General Software Discussion / Re: "Program Checker" useful new tool
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 11:05 PM »
seems like a fantastic idea to me.

note there are similar looking programs which checksum files on your computer and report when one has changed, which can also be very useful for security purposes.

but this program is doing something different - its maintaining a centralized list of official known trustworthy versions of programs, and checking yours against its centralized list, which might be a little troublesome privacy-wise, but seems good from a security standpoint.

[free for personal use].

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: A-book
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 11:01 PM »
awesome review - the export and import features sound nice, the extra charge for synchronizing not so nice..
i think address books fall into that category of apps where there are probably quite a few good ones that not many people know about - would love to hear more people chime in on what they use for this.  me myself i don't have enuogh people i talk to make use of one

as for the memory use, i personally wouldn't worry so much about it, life's more enjoyable when you dont :)

Official Announcements / Re: Website went down for about 6 hours or so
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 10:46 PM »
yes, i usually try to pre-announce preplanned downtimes, i apologize for that, i simply forgot this one was planned (it was done by the hosting company not me), and it was supposed to be only a few minutes.  hahah i know, i'm learning that's often just wishfull thinking :)

maybe we should set up like a separate alternate place where if the site goes down people can go for more info and discussion; like an offsite blogger.com page or something.  seems like a good idea. i'll set it up.

also people, if you ever find the site down you can join us for chat on our irc channel, which i am on most of the time.  more info here:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=772.0

(irc visitors even found out about a secret unreleased donationcoder.com app on the irc channel the other day, so that's more incentive for you :))

« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 10:41 PM »
definitely an interesting idea.. i know a little about wikis but not as much as i should - let me read up a little more and try to think how we might use it.  as you say it's probably best suited for storing the latest up-to-date information of some sort.. using it to replace the file file is a very interesting idea in general..

the freeware author of the 1-4a software seems like a great guy.  the 1-4a rename page is fun and lighthearted.  check out the "negative comments" page linked at bottom ;)

Screenshot Captor / Re: "Capture an object" behaviour
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 10:11 PM »
ok thanks stefan.
looks like capturing menus is problematic (and always was) and something to put on todo list.
i'll look into why the shell browser component isnt sorting properly.

Unicode Image Maker / Re: Unicode Text-to-Image v1.00.01

[old download link removed]

p.s.
i would *love* to hear from anyone who thinks this program will actually be useful to them for some task about how they might use it and what features might be added to make it more useful, though i realize those most likely to find it useful are probably not native english speakers.

Unicode Image Maker / Re: Unicode Text-to-Image v1.00.01

Key features:
Embeds the formatted richtext inside images (jpg, tiff, png) so that you can simply reopen (drag+drop supported) the image to recover and edit the original formatted text.
Saves images with transparent backgrounds -- ideal for overlaying text images on other images.
35064
I'm just about done with this; it will come as both a new feature in Screenshot Captor and also a standalone tool that i think might be useful for other purposes.

Unicode Image Maker / OUT OF DATE OLD VERSION -> Unicode Text-to-Image v1.00.01
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 02:24 PM »
Unicode Text-to-Image is a program to let you create images from text, especially Unicode or Nonstandard Font Text. It is useful for adding unicode text as images in graphics applications that cannot directly support Unicode.

I will make a download available for beta testing in next couple of days.
This tool is also being integrated into Screenshot Captor in order to support Unicode text boxes.

« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 01:00 PM »
there are actually a variety of tools to do this even if your internet browser is not broken
.. and its quite useful especially for visiting urls that aren't actually links.

i'll try to think of some names in a minute if no one else posts links.

I can't click links - something broke in my Windows months ago...

whats very sad..
did you try installing different browsers, like firefox, that might be able to recreate the proper links?

Official Announcements / Website went down for about 6 hours or so

Sunday Morning Downtime:

The hosting company had scheduled maintenance that was supposed to take less than 30 minutes.
It ended up taking 6 or 7 hours.  Seems back up now though i'm not 100% convinced it won't go down again as they complete the process.

can't do anything about space+alt, its built into windows.

i suppose i could always add an option that says escape always exits, if people really want this..

-

but if i do ill add it to a tab labeled "crazy options" so they don't distract people  ;)

for those who tend to avoid visiting sites with activex movies and stuff,
what this page is, is a desktop screen movie showing an incredibly amazing piece of music created using a multiple copies of windows sound player and simple sounds being combines.

It's one of those things that blows your mind and makes you realize this world has some truely amazing people in it.
very very cool.

ProcessTamer / Re: feature request: kill process if...
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2005, 04:03 AM »
as you've surmised, i'm working my way through the programs, doing major upgrades to each.

Screenshot Captor and Find+Run Robot have gotten most of the attention in last month (F&R users waited a long time for some of these updates!!).

F&R still has a little more work needed, and Screenshot Captor is just about done with this round of work.

Process Tamer is next in the queue to get a bunch of new features.. im carefully thinking about all the requests, and the best and most efficient way to handle it.

Process Tamer is actually the most popular program on the site (!) and it's long overdue for major impovements, which it is going to get, have no doubt, i'm just working my way up to it.  Expect major enhancements (but not at the cost of less efficiency!), so keep the suggestions coming.

My current thinking is to allow a custom set of instructions to perform on files, which would allow the kind of thing you are talking about, im just still chewing over the best way to do it and how it can be organized so that it keeps its super minimal impact on cpu performance, and it still super easy to configure for most people.

Keep the ideas coming - i'll soon begin work on PT.

note that the "Show unread posts" does the same thing as the "UNREAD POSTS" button that we've had available for a few months (what's new is the big list of Recent Posts, and the fact that these links are now in the Info Box where its now much easier to decide what you want to see).
