is jl asking for something more than showdialogs is supposed to do?

showdialogs shows the FILE PROPERTIES dialog for me - but i don't think its meant to show other options dialog for Firefox, SecureCrt, etc.

maybe skrommel can add these as well, but i don't think this is a bug is it?

LOGO CONTEST

It's time for DonationCoder.com to have a new unique, memorable LOGO.
It has to be a design that looks good very small (say 128x128 pixels) but also looks good large (like on a tshirt).

You can post submissions as replies to this thread or email them directly to [email protected].

There is no limit to the number of submissions and no fixed expiration date for the contest.
We might choose multiple logos if there are several that look good together.

The winner will get some prize(s), fame, fortune, plus the thanks and gratefullness of this site.

ProcessTamer / Re: Config always says Tray prog isn't running.
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 07:09 AM »
process tamer does not require any specific background processes to be running.

the configuration tool and the tray tool are separate processes in order to maximize efficiency (i.e. the tray utility is tiny and includes no configuration user interface).

there seem to be some people for whom the configuration tool does not properly locate the running tray process.. i'm not entirely sure why.  i'm assuming that you haven't renamed either of them.

if the configuration tool doesnt detect process tamer, the consequence will be that the tray utility won't be informed of changes to configurations.

to test if it is working run the cpueater test (there is a shortcut to it in the process tamer start menu group).

after a few seconds of it running process tamer should tame it.  if not, something is definitely not working.

let me know your results.  it should still tame it (tray icon should change a little and a balloon should pop up if configured to) even though the configuration tool doesnt see it.

if this behavior of the configuration tool persists (ie it never thinks the program is running) let me know and i will make a debug version that we can use to help find out what's going wrong.

Living Room / Re: Product names — how do you come up with one?
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 06:57 AM »
lol regarding clipboard help+spell, so true.

and i agree 90% with skrommel comment, he is a master at naming.  however he does violate my #1 rule - some of his names are used by other applications and would be extremely hard to locate if you try to do a google search for them (ie ProcessGuard).

yep, sounds like gdi or memory leak.
you need to install a program that reports memory/gdi use.
TaskInfo is the one i use but some other free ones have been reported on this forum.
probably too late to fix it until next reboot.
or you could try exiting programs until you get some memory back.

Find And Run Robot / option to remove status bar?
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 03:50 AM »
BTW: Could we get rid of the status bar on the main FARR window. In the preferences window it makes perfectly sense to have a status bar that shows informations about the different options, but in the main window I don't need a statusbar that tells me "Wellcome master" or informs me that I can right-click an entry. I think getting rid of the status bar would make FARR look better.

i think i can add an option for that.
ps. in the future can people post such requests on their own threads; easier to track and not lose track of.

Official Announcements / URL Snooper Update (v2.04.04)
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 02:49 AM »
Some users with certain network adapters (especially Intel ethernet network cards) were not able to use URL Snooper because it was not able to sniff network traffic.

The new version changes the way promiscuous mode is disabled and will now work with those network cards.  If you have such a problem, make sure that you check "only sniff packets for this computer" in the configuration dialog.

See more information in this thread:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=905.0

Download on our releases page as usual:
https://www.donation...ftware/releases.html

Full change log is available to view in online help file on url snooper page:

[thanks to digger69 for help tracking down and fixing this problem].

General Software Discussion / In Praise of Microsoft Frontpage??
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 02:36 AM »
Recently the developer of a software component gave me a free license to use a component in return for doing some proofreading and translation checking of his website.

He sent me a large number of web pages and i had to go through them all and edit a lot of text.

Now, what tool to use...

the problems were twofold:

1) in order to facilitate comparing old and new versions, what was desired was an editor that would not reformat the html, adding, deleteing, or re-arranging elements.
2) i tried using a plaintext editor (rather than a visual html editor which shows the page as designed), which would have solved #1, but it was just far too hard to proofread and correct so much text on so many pages in this way.

i tried several visual html editor, and the best one i found for this task was, believe it or not, Microsoft Frontpage, which basically left the files exactly in their original form except for the edits i made.  the only thing i had to change was set the line length to 9999 or else it tried to break long lines after i edited them.

so, for this kind of task at least, MS Frontpage wins real kudos from me !!!
(ps. i'm as suprised as you are).

another mistake i make a lot as zaine is quick to remind me :)
is that i sometimes leave out the spaces and sometime put them in
ie "ScreenshotCaptor" vs. "Screenshot Captor"

pick one and stick with it!

i also want to point out that naming an app can be very fun and motivating - it breathes some life into a project idea and can really motivate you.

Living Room / Re: Product names — how do you come up with one?
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 12:46 AM »
great question!

i have come up with some real losers and some i hope winners :)

i try to have 2 rules:
1) do a google search and it shouldnt return more than 1 or 2 hits
2) name should reflect function of the app.

mistakes i have made in the past:
1) don't use a name that could be spelled different ways and with punctuation:
e.g. "find and run robot" vs "find+run robot" vs. "find&run robot" = bad bad bad

« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2005, 12:03 AM »
i havent fully fixed the sizing bug it was just a test to see if i understand the problem..
but at least i know what the cause is.. its a damn bug with automatic sizing of columns.
the fix will make the window shimmer a bit so its not a good final solution.

can you try this version and see if the sizing problem is still fixed in this version:
