I also like Whereisit very much (but don´t use any Disc-Cataloger regularly till now ... only sometimes Locate32), especially the appearance, the plugins for different filetypes, the speed, usability and the storing format is very reasonable. Please notice that there is no unicode version! At the moment it´s not as problematically, but unicode is used more and more often and all CD/DVD/HD-Formats support and sometimes use it. Only very very few programs (3-4 I think) support unicode at the moment. One of them is the Broken Cross Disk Manager :) that has flipped totally over to unicode and only one supports utf-8. At the beginning of catalogers Whereisit was far away compared to others and even today only very few have its quality and capabilities.

Now the bad thing  >:(:
Whereisit 3.73 had heavy problems with larger result-lists / databases that have to been loaded at first to memory to be searched. The hardest issues are that the search stopped and the results were shown at about 2/3 before ending the complete search during the last ("*.*"-search) test. After this sometimes an exception appeared that forced Whereisit to quit and even if it seemed to work further, new searches were impossible - only a restart helped. This is only testable with full-versions, because the exceptions only appear with data-amounts higher than the Trial-Version offers. Collections with more than 200 CDs/DVDs should break this barrier from working to issues.

@KenR: Please test Whereisit with about 2-3Mio (file/dir) entries without any plugins activated, searching only for filenames and directories: All special features turned off. Perhaps newer versions don´t suffer from this problem. Repeat the different searches several times - they don´t appear reliable! You can add the same big HD-partitions several times to your database to get this amount of entries.
 :feedback:

Don´t understand this the wrong way: This doesn´t mean, Whereisit is a bad program.

Beside Whereisit there are many many programs with extremely hard issues and I wonder why most of them are commercial ones like Smart CD Catalog Pro 200, Drivescan Plus 2006 3.5b, Analinx Filookup 1.1.120, CD-Rom-Archiv 1.6, CD Bank Cataloguer V2.7.8, AyeahCatalog V1.0, CD Catalog Expert 9, CDCatWin1.01, CD Bank 2.7.6, FileArchivist 5.0, CDTree 2.1.8 std, Disccat 3.0 beta 4, (now some Freeware) MAKara CD Catalog 1.1, NGDiskcat 1.06, Catalog Max 1.66, Gwhere 0.2.3?!!? Is featuritis or laziness the reason? Don´t the developers test their pograms intensively with high and flexible datasets? Perhaps harder problems come up with additional features activated? I haven´t tried this because I was only interested in the maximum search speed during my tests.

So I want to show up that bad behaviour is the norm!!!
I have found only very few one´s that worked in each case perfectly. The rule I discovered was in nearly each case the same: The simplier the program and less the database the more was the probability to work without any problems.

What would you do if a change has been notified? Virus-killers can do this on their own ... or is there any other use for this? How many files/directories must be scanned?

At first... what to hell is LBC? Do you have a link?
What´s the big difference in using the Desktop as a Startup-Area without visible Icons and how do you know that you are within the right area to launch something special? At least you should be able somehow to start programs via Icon.
The Icons show you what application will start - the area not. The launcher would only be senseful for very vew but often used applications.

Yes, I can see the registration without any problems. The key seems to be stored 2 times in the registry. The first is from the registration program-template, the next is the real entry from the installation. Normally the Registration-prog would copy the key after successful internet-contact from the template-info to the orginial info. The template is a very strange UUID-Key: (in my case ... yours could be a different ...) HKEY_LOCAL_USER/S-1-5-21-602162358-1659004503-725345543-1004/Software/Computer Systems/CD MINDMAP4/UserInfo -> Key SN is inside with Name=User & Org=CSO

Getting the Register-Information is very easy:

You don´t have to install the program to get your key. Run Activate.exe. After the Registration you only have to write down the Serial-Number from the key: Software/Computer Systems/CD MINDMAP4/UserInfo/SN. Installing the Program asks for the key. You only have to insert the generated from the Registry to get the program unlocked. I sniffed the key with Altiris SVS.

I have to say: This is really a killer-application. Everything seems to be possible I ever searched for! Get it - as fast as you can!

Living Room / Maniac Mansion Mania
« Last post by Crush on February 25, 2007, 03:53 PM »
One of the greatest games I ever played that led to the world of grafic adventures was Maniac Mansion on my beloved C64  :-* (rest in peace ... until I start CCS64 again  :)).

A few years ago some MM fans started to create http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.de.
Different creators started a game with different seasons each consisting of 10 episodes and even differnt special (Halloween 2005/2006 and others).
All together are about 80-90 parts till now and the developement on new adventures is still going on.
If you want to create new stories on your own, you´ll get a lot of places, animations and gfx at the resources - so you can quickly start the fun!

Of course the stories are extremely different, sometimes with following plots or continued stories connecting on former parts. The grafics are in most cases better than the original games and the stories are sometimes totally crazy. You have to solve mysteries, fight against flesh eating zombies, find killers, explore deep dungeons, fight against the meteor again, escape from edna´s love, attend crazy experiments, manage blind dates and make many many more funny adventures. You play a huge variation of figures like the meteor police, Bernard, tentacles, Ed, Dr. Fred, Britney, Syd, Dave, Sandy, Razor, Inspector Clouso, Hoagie, Jeff, Michael and other new characters at different places, times, parallel-universes and dreams with several sidekicks at other games like Zak Mc Kracken and monkey island. Some of the games are now translated to english: http://www.maniac-ma...ia.de/international/

There´s a really huge Maniac Mansion galaxy to explore (especially if you understand german  :))!

Developer's Corner / Re: Seeking your insightful advice...Where to start?
« Last post by Crush on February 25, 2007, 04:19 AM »
Hi,

I prefer C++ and think you have the widest grade of development in every direction. Object orientation is nowadays standard and most languages should support the most important paradigms. Speed and flexibility has ever been the main thing I was looking for. And till now I insisted in using C++ (before that only Assembler could serve the right velocity). Mastering C++, other languages that are looking C++-like in syntax and have in most cases less complex features could be learned in a few days if needed - but till now there was no need for it (only Fortran in a conversion-project).

During the crazy appearance of all languages there´s one I noticed especially: The D programming language: http://en.wikipedia....programming_language. It´s overloaded with everything I expect in a language of the next century and the speed & syntax is impressive. If it comes up to the coding-scene in the future I could imagine to flip over to D.

Due to problems with lawyers (as I think) the comparison-table of D with C, C#, C++, Java has been reduced to D itself: http://www.digitalma...om/d/comparison.html
... it´s very informative looking at the main differences of the languages - but for what do we have the timemachine  :D : http://web.archive.o...om/d/comparison.html

For speed-comparisons of nearly all existing languages - that could be helpful for your decision - you can take a look here: http://shootout.alio...idigits&lang=all

If you ask a few coders that have specialized in different languages, you´ll hear the same everytime: My language has all I need!
And that´s the point of decision: If the language serves your goals in the way you expect it - it´s right! But only - if you can accept and afford the development and debugging tools existing for it.

The game Anachronox offers the APE programming language that´s for creating games inside the game. There are some APE games made by fans. The problem is: You can only play them inside of Anachronox.  :D

Otherwise for Adventures you could use AGS:http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/

The first part of the link is working: http://www.equi4.com/catfish.html

I´ll check the sourcecode - perhaps the Text-Export could be automated. Before that you also have to know which program´s able to import the datas and what´s the import-format.

17 years ago I had 2 chinchillas that regularly used to bite through all the computer cables of my old trusty Amiga. I must change them each few months.
