened from them especially when (long names allow...) users are a bit too specific.

There ya go. Six items of gobbledygook that cover just about everything a 20 page EULA does. And with 90% of what most of them boil down to covered by Item #1 alone. How's that for data compression?

Excellent. ...And also the very basis of my 25 word rule. That being: Anything that cannot be explained in 25 (plain English) words or less, is an obvious attempt at subterfuge ... And therefore exempts me bothering with it, or abiding by it.

85% of the people have a given perception of what fair and reasonable usage is, and that is what I follow. Anything beyond that is just silly...And therefore ignored.

Anything installed on my computer is considered a guest on my digital "home". Hence it is required to play nice or suffer the consequences of getting disemboweled with variate of utilities I keep handy for resolving software behavior problems.

Last time I wen't looking at/for N devices I got the distinct impression that they really just weren't ready for prime-time yet. Every device I looked at top-shelf to bottom had user complaints of ill behavior (Signal drops, system hangs, self bricking, etc.). And really if the device(s) you're connecting to it with are not also N then they're totally pointless.

If you're covering both floors with a single device (couldn't tell by the discription) changes are you'd get a better performance-to-headach ratio if you just went with 4 G devices (2 per floor) and configured them for raoming. That way there would always be a short path the hardwire from anywhere in the building.

Users aren't supposed to be installing software (it's dangerous). But if a program needs to be available to all users, and it wants to store writable files in its very own close by place ... That (IIRC) is what C:\ProgramData is for.

Binaries in Program Files
Writables in ProgramData
User X specific/only in AppData
