I think once apon a time with aircraft many of the fault remediation processes were manual, but now they are mechanical often controlled and/or initiated by software.

As this develops I can't see a reason why the same can't happen with motor vehicles.

@Perry Mowbray / apankrat : Of course, this (postpone deletion) would be only complementary as it doesn't replace versioning, at all. It was only a solution for unwanted deletions for those who, for some reasons wouldn't want versioning but still keep some control over what gets deleted or not.

Yes, sorry: I was being tongue-in-cheek... being keen on a versioning option, the more issues it addresses increases the likelyhood of implementation. Though I'm very heartened by this...
I will do it... just need to figure out the UI bit.

Personally I'd be happy with the time versioned copies to exist in sub directories of the backup job parent (with a limit on the number kept)... which'd mean if you ever stop versioning that old versions would remain, etc.

Another solution is to allow the user to insert some file/directory masks to indicate for what files/folders should the program should always ask for deletion confirmation (not renaming or moving, of course...).

That could also be done on a per backup job basis (though not as powerful), which would make the backup jobs more readable in some ways (you'd get more little jobs rather than one big one with different file masks for the settings  :-\??)

Other (completely different) approach to that problem: postpone any deletions (user specifies the time).

Very true (pity  ;) ... I'd love to see the versioning though)

It would be great if it had some history, just in case I delete something on a side by mistake to be able to get it back that way.

There is a request on their forum for versioning and some discussion about using timestamps (I guess could be hours or days or even weeks to define your backups).

I would very much like to see this type of versioning  :Thmbsup:

But it is certainly very interesting, and I really hope that this stuff pans out well. It would save me a lot of stress and curse words while I drive. :)

As I was explaining it to my brother over the weekend... it would also be extremely beneficial to people who could not normally drive because of some handicap (my brother has 3 down syndrome sons, and their transportation is a constant issue because public transport does not go everywhere they need to...). Similar to another project Google's recently funded: The Shweeb -- on the Shweeb even blind people would be able to cycle to work and even people not able to cycle would be able to be pushed along without extra effort!!

If I'm very late to bed it's usually because I'm struggling with something... and generally what happens is that after I give up and call it a morning and climb into bed the answer to the problem occurs to me. At that point the struggle is not to get back up again and see if my subconscious was right   ;)... but to trust my memory and go to sleep satisfied

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Teaser Update: ContactFX 0.0.2.0
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on October 13, 2010, 10:02 PM »
Regarding Display_Name, that is it basically. However please realize that there should be a setting where one selects how they want their contact names to display: First_Last, Last_First, etc. And the ability to set it separately for each contact if desired. Otherwise you end up with contacts displayed like: "The White Company" displaying as "Company, White The"

You can edit the file yourself to what ever you like Jim. Take the file supplied and change the source value to suit. You can also edit the value in ContactFX on an adhoc basis.

You can also create a new one called displayLastFirst and another called displayFirstLast and even another called displayCompany which could all have different source and/or default values, etc.

When contact templates are done I presume there will be a company template with a displayName set up to suit.

Also Note: That there is no requirement to have a given name and a family name in the record: Companies don't have those. ( :-[ But I think I set Given Name to be required once -- that's a left over from testing the max / min settings that'll I'll have to delete ) ... I imagine that on companies there will only be formatted name.

Done but still no dice  :(

Actually... doesn't just sit there... it seems to be sending an Right Mouse Button click to the active window? I had to quit Auspex to type this because the Window's Context menu kept coming up. (see attachment in previous post)
I've noticed it before, but after restarting Auspex it's back to doing nothing again...

It doesn't do anything with mouse messages at all... is there a chance you have a windows hot key set up to bring up the context menu?

Can I send you a logging version? It doesn't track any passwords or anything as you hopefully know...

Of course I'll try a logging version... and I don't have any hotkeys set up and I've tried quitting other programmes.

What's odd is that close Auspex and the problem disappears.

...and pre 37 everything was fine and nothing's changed on my system  :-\

I can quit and go back to previous version OK.

Yoinks! Can you clear your Exceptions list, and maybe also try creating a new replacement? Maybe I was clumsy when adding defaults to new fields.

Can you add a couple more fields

You may like to have a look at the beginnings of userFields:
(see attachment in previous post)

This will allow you to create as many fields for your own use as you like  ;)

Of course... I will be adding more to the programme....

Hey Jim:

And I initially thought that the Formatted Name field would be kind of a "Display As" field, automatically filled by the other name fields that are manually populated, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Or at least not yet - perhaps this is simply something that isn't yet implemented?

Have a look at the new version and the displayName userField attached to this post (or in the OP):
(see attachment in previous post)

That file will modify the displayName field to dynamically display an aggregation of other fields. Is that what you meant? The source string could also be added to the defaultvalue if you didn't want it to be dynamic (just filled at creation time). The same can be done with any field...

« Last post by Perry Mowbray on October 13, 2010, 08:13 AM »
I've just uploaded 0.0.2.0 that should fix all reported bugs and finish the implementation of the main panel (though not all the fields).

This release includes a significant improvement in ContactFX functions, so I thought I better explain how they work...

Functions are defined within {} and must be prefaced with an "=" (like field links). Functions have the general form of { FunctionName 'optional constant' functionObject }. To use a function just type it into the appropriate text box, eg:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. ={UCASE "mowbray"}
would display as "MOWBRAY".

Functions generally comprise:
  • a function name: case insensitive
  • an optional function constant: defined within ''
  • a function object, that can be:
    • a string: defined within ""
    • a path to a field, eg: id#fieldnumber or id#fieldname
    • a function: defined within {}
    • an array of function objects: defined within []

Current Functions
Initialise:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { INITIALISE name.additional }
If the text in the Additional Name field is "perry" the above function will return "P."

UCase:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { UCASE 1#name.family }
If the text in the Family Name field of Contact #1 is "mowbray" the above function will return "MOWBRAY"

Join:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { JOIN ', ' [ "me" , name.additional , { UCASE name.additional(2) } ] }
This is a conditional join: if the object being joined is non-blank then it is joined to the previous joined result with the constant. If the text in the first Additional Name is "myself" and the text in the second Additional Name field is "i" then the above function will return "me, myself, I"

Ternary:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { name.additional ?? 'Additional Name is empty' }
Well, like a ternary... if the Object is blank then the constant is returned otherwise the Object is returned. For example: If the Additional Name field is empty then the above function will return the constant "Additional Name is empty".
If the Additional Name field has the text "Samuel" then the above function will return "Samuel".

Conditional Pad:
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { 'Mr. ' && name.family}

If the text in the Family Name field is empty the above function will return an empty string "".
If the Family Name field has the text "Mowbray" the above function will return "Mr. Mowbray"
Code: Ruby [Select]
  1. { name.family && ' esq.'}

If the text in the Family Name field is empty the above function will return an empty string "".
If the Family Name field has the text "Mowbray" the above function will return "Mowbray esq."

This userField:  has a definition that will modify the default displayName field:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. <fielddefinition>
  2.   <name value="displayname" />
  3.   <source value="=  { { JOIN ' ' [ name.given , { INITIALISE name.additional } , { UCASE name.family } ] } ?? 'New Entry' }" />
  4. </fielddefinition>

When unzipped into the userFields subDirectory the displayName field display:
Given Name = "Perry"
Additional Name = ""
Family Name = "Mowbray"
Display Name = "Perry MOWBRAY"

Given Name = "Sandra"
Additional Name = "Jane"
Family Name = "Mowbray"
Display Name = "Sandra J. MOWBRAY"

The easiest way to link between contacts is to drag the field to be linked to, onto the the field to be linked from holding down the ALT key. Linked fields can be referenced by Contact.ID or Contact.GUID and Field.ID or Field.Name, although they are always displayed as Contact.ID#Field.ID.

Next stop... list Panel  :Thmbsup:

I'm very sad to hear the pain in your post, and very sorry to hear the finality, but hopefully it doesn't mean a total withdrawl from DC -- you're presence here has been very important and appreciated by me.

Commercial success is a very fickle thing, most successes can be tracked back to good luck rather than good management... so I wouldn't worry too much, but lost dreams are always painful.

I really hope with a rest and a break that what you obviously once enjoyed can become good fun again.

All the best for your coming decisions!!

It's realllly easy to do, the only thing you'd have to change is start uploading new versions at a predictable url with a predictable name (and not change the file name with each version).  It can be a zip file or a full installer.  If you start doing that i'll make the update file for you to use.

If you're going to do it eventually you might as well do it now and make it easier on your beta testers to grab the new version.

I'd be happier if it was done after NANY completes... I like to know the number of downloads  ;)
375
does that mean it should be eligible as a NANY entry?  From this subject, I would say the consensus is NO.  Please charge.  Please tell us about it, and even make a thread just for that software offering.
Well said! We may be verging on splitting hairs but this isn't about the worth of any particular piece of software. It's about whether shareware comes under the umbrella of NANY.
