Sometimes the blacklisting tools are just there to temporarily block an ip for a few minutes -- you might just want to check it again in a bit.

It's available when you RIGHT-CLICK an item in the quick paste menu.

Here's the right-click menu you see when you right-click on a clip in the quick paste popup menu:

the goal is to create a new file, not paste into an arbitrary open window

Yes exactly. This feature is ONLY used to create a new file on the desktop or inside a file explorer (or presumably another application where you can paste a FILE -- which might include some image editors, etc.).

It will only work in target applications that know how to handle a pasted FILE.  This will typically be a file explorer tool.

It's not a commonly known feature..

then what's the file name associated with Paste-As-File used for?

Let me clarify.  This feature is for pasting the clip contents (text or image) as a newly created file, with the filename specified.

Therefore, it is only useful when "pasting" into a File Explorer program, or on the desktop (though it's possible that desktop pasting doesn't work on all versions of windows?).

When you do a "paste as file" -- a new file should be created with the filename you have specified.

If pasting to the desktop is not working, maybe try pasting inside Windows File Explorer or whatever third party file explorer you use.

Make sure you are in a window where you can create a new file (and have persmission to do so).  And try triggering the paste-as-file function from the quick pop-up menu.

The paste-as-file function (an idea stolen from DC member Chris Gingerich) tries to paste the file into WHATEVER APPLICATION WINDOW IS IN FRONT.

So basically if you wanted to paste a clip on your desktop, you go to your desktop and click on it and then use the function.  Or open a file explorer and go to the directory you want to paste into and invoke it there.

General Software Discussion / Re: Modern forum software: Discourse
« Last post by mouser on June 26, 2017, 09:35 PM »
The one thing that I have gotten increasingly more uncomfortable with as I get older, as a general concept in all areas of life, is "clutter".  And it's fair to say that DC has accumulated a lot of clutter over the years. It makes it hard to find stuff and hard for new users to feel comfortable.  Unfortunately, for better or worse, DC is an eclectic place and it's hard (for me at least) to figure out ways to substantially reduce the clutter without causing real harm.

What strikes me about DC is that I go to other SMF forums, and it's night and day as far as the features.
Can you elaborate? I can't tell if you're saying that DC is better or worse  :P

Urlwolf, it's great to hear from you.  :-*

I've spent the last couple of months working on the upgrade of the website to a proper modernish cms, which is many years overdue, so I am not unsympathetic to the issue.

On the other hand, I think the forum software we use (SMF) is a good functional match for the site.

Let's face it, this site and forum is in many ways a throwback to the early 2000s.  For good and bad that's the nature of the site, anchored in some ways by the content, the established userbase, and the funding mechanism.

I'm keenly interested in making sure that DonationCoder can live on indefinitely, and that means making sure to keep the forum upgraded and running smoothly, and finally moving to a proper CMS for the website, but I'm less interested in getting everything super modernized.  It's not that I'm resisting modernization based on an aesthetic as much as the fact that with our limited resources, chasing modernity is a very low priority.

And I am resistant to changes that trade off some of the less-and-less-common strengths of this forum for strengths that are more easily found elsewhere.  So while there are some wonderful new modern community platforms (discourse, stack overflow) that are fantastic at what they do, and facilitate certain kinds of information exchanges -- it may be that our purpose in life is to maintain some of the old ways.

That's not to say that i'm uninterested in pursuing other new, more modern, website/coding projects that might be related to DC in spirit and live alongside it, so if anyone has ideas please share them!

And of course if there are functional features that you'd like to see on the forum or website I'm always interested in hearing about them.

I highly recommend the Sniper Elite series, which is now on sale. DC member Skwire and I have played the last few years of it cooperatively and it has been a hoot.
Sniper Elite 1 is probably a little long in the tooth but 2-4 are still worth your time for sure.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: Reverse Side of Flipbook
« Last post by mouser on June 23, 2017, 06:48 PM »
That's a really interesting question.. It's been a while since I've used flipbook printer..

I think it should be possible, with the right options.

The easiest thing to do would be to create a test book that has 2 sheets worth of cards, and then try it.  You don't have to use real card stock just print on regular paper until you get it to work.

I *think* that you should be able to do it by just printing the first book then flipping it around and printing the second book using the "PRINT PAGES IN REVERSE ORDER" option.

I think that should put the second video cards exactly on their opposite pair of the cards ordered in reverse.

The one thing you'll want to make sure is that the book uses the full sheet of cards, with no "waste".

Let me know if it works.

Living Room / Re: Stumped - can anyone help? Laptop drive issue
« Last post by mouser on June 23, 2017, 01:26 PM »
The path of least resistance would seem to be making a backup of the laptop drive using the laptop, using a cd-based backup tool at boot time, and a usb stick or an external usb dock/drive, and then telling client to replace the hard drive.
With the cost of hard drives, my advice would ALWAYS be, at the very first sign of trouble that has even a 1% chance of being hard drive related, is to backup the hard drive, then replace it and put the original on the shelf.

I decided the best approach was to rip out the disk - plug it into another computer and backup the data before putting it back and doing a factory restore.

Seems like the right approach to me..  Or else plug in an external drive to the laptop and clone the internal hd -- which sounds like what you were trying to do next..

OK I plugged numerous USB drives into the computer and none of them show up in the BIOS or in Paragon - reloading the disk tables doesn't find the USB drives either.

So are you saying that essentially -- your desktop couldn't read the laptop drive when plugged into a usb dock connected to the desktop, AND the laptop refused to see any external usb doc drives?

I think it was just an unlucky case where there were very few posts about this bug and with little details.
For better or worse, this has always been a fairly low-tech site with lots of info scattered everywhere, and the best way to get a good answer is to do what you did and post a question..
Hopefully what we lack in organization and polish we make up for in friendliness.
