Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEAs: desktop icon management
« Last post by nudone on March 04, 2006, 03:21 PM »
i know there are two camps around here: those of us that use the desktop like a 'desktop' and throw everything upon it and those of us (well, okay, not me) that use well organised menus with completely empty, pure and clean desktops (okay, i have an untidy desktop but i've a well organised start menu too, so, the best of both worlds, really)...

mouser, created 'desktop corral' quite a while ago which was a very handy app for combining with things like 'samurize' but i have to admit i like the sound of what 'Grizzly Bear' is requesting in the 'Phase 2' part.

for those of us that use the desktop as a temporary/work space/reminder/etc/etc type location i'd like to have different sets of 'desktops' i could save and load in when performing certain tasks, i.e. the video editing desktop with relevent files/folder and shortcuts to programs that i would be using. i'd then 'load' in a different desktop when 'browsing' or 'audio editing'.

maybe this is just a case of using virtual desktops and i'm talking a load of rubbish. i also think i'm getting a bit of deja vu here.

i use spurl all the time but i'd never heard of voo2do - looks quite nice so i'll give that a try. i think clipmarks is something i had dismissed before but i'll give it another go - there appears to be 'images' missing for quite a few of the things i searched for - i wonder is this common?

i see that the power still lies with the desktop versions in these categories of programs - i wonder how long it will take until we see truly powerful web based versions and would we be happy to trust such things?

nice review, superboyac, made me investigate further...

http://www.mylifeorg...w-by-Susan-Davis.htm provided a fuller idea of what can be done.

looks great to me - i'll try the 45 day trial and if it's still on my machine towards the end i think i'll go for the full pro version.

the planned improvements sound like a good idea also.

on a more serious note, Avedesk will allow you to:

upload files via ftp simply by dropping items onto its desktop 'desklet' ftp icon

create 'sticky' desktop notes

set shortcuts to programs

set shortcuts to folders

and even speak text when dragging and dropping text onto it's 'speak' desklet

i wouldn't be surprised if more features are added soon. at the moment there are plenty of effects and settings you can set for each 'desklet' item, i.e. transparency, mouse over animations, etc.

there is also a newer version (1.3) to try http://avedesk.needlemen.com/

i think i came across this link on digg.com http://www.aqua-soft...owthread.php?t=17372

looks to me like the best desklet icon thingy program there is - or if it isn't now, it soon will be.

for those of you who like a pure clean desktop then you aren't going to be too impressed but i hope you can see the potential this little program offers.

AndreasV, has developed a fantastic program - and he accepts donations for all his hard work.

i've not read the complete post on the aqua-soft forum as i've been playing around with 'Avedesk' as you'll see from the screengrab below...

brilliant.

just sent it to my 'boss'. he'll either love it or come running in and attack me.

i'm more than happy not to be included in the winners section. i'll pick out two cards if allen wants to do the same. i'll wait until it's finally decided upon how we choose the winners.
3510
stick everyone's name in a hat and pick one out. that is the fairest way i would say.
3511
count me in. i'll download it later.

i'll try to spend a bit more time with surfulator this week and then i'll post my suggestions. truth is, that when i went back into surfulator the other day i found it actually did what i was saying it didn't do. another truth is, that i've not made the effort to get to grips with all the features of surfulator so i wouldn't be surprised if i've missed out on a few other crucial features. my previous comment about basic requirements not being met is therefore a bit unfair.

i shall attempt to add a few worthwhile suggestions in a few days.

thanks Carol. i did the system restore thing as it seemed the most logical but i left indexing alone - normally i turn it off as i hardly ever search for things anyway.

i shall turn it off now, thanks for reminding me and confirming that it's of little use.

there's one way to know that that video is fake, and anyone who has been through this should be able to spot it..

where are the alternating stages of grief?

usually its the pure anger interspersed with almost crying and begging and pleading to god to put you out of your misery..

ha, ha, ha. absolutely true. well observed, mouser. (as i said elsewhere, though, i don't suffer from this kind of thing anymore - i obviously don't do enough with my computer to warrant it, or i must live a stress free existence.)
3516
hillarious, then tiresome, then funny again, then irritatingly fake, then hillarious again, etc.

shouting in german sounds great - doesn't even matter that i can't understand.

like mouser i've done that sort of thing for short periods - it doesn't take long to realise you are behaving irrationally and then calm down. now, that i think about it - the neighbours don't really talk to me except for a quick hello and goodbye - could this be the reason?

Finished Programs / Re: Move Installed programs from one drive to another.
« Last post by nudone on February 23, 2006, 05:23 PM »
just to clarify, i think KaysLover is not wanting to migrate to a larger hard drive so things like 'acronis migrate easy' are not the right tool, but 'application mover' that mouser has pointed out are correct, i.e. they will 'move' the installed program to another path (it wouldn't even have to be a different drive).

i remember norton (might have been symantec - poor memory) having some kind of tool that did this a long time ago. i guess they would still do it now, maybe with a different name?????

i'll admit i've not spent a lot of time with mybase, just a quick click through it, and i'm wondering does it allow editing of captured web content?

i thought the features in surfulater that allowed editing and amending extra notes to captured webpages was/is very handy.

As a former Maxthon addict, I found it hard to tear myself away it :(, but once you add the proper extensions (especially the tabbing extensions) Firefox is every bit as powerful  ;) and more so with all the other free extensions that continue to be developed.

jdd

i keep saying it, and i'm sure i'll say it again, i'll have to give firefox a proper go with the right extensions - it's just finding the time to do it. hard to change over when maxthon is set how i like right now. but with the advice coming from you, jdd, then i'm more inclined to try firefox as you are obviously aware of the differences.

sounds very encouraging. i'd never heard of mybase nor evernote. i was certainly impressed with surfulater but after some use i do miss features that i would have thought basic requirements.

thanks, superboyac, going to download mybase right now...

Man, the author is human like me. He or she has got to go sometime just like me and you. What if he goes before me and I still need the software desperately and there's no one to activate or what if his system crashes !

i never thought of that before - good point.
