General Software Discussion / Supercharged Alt-tab replacement utility
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 01:35 AM »
TaskSwitchXP is an advanced task management utility that picks up where the standard Windows Alt+Tab switcher leaves off. It provides the same functionality, and adds visual styles to the dialog and also enhances it by displaying thumbnail preview of the application that will be switched to. TaskSwitchXP also has a powerful process and window management capability that allows you quickly to close/minimize applications and their groups. The unique capabilities of TaskSwitchXP make it useful for tracking down multitudinous windows, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

Official Announcements / New links at top of forum page
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 01:30 AM »
You'll see some new links at the top of each forum page now, in your "User Info" box:

Show unread posts (since last visit).  Show recent posts.  Show new replies to your posts.

Just to give you some more ways of finding the stuff you want.
Most of the time what you'll probably want to click is the "Show unread posts" link (or see button on button bar below), or "Show recent posts" link which shows the last 50 posts to the forum.

Hope the new options are useful.

I've changed the names and order of those sections.
opinions?
35079
no need to discuss, it's too obviously a good idea.

however, one thing that might be worth discussing is, do the following sections need name changes:
"Software in the Wild"
"Mini-Reviews by Members"

?

Best Archive Tool / Re: More Archive Reviews?
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 01:10 AM »
the choice of what programs get mentioned and reviewed at pc magazine often seems arbitrary to me; they frequently seem to ignore important apps and mention inferior ones.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: I love the Bulk Rename Utility!
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 01:08 AM »
wonderful, you've convinced me to try it!

my experience with renamers is that it pays to have several, and then use the one that makes it easiest to do the current job you have in mind.  sometimes one renamer makes it easier than another for a given task.

i like this idea a lot.. i'm going to think about it a little
it's a bit like the app on this site called "the form letter machine" but with fields and stuff.

stefan i don't understand what you are showing us.. a way to do this already in pspad?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Quality of screenshots?!
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2005, 05:27 PM »
first, THANK YOU for the recommendation and kind words  :)

i actually DID make a change to the program if you were using the "save copy as" function to save jpg files; it now defaults to the compression level set in options but allows you to override it.  the older version may have defaulted to a higher compression rate.

i'm glad to hear that the problem seems to be gone.  as mentioned earlier, png is a favorite for screenshots just because it does so much better at compressing them without introducing noise (jpg is great for photographs).

do you know your network adapter?
a search for winpcap and the network adapter name might yield some clues.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Issues with ESC; trying to leave the joint fast…
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2005, 05:01 PM »
let me try to fix sound, the beep is not by me but by the system itself.

as far as having to hit escape twice
this is on purpose.

you can close it with one key by hitting the hotkey again (break or whatever).

escape always cancels search (if running) and selects text.
the selecting of text is very useful i find for running new searches.

ie run a search on zzzzz
then hit escape
and start typing new search.

there needs to be a way to quickly reselect current text and then type over it (replace it).
escape seems well suited for this, especially given that the hotkey is the quick close key already.

i still think a jpg with minimal compression should probably be perfect (although big);
i checked and minimal compression setting is being done properly, but there are some other settings for things like smoothing that could cause maybe some differences.  if you feel like emailing me the jpgs made by hardcopy vs. screenshot captor plus instructs on how to see the difference, i might be able to experiment more.

WOOT!!!

yes, they are being loaded twice the first time, i'm going to try to remove that now that we know this works.

the source of the trouble again was that damn shell browser component that shows thumbnails.. i really have to replace that soon, its the source of so much trouble...

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature - Folder Search
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2005, 03:51 PM »
adding file extensions to search modifications is easy because you can associate keywords with not only folders but scoring patterns.
as far as assigning x to y or y to x, i definitely hear what you are saying, i just have to figure out whats cleanest..

ah that probably explains the few reports of trouble with win2k and transparency when using skins with F&R

stealth skin is a bit too strange for me,
