Living Room / Re: Open Letter to Skype
« Last post by cmpm on January 26, 2013, 12:39 AM »
So if I use Skype in the UK to communicate with someone in the UK it is subject to the US Patriot Act?

Yes.

Various provisions allowed for the disclosure of electronic communications to law enforcement agencies. Those who operate or own a "protected computer" can give permission for authorities to intercept communications carried out on the machine, thus bypassing the requirements of the Wiretap statute. The definition of a "protected computer" is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 1030(e)(2) and broadly encompasses those computers used in interstate or foreign commerce or communication, including ones located outside the United States.

Dawson's website is still compromised according to this report.

PicPick is annoying with it's constant updates and crapware bundle.
I removed it off my wife's computer, she was annoyed as well.
Plus you have to get it from cnet and no direct download link that I found.

FastStone is better at scrolling windows then SC.
Other then that SC is my standard.

Without reviewing the built-in editors they are all basically the same.

I've had no troubles with SC's built-in editor.
It does what it says, and what I want it to.
FastStone's editor is pretty basic.

Oh, one other thing.
SC is faster at saving shots.
One can grab multiple shots very quick.
Just save in the pop-up dialog and grab another without the editor.

edit again- Just played with FS a bit, it can save quickly too.

Thanks, One thing I like about CleanUp! Is I can run it in demo mode, and it shows what files it would have deleted. And it shows a report in real mode too, but after I have cleaned. This is one thing that TFC lacks is a report of files deleted, like CCleaner.

@Stoic Joker

ATF-Cleaner, do you disable these or leave them disabled?-

Notes for Windows Vista users:

On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As I'm not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista  will have for the time being it I won't enable that function.

Just wondering.

And I do use TFC without any troubles.

I have been using CleanUp! (Gould), but not recommending it.
It's good for custom file and folder locations and temps.

If you are unsure about TFC, do not run it.
I have not had any problems myself, but that is me.

Have you tried CCleaner?
For CCleaner I only use the cleaner, not the registry cleaner.
Also I would uncheck the cleaning of cookies, untill you know how the advanced settings work.

TFC will clean more then Windows Disk Cleanup and CCleaner.
All 3 will pick up what the other does not.

TFC will stop most process' before it cleans and sometimes prompts for a reboot.
Even if it does not prompt for a reboot I always log off and back on again.
You should see better performance for a while till the temps load up again.
If you want to run it, there is no install, it's portable.

crabby3, There is no "SpeedUp" for windows program that works.
Even if it is endorsed by Microsoft.
Don't believe everything you read on the net.

The simple way would be to reinstall windows.
If you don't want to do that, try TFC.
A temporary file cleaner.

http://www.geekstogo...cleaner-by-oldtimer/

Read about what it will clean.
Search the net for info about it.
Ask on sites where you value their opinion.
Then, maybe, download and run it.

i don't see anything in that list that deserves to be covered up and hidden as secret and explained away as: "we have secret reasons that justify expulsion but we're not going to tell you what they are."

That is a good point.

And the fact (if it is true, according to available facts) that Skytech is offering him a job leads me to think 'it' was not very harmful to anyone or any property.

I like Zotero too.
It has a standalone program that syncs with the add-on.

The job offers are starting up now.
He may have fast-tracked his career!

Report says even Skytech is offering.
Hm, I think there will be more info sometime tomorrow.

get out of the coder's chair and spend a little more time down in the system operations center

I can relate to that. It needs to work both ways as well.
Not that you don't see that, 40hz.
I don't think that university sees it like that.

I believe all agree the given punishment is not the right thing to do.

And sheesh, he's a kid, not a genius, I know.
Not aware of these severe consequences, possibly, no matter what he signed.
365
I did not add 'therefore more qualified than they are.
They should be more responsible though.
'Beat the ones with the degrees' was not meant as a contest.
More of a lack of the right words I suppose.
366
Morgan Crockett, director of internal affairs and advocacy for the Dawson Student Union, agrees.

“Dawson has betrayed a brilliant student to protect Skytech management,” said Ms. Crockett. “It’s a travesty that Ahmad’s academic future has been compromised just so that Dawson and Skytech could save face. If they had any sense of decency, they would reinstate Ahmad into [the] computer science [program], refund the financial aid debt he has incurred as a result of his expulsion and offer him a full public apology “

Repeated calls to various members of the Dawson administration were not returned, with the college citing an inability to discuss an individual student’s case on legal and ethical grounds in a statement released by their communications department.

Ruin the kid's education and not even blink about it.

367
I don't think it's about forgiveness and understanding.
A student of computer science beat the ones with the bachelors and masters at what they are supposed to be teaching.
The student is expelled?
368
My best guess is they voted according to keeping their own jobs.
Knowing a little about how administration operates.
369
Ahmed Al-Khabaz, a 20-year-old computer science student at Dawson and a member of the school’s software development club, was working on a mobile app to allow students easier access to their college account when he and a colleague discovered what he describes as “sloppy coding” in the widely used Omnivox software which would allow “anyone with a basic knowledge of computers to gain access to the personal information of any student in the system, including social insurance number, home address and phone number, class schedule, basically all the information the college has on a student.”

Two days later, Mr. Al-Khabaz decided to run a software program called Acunetix, designed to test for vulnerabilities in websites, to ensure that the issues he and Mija had identified had been corrected. A few minutes later, the phone rang in the home he shares with his parents.

Run the Test again, Mr. Al-Khabaz.
the damn fools.....
370
Most universities these days are also hosting critical and sensitive research projects; running important internal programs (accounting & payroll); and frequently leasing out computer resources on contract to local businesses and government agencies along with the expertise to maintain such systems.

If these programs are not separate from student user accounts, then the university and Skytech and Omnivox Consulting are not very smart about much of anything. And have bigger issues that are not solved by expelling a student.

I don't think I would want anything to do with 'kim dotcom'.

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol Plus or AnVir Task Manager?
« Last post by cmpm on January 18, 2013, 12:20 PM »
This is from support for WinPatrol-

ALERT: Windows Updates from Microsoft this week caused many system files to be uninstalled & replaced. WinPatrol users may see multiple alerts about a program being uninstalled. These messages expected & safe.
Just click OK and know that if these were dangerous attacks you'd be protected.

I'm not really sure what all that means. ?

I've had a few quirks, like loosing some startup items myself.
Had to add them back in.

//edit

Just noticed, when I chose "Save Copy As" when making the above image, it selected PCX as the file format and I had to manually select PNG.  Let me fiddle with some options, and failing that, I will inform mouser of the issue.

After selecting .png or another format and actually saving to .png (or another format), the next save will use the former format, .png or whatever you chose the last time.

That's how it has been working for me.

These days, big money are the lawmakers and politicians.
The ones writing laws to spy on the public (private citizens-remember them) and infringe on privacy.
With maybe a few exceptions.

I have a few ideas to fix it, but they won't happen in my lifetime, I think.
Like, no more lobbyists in the capital at all. Keep them local. If any.
Local is where they were voted in.
Anonymous contributions only.
