Timns Apps / Re: Auspex

... despite the mention of "bugs"  :-[
I did get my Redmine account today, and plan to write up some of the issues I see with Auspex later, but yes, there are some... :o

Developer's Corner / Re: Just How Many Programs Have You Written and Never Released?
« Last post by Ath on January 13, 2011, 02:19 PM »
Well, after being in this business for over 25 years, I've got my share of good apps, crap apps, abandoned stuff, trials, and the likes.
At first it always is hard to get going on a new idea (or even have a new idea ), but if it starts being a working 'thing', it's getting more and more satisfying. It's also harder and harder to focus my mind on the daily job, and not be distracted with 'that idea in the back of my mind that needs some fix or improvement...' ;)
And when it finally is doing what it should do and it's (fairly) presentable, and the momentum or the original motivation of writing that thingy isn't gone, then eventually it will be presented to the audience... if any.

Guess that, like most of us experienced, about 10 percent of what turns into a project of some kind is actually released or used, and the rest is just what it has always been: collateral damage (mostly because of the diskspace it takes)
But then, most likely, there are some gems, hidden in the debris :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Word Processor OS
« Last post by Ath on January 10, 2011, 04:56 PM »
Are you sure you need a computer-like device for that? A simple paper notebook (yup, the kind that you can tear pages off of) and a pencil would do, I guess?

If it has to be something electronic, the Chrome OS on it's special laptop, by Google could fit in nicely, but you'd have to make Docs your startup-page then 8)

7-zip is a free download for Windows and Linux (but JottiQ still isn't going to work on Linux with Mono because of the WPF requirement)

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is it so difficult to hide the Title Bar?
« Last post by Ath on January 09, 2011, 02:38 PM »
Ath, both Photoshop and Chrome have the same elegant solution for most of the problems you mention...

I'm afraid that's a matter of taste, and that's not mine ;)

The discussion on the lack of pixels in height of monitors is a whole different one, and would have been easily solved if you had gotten the U2711 model :-* (2560x1440 with 0,233 mm pixels)
I bought an Iiyama E2607WS with 1920x1200 resolution a year ago, and it works for me, but I'm still searching for a monitor with at least a 3840x2160 resolution (16:9) and 0,30 mm pixel size (without seams, else 4 panels of 1920*1080 would do) :o

And you would want to close, minimize or maximize all apps from their auto-hiding menu's (press Alt to bring that into view) or from their Taskbar icon (W7 assumed, without taskbar labels enabled) ??
How are you going to drag that window around your desktop if it doesn't have a 'handle' to drag it by?
3507
Could you give a suggestion for the grid you'd like on that setup?
Most grids are relatively sized, so should all work just fine on any size monitor, just pick a layout that fits your preference.

I've used this key/profile decription in the past to enable num-lock on the logon screen, so it could be worth a shot to try running/launching it from there.
That was on Windows NT, and for newly created accounts only, from W2K on it (sort of) remembered the last state of num-lock

Sidenote:
That "HD Ready" moniker on a TV actually means you can feed it some of the recognized HD formats (sometimes as low as 1280x720 resolution, and there are lower HD resolutions), not necessarily meaning "Full HD". It's sort of the same as "High-Speed USB" that came with USB 2.0, and that says nothing about the actual highest USB speed available :(

I've a proxy here, and after setting the DCUpdater parameters correctly, it works just fine

I'm still using PCA, so probably it's going to stay for a while :)

Do you have something to test on dual-monitor setups, or added a white- or black-list already? (Didn't mention that last one before, but it's a possible alternative or addendum to a white-list ofcourse)

In fact, why we still have Title Bars at all?
To uniquely identify several instances of the same application, or find different applications holding nearly the same content (Wordprocessor and a pdf output of that same document? Which one to start editing...)

Thanks Renegade, for this improvement
I'm always extra careful, even with lots of backups, with all my photo's, so I'm usually waiting for this kind of improvements before I even install tools like these.
3516
Hm, I've seen that happen on laptops of colleagues. AFAIK The only way to get it 'fixed' is to re-install Windows, because there is some hick-up or clash of drivers (probably older versions currently already updated) that cause this. Ppl with exact the same laptops, 'installed' using the same image-file, and gotten the same updates (controlled by a local WSUS server), one can have the issue, while none of the others has.
3517
Nice Program. But perhaps is better more automation with no command line.
Huh? what's wrong with a commandline tool? It won't get more flexible then that.

I'd suggest awk in a Windows dress, part of the gnu-win utilities

What's up with that?  Is there some gentleman's agreement in the industry that you don't talk about WxH?

Must I share my weight and height? :P :P Somebody'd probably be embarrassed :-[

Do you have more then 1 keyboardlayouts installed in Windows? Often these keyboard anomalies happen after inadvertedly switching the layout using ctrl-shift.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: JottiQ
« Last post by Ath on January 04, 2011, 05:35 PM »
Hm, bummer :(

Or to quote an older Dutch ad pay-off "Het waren 2 geweldige dagen" (It where 2 fabulous days) :-*

I get a feeling this grew indeed a bit bigger than anyone, mostly Jotti IMHO, could have imagined, so he will probably have to restructure his service (or fix bugs in the Hash search, as that doesn't really seem to work), or get a bigger sponsor :D
Lest just pray he gets his act together, and JottiQ can provide it's useful service to the public again

The current errormessage of 'Jotti only supports files upto 0,00 B.' just says it all, I guess, maybe a next version of JottiQ should say 'Service temporarily unavailable' or something in that order? (But it shouldn't be needed I hope)

Living Room / Re: Need recommendation for wireless adapter
« Last post by Ath on January 04, 2011, 04:56 PM »
I'd buy at least one of a known brand, not just the first white-brand (Chinese) adapter at the flee-market, because with the next big update (or switch) of OS's, you are not going to find any new/fitting drivers for the thing...
