General Review Discussion / Re: VPN/SSH Tunneling software
« Last post by Rover on May 25, 2006, 11:25 PM »
I have a spare pc, and once its up and running again, I plan to install ubuntu to run as a firewall
For some reason I read this and thought it said you have a linux box... sorry for the confusion.  Once you have ubuntu installed, sshd should be available :)

Kind of funny that they're in the ad for their own gotcha column.  :P

broken85 - this may be of interest to you: http://juice.altiris.com/svs

Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) is a new offering from Altiris that isolates applications and data and allows you to instantly add, remove or reset applications on a Windows workstation. With SVS installed you can completely avoid conflicts between applications or even between different versions of the same application.

Creating a "virtualized" application is a fairly straightforward process. However, our early-adopters have proven that virtualization can be as much art as it is science. That's why we created this Wiki area for software virtualization best practices.
-Their wiki

It sounds like it's what you're looking for.  I looked at this a few weeks ago and the core of their system is a virtual file system that hides applications, dlls, etc. that you don't want in use.  I'm sure there is more to it than that to manage running processes, etc.

Good luck.

General Review Discussion / Re: VPN/SSH Tunneling software

Josh,

If you are accessing a Linux box from windows, you must use PuTTY.   :)

Once you are using (and Loving) PuTTY, you can looking in the Connection Settings, under SSH at the Tunnels section.  From there you can Turn on X Windows forwarding.  You can also tunnel ports.

For example:  I have a server that can SSH to via port 22.  For our discussion, that is the only open port in the firewall.  I want to use VNC on port 5901, so I add the following to my session:
Source Port: 5901
Desitnation: remote.server.ip:5901
 - remote.server.ip is either the ip address or hostname form the REMOTE server's perspective.
And click the Add button.

Once I SSH to my remote server using my username/password or Pub Key, I can connect to my VNCServer using the tunnel.  I fireup VNCviewer and browse to the tunneled address:
127.0.0.1:5901

Notice that to my vncviewer, it looks like I should be connecting back to my local PC, using the loop-back address.  But PuTTY is listening on port 5901 and taking my connection through the tunnel to the remote server.

Result, I end up using the VNC Desktop on my remote box without exposing port 5901 to the outside world.

Yea for SSH Tunnels

i can't believe how many cms i've looked at recently and not been thrilled with any..
AMEN!  I pretty much gave up on finding a good CMS.  One of these days, I'll look again.  There were/are several that need a few more versions to be ready... I'm just not going to run them while they grow.  Besides, we need to see if they become abandonware or not.

General Software Discussion / Re: Map a Drive via SFTP
« Last post by Rover on May 22, 2006, 09:07 PM »
I'm so lame... I thought I posted about this great alternative.  :-[

WinSCP3 http://winscp.net does almost as good as sftpdrive.  What it does not do is map a drive.
What it does do, is let you connect in a Norton Commander like interface and do almost exactly the same things.  Copy, move, edit, rename, delete, etc. etc. via SSH.

Best of all.... IT'S TOTALLY FREE!  :o  :D

here's the screenshot  :)

PS: I tried to get a discount on sftpdrive.  They replied quickly and said they'd love to help, but aren't yet in a position to offer discounts.

Hey wreklessxx - nice job.

A lot of the other submissions have a sort of a white out affect going on.  Lots of whie in the color to make it fade in.

The wreklessxx submissions have more of a jewel tone look.  It makes the banner pop a little more.

I only mention this becuase I am proud of myself for being able to figure out the differecne. I'm usually color challenged according to my wife :)

I absolutely do NOT have an email addiction.   Most of it is SPAM anyway.

I DO have a DC Forum additction.  I refresh the "unread messages" quite often when I am home  :-\

I'm not sure I want to fix that  :P

As always, we aren't zealots for free software or open source.  There are innate values in those kinds of software, but our primary concern should be: what is the best tool for the job.  If we can make a contribution to the internet by being a resource for discovering the best tools without regard to hype and marketing dollars, I think everyone will be the better for it.
I generally agree with the rest of the post, I just wanted to comment about the above quote.

I think a lot of DC folks have shown that we aren't just after freeware and/or open source; we're looking for the best tool to solve a particular problem.  I'm willing to shell out $$ for a really good solution and so are others.

The only reason I want to emphasize this is so we don't get caught up in a freeware/open source only thought pattern.  Even if I do mention it a lot!   :P

I also think DC is already and should continue to grow as a valuable internet resource.

Suggestion:  Can we have a mini-reviews page with links to all of the mini-review pages?  From the actual reviews have a link to the discussion for that review.  It'd be nice to have a discussion topic specifically attached to each review.  $0.02

At the risk of promoting .NET (which I hate) Linux servers can run .net applications using a thing called Mono.  It was developed by the same guys who did the ...umm.. err... it was either the Gnome guys or the Evolution guys.  Anyway, it seems to run about everything.

But please, if you're going to write a CMS, do it in a real language.  :-[

OK, even without the explore extension, whatever, there are some things that can quickly search files:
- GDS (it kinda sucks, but it does it)
- dtSearch.  Google them.  They build an index to quickly search everything.
- Novell has a Linux desktop search call Beagle that monitors file write activity so it doesn't have to search/index in the middle of the night (like GDS and dtSearch).

I only mention these because dtSearch can be embedded and used as part of an application so it doesn't take a goodle or microsoft to write something like that.

A quick search of sourceforge found: a lot of dead projects and a lot of GDS plug-ins.

It seems that managing information is a big task :)

General Review Discussion / Re: Opinions on remote PC control software

RE RAdmin

There are a lot of things I like about it.  It lets you do file xfer.  You can screencast your screen to someone.  I feel pretty safe about it being secure.  However, I don't like that you have to set up (yet aother) a hole in your firewall and port forwarding.  I also am not thrilled about the whole client install thing for a quick remote control session.  I liked it enough, I signed up as a reseller.

I had RAdmin installed for a long time and used it successfully.  When I rebuilt my box last year, it didn't make it back on.  VNC has sort of taken it's place.  (Although VNC cannot xfer files)

I think I'd really like something like Gotomypc, but I'm not willing to pay those guys $20/month for it.  The benefits of GOTOMYPC being:  1) No firewall  2) No client setup 3) no domain name issues.

QNX is on of those OS's I'd love to need.  I first saw it at '89 Comdex (remember when that was cool?) and thought it looked kinda neat.  Then I read about their micro-kernel design in the 90's and thought it was really cool.  Right around 2000 they had a demo floppy that had the Kernel, IP stack and a GUI brower all in 1.44MB.  BTW it was real time mutli-tasking too.

Anyway, I have never had a really good excuse to buy it, but I keep hoping someday I will.

Great analogy 7 - You still need to go to the gas station to get the free gas....for every tank.

DC only wants to see you 4 times in your life.  Actually, we like to see you (software user) more, but understand not everyone can hang around with us :)

Hey Spivey -  Welcome to the site.  Being that this is one of my favorite threads, I'm glad you like it too.

I've been contemplating some similar thoughts.  As I started out to discuss the database design (in another thread), I wondered why we needed to create a database at all.  What we could do is focus on writing cool extensions for Google Desktop and allow it to search for our stuff.  That is effectively using the filesystem as the database.

My concerns where:
1) Not cross platform.  Sorry, I like linux and I want to move there someday.
2) We now require GDS for our notes... not a self contained package anymore.
3) Doesn't fit with my end game. -- see below

Somewhere along the line, I really think we need a database oriented file system.  Or at least a better hook into the existing filesystem to associate attributes.  Or maybe just a database standard to write applications against.  You start with a nice Note Taking system, add some To Do templates,  a little reminder flag, some date functions and pretty soon you've got a nice PIM.  Best of all, you should be able to link a note to an appointment without having to copy/paste, etc.

Associating attributes to files is the key to the virtual views you mentioned.  The files have to have some common attribute to associate them and make the association meaningful.  If you can associate attributes to a file, you can create virtual views easily.  (psudocode: select files where attributes contains "vfolder1")

Does that make any sense?  :)

Developer's Corner / Re: MOANTS Database Design
« Last post by Rover on May 15, 2006, 06:18 PM »
You've defined database requirements - but we're not talking about building a database engine. We're talking about building note taking software. Program functionality comes first, starting with interaction design.
Normally I'd say your 100% right.  however in this case, we are designing an application that does not have a single user interface.  We're designing a database where you can roll your own interface to suite your need.  Now, we probably have 1 or 2 in mind to use this, but the application in this case is really data storeage.  How we input the data and how we report it is slightly irrelivant because the interface will vary according to user's individual tastes.

That being said, there are a few non-negotiables for Note-Taking software. That is what we're trying to capture here.  If you want to extend your UI to include a color preference field, then you'll need to do that in your own table.  The basics, however, should be available to any UI.
