The Double Commander is a nice application, but it all depends on what you need.

Generally, all "Commanders" (including the Salamander) are only strong if you copy/move files regularly. That's when the second window can shine.
Also, you should consider to spend money. Paid file managers are (almost) always better than freeware file managers.

I guess I tried most of them by now, having settled to the Total Commander for the time being - until something better appears in my sphere.

I found LibreOffice to be surprisingly unreliable on Windows when I tried it last. Maybe that's a platform thing or directly related to my computer. Modern DTP (Scribus) is one of the less horrible alternatives to LaTeX indeed, although it's arguably not really a writing tool either. :)

What I call the ‘LaTeX fetish’ is the conviction that there is something about LaTeX that makes it good for writing in. As we shall see, arguments in favour of writing in LaTeX are unpersuasive on a rational level: LaTeX is in fact quite bad for writing in (although it could be worse, i.e. it could be TeX). This doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t use LaTeX at all, but it does mean that people probably ought to stop recommending it as a writing tool.

I have just tried it: It works for me.

  • Make sure indent is actually installed and available for your user (because else it will obviously fail).
  • chmod -x /home/youruser/9indent.sh
  • Add it to your toolbar and middle-click it.

edit: My screenshots are made with acme2k because that's what I happen to have on this machine, but it should not matter that much.

Anyway, that was it for me. I have repeatedly said (or rather, written) that Netscape/Mozilla was one of the products which are just less horrible than their competitors.

I silently suffered when they started increasing the version number to match Chrome, then they took my statusbar (later, "add-on bar"), the RSS support, application theming and XUL add-ons, in Germany they even started distributing adware in cooperation with a yellow press publisher. Some time in between they forced me to distribute my add-ons over their shady portal because of mandatory "signing". That "signing" broke my privacy and security over the weekend - and my patience is limited, it always was, it always will be.

When I saw the news, I was on my way to visit friends, so my Friday was rather calm: no Firefox was involved.
The first thing I did when I came back home was:

  • I booted my Windows computer.
  • I uninstalled Firefox.
  • I set up my already installed Vivaldi so that it mostly matches my previous Firefox installation.

On my other "desktop" I already had Pale Moon, so I was fine.

Farewell, Mozilla. This was one middle finger too much for me.

I assume that more and more Chromium-based browsers will get rid of that flag over time. Wait for 2020!

(I had not tested Vivaldi this time. I can confirm that my version - a recent(ish) beta - still has the flag.)

In April 2019, Chrome-based browsers lost their ability to disable hyperlink tracking, resulting in major security/privacy problems.

I wrote a Chrome extension that removes hyperlink trackers right from the HTML code.

I play with some of its parts, currently investigating if it is a good idea to run Plan 9 as my backup server.

There was no Git client for Plan 9 before. Now there is one, and it perfectly fits Plan 9's general concept: Everything is a file system. Even more so than on Unix: Even sockets are a file system - in fact, you can even import a different Plan 9 computer's network stack right into your machine. Admittedly, most of it only makes sense if you have more than one Plan 9 computer.  :D
