Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Bvckup

Another remark on the filter panel :
1/ Is a '\' mandatory at the end of "location" field ?
2/ Would it be possible to edit and not jut remove the defined exclusions ?

Thanks to have moved my previous 2 messages to this thread.   :)

BTW, I am forgetting something important : while performing some tests a few weeks ago, source folder was on a local HDD and destination on a network folder, I encountered strange issues with previous build, that garbled the ownership permissions on the destination, such that I couldn't even open/read backup-ed files.  I managed to repair some attributes.  I usually have no problem whatsoever with that network drive.

I remember it all started with an error message from bvckup looking like "can't set ownership on dest files".  I'll give it another try next week with the new build.

I didn't mention it right away because I was busy and it's very difficult to explain in details what happens.  But there was definitely something wrong when using  my network drive, which usually shows no issue regarding file attributes.

@Armando - not to mention it was made in Canada :)
@mouser - done - https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=24261.0
@MerleOne - have a look here, let me know what you think - http://www.bvckup.co...opic_show.pl?pid=258

Thanks for making the link with my other post !  I guess I missed you answer on your forum.  I think my preference would go to a special folder containing previous revisions, some kind of archive folder.  But it would be great if you could use, as an option, winrar solid archive to store revisions of a same file.  Solid archiving (in winrar) is then deadly space-efficient (while taking some more time).  What I am concerned about is the space taken.

For instance, when I edit a big excel file, I save it each time I make a critical change, this can be 10-20 times per day, sometimes even more.  If the file is 4 MB big, without a clever way to handle the versions, it would take a huge space on my HDD.

Also, the next step would also be to manage those revisions, purge them at times; either manually or with a specific setting.
355
If you could add versioning that would be so great !
356
I think the question is becoming quite academic, this optimizer lacks some major features :
- the ability to exclude big files or specific files
- a stop function that stops right away

And was I dislike most : when a drive has been optimized, if I relaunch an optimization, it starts over again and take almost as much time as during the first optimization, so that's not really an optimization.

General Software Discussion / Re: Splash Lite 1.60
« Last post by MerleOne on October 14, 2010, 11:21 AM »
I do like splash a lot, because on my 5-years old PC it plays HD content without hiccups but I miss one simple feature : the ability to close a file !  When I sort some video file in order to delete the already seen, I open them with Splash, then decide to keep it or not.  If I want to delete the current file, I have either to close Splash or to open another file, but then I lose the file selection in explorer.

Thanks for clarifying this.  Currently on PC I am using UltraRecall Pro which I find very powerful (but with a steep learning curve).  I just wished it could be ported on Mac, but it doesn't seem in Kinook's plan.  Too bad !

About Evernote, which is cross-platform (at least Mac-PC), I just worry about the fact that your data is also online (from what I have understood) : is this the case, or can you keep everything locally ?

You may want to try an uneraser such as Easeus Data Recovery, or Recuva.  The chances to recover your files are low, but one never knows.

If you use the Reverse Delta feature, I guess that would be difficult (old version don't exist any longer, just the delta with the last version - or maybe it's incremental).  And it you turn it off, you lose one of OB main feature !
363
I confirm : Alpha ; Beta returns all files having either Alpha or Beta in their filename, not what I wanted !

Also, there may be something missing from the latest pro version (1.74) : there is no way to clear the filters except doing it manually.  I wish clear results would also clear the filter, or another button could be required.

Of course I may have missed something, so please don't hesitate to mention it.
364
Thanks for clarification.

Regarding the 'Alpha' 'Beta' search , I thought alpha;beta was looking for files containing either alpha or beta in their filenames.  Anyway, I'll try it !

I think that this relative lack of flexibility makes it an easier to use software.

In Oops!Backup 3 there is an option to setup a 2nd Backup Drive. I haven't done this so I'm not sure how this works... Reading merleone's post, I guess this means that multiple drives = multiple FULL backups/discrete backups (mail on E:, docs on F: system on G: or something like that)?

No, not actually : the typical use case is the following.  You define the set of folders you want to backup, for instance... My Documents.  This folder and subfolder are saved with the schedule you define onto a first external HDD, including file revisions.  Then, you connect also a second HDD and you synchronize the first HDD onto the second one (both have to be connected).  The first HDD remains the backup HDD, the second HDD is the mirror backup of the backup HDD.  You cannot switch (I guess you might in a future version).

Darwin... I have one question "if you have the time".
Can you backup on 2 different hard drives or create different backup jobs ?  (e.g. : one day I'd plug one ext. hard drive and it would backup to it, the other I'd plug the other one, etc. Or something like that...)

No, not at the moment at least.  There is a single backup job, towards a single destination, *but* you can now replicate the backup'ed files to a secondary destination.  However you may only backup to the first destination.
371
I would think that is what regex expression searches are about, isn't it?

For file content, not for file names I think.
372
About the way searches are specified :

Is there an easy way to look for files that have say 'alpha' and 'beta' in their name.  I would like to locate files having names such as
alpha-20-beta.doc
betaplusalpha.txt
beta.alpha

etc.

General Software Discussion / YATAD (Yet Another Thread About Defragmentation)
« Last post by MerleOne on October 07, 2010, 10:39 AM »
Hi,
I recently upgraded my iolo System Mechanic license from v9.5 to V10.  Amoung the feature there is one called "realignate" files.  It seems to be similar to defragmenters that sort files alphabetically.  Anyone could confirm that ?  Thanks.

I understood that much. ;D What I was asking was when you said you regret you didn't buy the full set, were you talking about the Zen set or the Mandala set?
...

Ok, no problem. The Zen Set, 216 would have been enough.  And I am missing the plastic card in the mini set !   :)
