General Software Discussion / Re: "Interrupts" - killing my CPU!
« Last post by Grorgy on February 17, 2008, 10:02 PM »
my laptop with a 1.5 celeron m sits around 2 to 6 % with occasional spikes around 20 -25%, with 44 processes currently running, including outlook 2003 notezilla eset security suite, firefox and so on.  I get nervous if its working hard doing nothing, seems to me its not doing what it should be, any piece of software that has to run all the time had better do not much when its not doing its job or its life on the virtual grorgy world is short.  I have enough trouble with things i need but dont need to run all the time taking all my processor.

Edit - I am only mentioning faststone as its the most recent one i've seen i have no connection with them or anything like that

I also prefer the cling stickers for windows but I'll slap a bumper sticker on my old wreck if that's what you get.

The clingy ones on the window would be my pick to, can move them easily, they are inside, so wont get wrecked by the weather.

General Software Discussion / Re: Software licences
« Last post by Grorgy on February 04, 2008, 02:30 PM »
Yep me too 100% agreement, and the per machine licence very quickly puts much software out of reach very quickly, even for those with just a desk and a laptop.  Sometimes you have to buy 2 licences, but its always with more thought and a more thorough search for alternatives.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Grorgy on February 03, 2008, 04:30 PM »
While not strictly a free firewall i suppose, eset here in Australia are offering ESS for the same price as for NOD32, well it may not be the best firewall in the world I really couldnt say, but it does all i need and the price was right (50% student discount as well  ;)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Bits Du Jour and GAOTD one-day deals
« Last post by Grorgy on January 29, 2008, 05:58 PM »
I agree with curt, people here either know about or quickly learn about sites like bits du jour and can choose to subscribe to the site or not.  people who have experience of, or have heard great things about some particular offer i think would be best.  Otherwise donation coder could/would be seen as an affiliate type site which I think mouser has rejected in another thread.

Good idea Marc, and welcome, your idea seems to provide both for a method to gain an experts opinion if one is needed, and to respect their privacy and free time.

I think Rhutobello is right. People come here for fun and relaxation, to discuss topics and issues of interest, and the 'gurus' help out when they are able to or feel like it.  In the months Ive been here I've noticed that most are very generous with their time and knowledge, but they do it because they want to, not because of some expectation that they will.  Seems to me the last thing people need is a hard day at the office followed by another (potential) few hours of answering questions offering advice and so on on a website they come to for a bit of fun and relaxation with like minded folk.

Anyway thats my  :two:

General Software Discussion / Re: The great defrag shootout
« Last post by Grorgy on January 25, 2008, 07:51 PM »
I've been using that Puran Defrag that someone mentioned, its a good little defrag tool, and according to perfect disks analysis of my drives, it does a better job than perfectdisk at defragging, and the optimization and so on seems to be on a par.  Doesnt have a fancy gui or anything, but works and works musch faster than perfect disk for me.  http://www.puransoftware.com/

Edit - pd8 pro,  i havent updated/graded whatever

Living Room / Re: Suffering over USB
« Last post by Grorgy on January 22, 2008, 03:16 PM »
I use a little wellend sunbright 2.5" enclosure with a 160 gb hard disk in it.  So long as i plug it into one of the ports on the laptop itself i have no problem with it not working, was very easy to put together too, even for someone like me who has to think about which end of a screw driver to use  ;D   :-[  The enclosure does have a hole in it for a 5v power supply, but it is not supplied with one and the instructions suggest that for most people it wont be necessary.

I use the CCleaner method, its really quite easy.  I first tried to go through all the cookies i wanted to keep, then just gave up and deleted the lot, then, with a clean start I just go through a relatively short list of new ones and only keep the ones i want.  These days mostly i just delete them all apart from the ones I've saved.

General Software Discussion / Re: WordWeb
« Last post by Grorgy on January 17, 2008, 03:56 PM »
You have to love the licence on the 'free' version.  You need to be a sustainable user, no more than 4 flights a year and dont own an SUV lol  (SUVs should really be officially renamed Urban Assault Vehicles in IMO)

After 30 days WordWeb may freely be used by a "sustainable user". For the purpose of this licence a "sustainable user" is someone that personally

takes less than 4 flights (2 return flights) in any 12 month period for any reason
AND does not own an SUV (sports utility vehicle)
Whenever a user no longer meets the "sustainable user"" requirement, and they have installed the product for more than 30 days, they must uninstall the product or purchase WordWeb Pro.

Filters can cause all sorts of fun.  I was doing a course in natural resource management at one point, and as you can imagine, studying animals and so on, google searches for things like 'sexual reproduction in  mammals' were fairly common and quite legitimate, but they sure did make the alarms ring.   ;D

I bought it for the synchronisation, but the synchronisation of the read items just never worked, they didn't respond to email so i gave up on them, i still think its a good reader but not nearly as good as advertised.

I've always had the feeling he had no idea why it did what it did anyway, he was always blaming stardock, so if he is playing with those sections of code, maybe, just maybe it will fix it, I live in hope, as its my favourite file manager

That is great news about the skin support, as it stands at the moment the thing is unusable with windowblinds, even when its told to ignore it, just loses its classic skin, so if they can fix that it would be fantastic

Living Room / Re: What should I do with my audio CDs?
« Last post by Grorgy on January 11, 2008, 05:29 PM »
I've ripped all of mine to MP3s and WMAs (before i had a sensible way of ripping to mp3 and was new to the whole idea of ripping them anyway :-[).  I keep the CDs as a backup and as some sort of security to say "yeah, I did really buy these"  and also because I ripped them to MP3 I wanted to have them available in the original if I could.

good thing to, it maybe the best rssreader around but some of its features have just never worked for me, synching for instance (why i really wanted it), sort of half works, others do it better but not automatically, and the so called premium customer support for paying users certainly never materialized.

Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by Grorgy on January 06, 2008, 12:48 AM »
This community, in my brief time here, has been open and friendly, and I have never been offended by any post in these pages.  Some I don't bother with, not interested, but offended? never.  The only hint of real offensiveness in my opinion is this thread, that is somehow trying to say that because I do not agree with one persons views I am therefore a lesser person and should change my beliefs and desires to fit their world view.  Well stuff that.  The world is made up of many individuals and we all have different views on just about everything, we may find some like minded people in some areas whose views on other topics are opposite to our own.  If we can't live with difference then we are still in the dark ages.

Having read a bit of CWuestefeld blog pages, i don't think there is a lot we have in common, but his comments above I generally agree with.
