Check out http://coursera.org  That site is hosting some of the open courses from popular university. I think CMS like that could be improved on user interaction and test/quiz level. It is not much interactive as of now. Just letting you know so that you can find something interesting in it.

I am just waiting for the day when web developers around the world learn to design website without flash. Youtube found a way to add HTML5 but it seems far from complete, atleast it is a start.

If you read rest of the thread then you'll see, I am making similar point against Linux DE designers.  :D

Where did get that from? Steve Job hasn't been minimalist towards UI design for the last decade.
I meant that as a sarcastic remark on one-button apps.

I didn't mean it as attack to entire FOSS/Linux community. It's just those desktop environment designers from canonical and elementary  who are acting like a priest and generalizing about crowd that turns me off. This thread is rant against these wanna-be desktop designers. I don't understand one more thing - why in the world of multicore processors, linux developers are worried about system resources spent on multi-tasking? People say linux is about choices but more I digg into community I realize that team DE teams are obsessed with iOS and innovation for the sake of it. They don't offer choices when they move ahead in the name of innovation. You have to switch to something else, that's the only choice linux community offers. It's like my way or someone else's high way. lol Why break things that are not broken? Is there any thing related to "minimize" button that I am missing? Is there any gain by not allowing icons on desktop? Is there anything to gain by keeping one app at a time on desktop?

I always thought that steve's minimalistic approach towards UI is going to live forever. Just check out this article from elementary OS team. Now like any other linux distro they're after killing the minimize and maximize button. They assume that one must either maximize the app or kill it and put it under dock. Ubuntu is already making changes on these fronts, same goes for gnome. I know this position of "not needing minimize button" can be argued. But the way these guys are putting up case turns me off from their distro. I mean seriously, "save state" and "maximize or kill"  are their options? People are using linux on low end machines to keep them going. Elementary OS dev team is kinda obsessed with apple, ios and their designs and it reflects in their way of handling the distro.

On windows XP, I am running winamp, 6 file manager windows, word, firefox -3 tabs, Iron chrome 2 tabs in the taskbar. I am working in between these windows. I am happy to see they are minimized. I also have virtual desktop but only use it for NSFW stuff and that's all.

I don't understand how "saving state" and "maximize or kill" type of thinking  makes someone more productive. I thought computers were about being multitasking and not about doing 1 thing at a time until you get bored with the machine and look at your girlfriend.

I like changes, be it HUD from gnome or some design change like some os x is bringing on the table. But assuming all personal computers to be like tablet or mobile phone and restricting users to limited options is not cool.

  • Removing global application menu(HUD in ubuntu)- bad idea.
  • Removing minimize button - bad idea.
  • Not allowing folders on desktop - bad idea.
  • Keeping only wallpaper and dock on screen along with always maximized apps - bad idea (not only from casual usage but also from nsfw angle)
  • Removing scrollbar vertical from the distro - bad idea.
  • Assuming Developers knows best - Priceless, bad idea of the millennium.

Some of the linux developers should rename themselves as priests who do over-the-head generalizations. This is one more reason to have windows or mac as an alternate machine to save your brain from such obsessive madness.

How do valuable sites keep going?

I don't know answer to this question. All I can say is, that it shouldn't be the way with which people are moving away from any other annoying ad plastered site. It's about ad blindness and annoyance. I can tell you this from my experience, Adsense on tech site is going to earn less revenue from now on for plenty of reasons.

General Software Discussion / Re: How did google think I'm sharing that ?
« Last post by mahesh2k on February 21, 2012, 08:12 AM »
I think you're not aware of the new changes in their privacy policy and new account management features. They used gmail contacts to send random G+ invitations to people last year. That is how I got invite from G+ from one of my friend who never shared anything on G+ but randomly system sent email to check one of his post to all his friends, post that never existed to begin with.

Google now diggs into G+, Reader, docs, gmail, contacts and calendar data to know more about you. Note that even if you delete google account, analytics will keep on logging data from X IP address and will continue to collect data.

Your google search while you're logged into the system will be based on your G+ circle, your friends activity in Gmail, search and G+. I shared a screenshot in google+ thread you can check out how annoying it is to have search influenced by friends and family.

what happens if you find that ads generate 2x the amount that Donations do?

I doubt that.

Nothing happens.

There are many cases going against them.

Google vs Mocality
Google penalized for pharma ads
Google trolling by buying companies with patents
Google forcing privacy policy changes
Discontinued products where they had no chance to gain public information
Bypassing ghostery and ABP

What I find funny is that, journalists from gigaom and other tech news sites are still praising google for whatevery crap they drop. I was checking post from labnol on this issue and i found one comment funny - "bank employees check out accounts often, what's wrong if google does it on their servers". Just because they can doesn't mean we should give them freedom to do manipulate. Tomorrow, what's wrong if we install cam in mall's changing room, bedroom, bathroom? Hey, it's to protect you from some threat. isn't it? I think corporate and government brainwashing is so thick, people are not aware of that where things are wrong and what are their rights.
366
We all know that advertisements that fool the user into thinking they are part of the content, are some of the worst in the world...and they can drive people away from the forums and website they are on
It depends how you are looking at making money off ads. Annoying ads placement are the one that pays the most. Any other position is usually ignored and the point of CPC becomes useless. In case of CPM ads you can place them anywhere and they're going to earn you money. That is not the case with CPC ads. People are adblind and unless you annoy then it's hard to get click. Nobody clicks on ads in footer but they do in top nav and sidebar. You have to place where they get clicks irrespective of what people think or get annoyed. If it's about money, so have to be played with it's rules. CPC is not about what people like, it's about where and how people click.

One more point that there are some discussions in donationcoder where swear words are used in quotes. Adsense usually don't show on pages with swear words. No matter how mild they are, there are cases where people got booted due to excessive use of swear words.
367
To add some more points to this thread. Following ad placement areas are more likely to generate some clicks.

Position 1:  Under the forum nav bar or inside first post under headline.

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6305/74position.jpg

Position 2: At the end of first post.

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1386/99position2.jpg

Note: 700p x 80 text ads and Text link slots will perform much better. If you're going with adsense then don't go with image ads or flash/video ads at all. They're annoying and surfer will hate it for sure. I am sure by now you have figured out the text link ads, contextual ads setup in adsense.

I don't know if you're paying attention to the analytics stats. If you can create SMF plugin that checks high traffic(Top content, High exit/entry, medium bounce rate (50-90%) pages from your analytics stat and only show ads on these pages, then that is also going to help in terms of revenue. You don't have to place ads on any other pages than that, or you can simply show ads to search engine users.

368
Project wonderful ads are ugly and the CPM rate is horrible. Browse the advertising directory and see what typical budget advertisers are throwing up. It's very low and not worth for this experiment. If I'm not wrong then DC views go above 1k+ (Hell, it should be more than 10-30k) per day and for that PW is not at all suitable. Buysellads, Tribal Fusion or Carbon ads will bring much higher revenue if DC's application gets approval from their sales team.
369
Let me share my observations.

One month is very short time period for testing adsense ads. Why? there are two reasons ---

1) It takes atleast 2-3 weeks to adsense algorithm to settle down in terms of CPC/CPM value on your site.
2) In one month search engine traffic fluctuation also changes the amount earned by the website, this by assuming search engine users click more compared to regular users.

Few more reasons - ad placement and areas where you can get more or sufficient clicks for consistent revenue can't be evaluated in one month. Google search team is also manually/algorithmically checking the placement of ads and overall content to ad ratio to weight the websites. Considering the donationcoders popularity for some keywords, It may negatively impact website in terms of SEO if ad placement and ratio of ad/content is not as per the algorithm. One more important point is that most of us here are using ABP and considering the tech savvy crowd in DC and surfers in tech niche, It's hard to figure out the type of people, their location and ad placement suitable for them in small period like one month. You can skip this by enabling ads only to search surfers, this will give you better data.

One more point - advertisers in tech niche are paying very low cost per click, so results that you see in one month are not what you see for entire year in terms of revenue generation. In one month you may get more clicks due to surfers finding ads by surprise and and once settled for more than one month you'll start to fetch less clicks. My assumption is that site is likely to get more clicks if tested for just one month but then again the ads are less likely to be relevant if placed on behavioral pattern ( you can disable it in adsense settings). If you set the ads for relevancy then ads are likely to be in tech niche (may or may not be high in cpc value). So..

All this analysis part aside, main point is  - one month is too short time for testing adsense ads. If you want to test ads that convert better in terms of revenue, try carbon ads or buysellads (similar to Project wonderful but they have high paying advertisers). Another option is viglink, Unfortunately I can't test it for now but I'm sure you can because community sites like DC are easy to pass their approval.

My 2 cents.

Developer's Corner / Re: A myth called the Indian programmer
« Last post by mahesh2k on February 14, 2012, 08:02 PM »
I know things are changed after 2007, afterall we're talking about that article after 5 years.  Why just leave it to "programmer" ? This applies to almost every engineering student in India (except students from IIT/IISC and some of the top colleges). Rest of the other engineering colleges produce what we call here "wall-mart coders". We're brainwashed to crack Google and Microsoft interviews and then end up being a clerk or some highly paid manager. MBA's are at even worst position, they rant about zen and six sigma stuff but never understand how that applies to market. All they do is fulfill the criteria of recruiter to get inside the company. They learn stuff only to get hired. They don't see why some things work, it's just for grades and to land up in highly paid job.

I questioned my professors about the flaws in the system during my engineering time, got beaten and gave up. I learned one lesson out of this - When there is money on the line, do stuff because people above you says so even if it is wrong. You know why people here are fans of Steve jobs and gates? Not because of their money and lifestyle. It's because of their ability to succeed after their drop-out years. Teens in India commit suicide if they get low grades or drop out in engineering or medical college. It's the only less painful option for them, I don't disagree with that either. Society is so tightly monitoring this success and failure of people, It's hard to beat this without taking risk of lifestyle and friends/family. I don't know if these types of extreme situations exist outside this country. Considering how Diaspora's founder committed suicide maybe it could apply to many other places too I guess. Read the plot of this movie on wikipedia and you'll get the picture.

The reason you see "factory coders" here because If you wish to be a programmer here, you have to experiment- with startups and your knowledge. You're putting your life on the line. If you fail, you end up getting low paying job (<200$) or will simply thrown out of system with no way of getting back in, not to forget frustration and other things that come in life. It's all about getting money in bank account for factory coders. Blame social norms and culture for this. In India people have a tendency to look down on others based on how much they earn, their overall assets, what trendy they do. Hell, 99.995% Indian females choose partner based on how much he earns, that's how it works there. If you fight with this system then you're loser for them. I'm yet to do any non-programming job just for the sake of money. I took that risk. My parents think that by working with low paying financial start-up is a sign that I did something wrong in my life. Which is both funny and frustrating at the same time. By no means I'm rich like my friends who compromised on that front and are at position where Indian society thinks they're successful and living happily(whatever that means). I fought that system and lost (conclusion: money and society wins).

The reason many Indians feel comfortable around people who can experiment(referring to app's case) is because society is restricting people for not to take risks, or encourage to innovate. Students are scolded not to execute programs outside the syllabus of college. Anyway, this all is changing right now as per my observation. I see many Indian programmers flying out of this country to take that risk. Check picplum with indian co-founder and many such US based startups with Indian founders. I hope someday, this junk food social system will break.

Living Room / Re: May I Have A Download Please?
« Last post by mahesh2k on February 13, 2012, 09:24 AM »
It is already happening in Movie theaters here in India. They have this Satstream technology which airs the shows based on the number of leased plays contracted between theater and distribution channel. I'm sure you can check this technology in Imax theaters. Only thing that can stop hard media distribution is ISP's limiting the internet speed. As of now there are many countries where practical implementation of this is difficult not impossible. Even with 3G, it's hard to keep up with the streamed movies here in india. I think EU/US have much better speed and if the ISPs are not limited with data then surely this will take off. Amazon and other online movie streaming sites are selling online plays for 99 cents for sometime with limited success. I don't know how many users are watching movies that way but TV or sport events are in demand via these streaming channel. It'll be easy for pirates to telesync these movies, unless ofcourse they come up with TV with signal with customer code that is shown in tv to catch the viewers who are watching pirated copy. It's like catching a pirate from code in pdf file.

GNU Save us all from this insanity.
