Post New Requests Here / Re: Finding the path of a file on your computer
« Last post by mwb1100 on September 01, 2014, 03:43 AM »
Many applications will show you the full path of an opened file with the "File/Properties" menu or similar.  In Word 2010 I get the full path under File/Info.

Anyone ever done a polar bear swim?

I did it many many years ago in Vancouver BC.  No Charities were involved, only liquor stores.

A Cthulhu Ouija Board! Ftaghn! Ia!

Neat!

I'm not generally a superstitious type, but I think I'd be afraid to actually play with the thing.

Somehow, something that wasn’t patentable became patentable just by saying “do it with a computer."

Just got back from filing my patent on Internet porn. Tomorrow I start looking for an island country to purchase.

Getting a real shaving kit is an idea I've been toying with, though my facial hair is so sparse as to be just a level or two above peach fuzz.

As far as extending the life of your blades: when I was a kid you could get a small pyramid that you'd put your razor blades inside in order to keep them sharp through 'pyramid power'.  I imagine that Gillette did something to suppress that technology.  I think you should test it out.

Also, your post reminded me of this SNL parody from the very first show, back in 1975 (starring current US Senator Al Franken as "the Caveman"):

You mean like when a bank forecloses? Yeah, you don't actually own your home until you have finished paying the bank for it, plus interest. In essence, as long as you still have a mortgage, you are renting the house from the bank, who is the real owner.

Except one difference is that the bank can't just say, "we don't want to service this loan anymore so we're foreclosing".  You have to actually not pay them for some period of time before they can kick you out.

Of course, there's the government, who will be wanting you to pay property taxes in perpetuity... or else.

Interested because I can't find one damn editor on Linux that will do what Notepad++ or TextPad will do.

I haven't used it, but someone I work with uses UltraEdit for Linux (UEx) and seems to like it.  My understanding is that now an UltraEdit license allows you to use it for Windows, Mac or Linux, so if you already have an UltraEdit license, you can use UEx (maybe after paying for an upgrade).

General Software Discussion / Re: Ad Muncher 5 will be free

Well... I bought AdGuard for now. HTTPS support seems to be mandatory these days.

Let us know how you like it after you've had a bit of time with it.

Ad Muncher is still working pretty well for me so far, but I'd like to stay informed on possible alternatives should things deteriorate.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android: Looking for true app data backup solution
« Last post by mwb1100 on July 15, 2014, 08:54 AM »
It has a 'donate' button which will charge you $5 from Google Play - the "Offers in-app purchases" you see on the Play store page is probably due to that.

I don't recall running into any required in-app purchase situations.  However, there are several parts of the app I haven't used (ROM management, font installation, boot animation).

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android: Looking for true app data backup solution

ROM Toolbox is a nice collection of what would otherwise be separate utility apps (many of which require the device to be rooted).  Some of the things I use it for:

  - SuperSU
  - busybox
  - root file explorer
  - sqlite3 database editor (comes up when you open a .db file in the explorer)
  - app manager (that lets you 'freeze' apps, so you can disable them without deleting them)

It also has a bunch of utilities to manage ROMs, but I haven't used them yet.  I think it was a very worthwhile purchase.

I did have a recent problem with the sqlite3 editing - it requires that the device have the 'sqlite3' command line program in the path.  Many devices have it because it's part of the Android AOSP build, but some manufacturers remove it because it's not necessary for the normal running of the device.  I used the "SQLite Installer for Root" app to install the utility, and the functionality worked in JRummy's explorer after that.

I submitted a couple bug reports about this problem via JRummy's website (one from when I had the problem and didn't know how to fix it, and another explaining the fix I found), but I never received any kind of reply.  I guess this is an indication that support might be an issue if you find yourself needing it.  We'll see if the next update to ROM Toolbox includes the sqlite3 utility or at least tells you that it's missing instead of giving you a useless error message if you have this problem.

two lots of SFA in reply.

What's "SFA"?

I disagree that this would have a significant impact on the meaning of the document.  Either way, with or without the period after "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness", it's clear that those rights are inherent, that the role of government is to secure those rights, and a government which does not do so is subject to replacement.

I don't read a different meaning with or without the period.  Maybe someone can better explain to me how removing the period would change the interpretation.

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol has a new developer

For most announcements of this sort, I'm skeptical of the future of the software franchise.  However, in this case I completely trust that BillP has handed off WinPatrol to someone who will carry it forward well.

I'm just sorry about the reasons behind the transfer, and I wish Bill and his family well.

Smudged Cat, the developer of "The Adventures of Shuggy" and other games is giving away free Steam keys to the game:

    http://www.smudgedca....com/shuggy_giveaway

You just have to visit the page and you'll get a key code.  No need to give them an email address, a Facebook "like", a Tweet or anything else.

Not sure how long they'll be doing it...

It seems like "flash sales" that last only a few hours are the new rage with game vendors - it's not just GOG.
374
Alan Wake's American Nightmare is the fourth and final free 'flash' sale item today (note it won't become available until about a half hour from when I post this).

I'm not sure how long it'll last, but they've been going for 2 hours, so I expect the same for this.
