Living Room / Re: SSD's - How They Work Plus Tips
« Last post by phitsc on May 14, 2013, 03:10 PM »
There was quite a good intro to how SSDs work in Communications of the ACM recently called 'Anatomy of a Solid-State Drive'. While in my memory the article looked nicer (i.e. nicer layout), I think the contents is identical to this one:

I'm starting to share your dislike for Google. The fact that I as a (admittedly non-paying, well, at least not directly paying) customer have no control over availability of service and most importantly the use of my personal data is discomforting me more and more. But that only as an aside.

Concerning advertising: It might sound naive, but wouldn't it be perfect for a site like DC to have permanent related advertisers or sponsors, like magazines or sports associations etc. do? Let's say programming-related tool manufacturers (e.g. Microsoft) or Universities or SW manufacturers (e.g. Adobe). It could also be an interesting place to advertise for smaller companies (let's say the size of XYplorer, etc.). These would just pay a fixed monthly / yearly contribution (donation) to have fixed advertising space. I think DC could be very attractive for such advertisers because of the people frequenting the site. The long outstanding (and planned) site update might also help to convince possible advertisers that they are investing in a modern and evolving site.

I have no experience with any of the tools on your list. Nevertheless, I can give an opinion on one of them:

Cornerstone by zennaware is being co-developed by a former teammate of mine (he's one of the founders and owners of zennaware). I can tell you that he's a very talented and dedicated programmer. I have no doubt that Cornerstone must be an excellent piece of software and well worth its price.

If you haven't done so already, have a look at how it's done in Adobe Lightroom. You can use both keyboard and mouse. You can set a specific value either by entering into the edit box (at the end of the slider), or by clicking on a position on the slider. You can "move" the value both on the slider and the edit box. If these elements would be big enough I'm sure they would work well for touch input. You can re-set to a default position by double-clicking the slider handle. I don't think your multiple "good values" requirement is covered though.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: CZB pack
« Last post by phitsc on April 05, 2013, 03:53 AM »
It's not a bad idea. Maybe the new web site, once put in place, will allow to implement something like that.

Concerning a simpler way to install FARR plugins: have a look at DcUpdater. While it does not support installation of all of the available plugins I guess most of them are there.

-destiny_ruler (April 03, 2013, 08:05 PM)

The typical way this is currently done is by posting a bug report in the respective plugin's thread. When you say 'better', do you have something specific in mind?

They said July 1, 2013. But since today there doesn't seem to be a menu entry for Reader in the google menu bar any more >:( (and it already was under More anyway)

Also, I am the one to blame for Reader's demise. Just this morning, while taking a shower, I thought what would happen if Google killed the service. Well, there you are :(

I suggest you never take a shower again or else they go and shut down Gmail.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: FarrWebMetaSearch 1.6.0
« Last post by phitsc on February 11, 2013, 02:03 AM »
The problem with FarrWebMetaSearch is that it doesn't operate on a Web Site's official API, but instead tries to collect search results by grabbing content directly from a Site's web page (using regular expressions). Unfortunately, a slight change on the side of the provider of the respective Web Site can cause such a regex to not work any more, making the concept of the plugin somewhat flawed.

Which search did you try?

A very cool post. Thanks for sharing.

I honestly disagree with his opinion about VCSs and IDEs though :) (assuming he doesn't mean it ironically).

Concerning the successor to OO: it's not really a successor, rather a new trend: functional programming. Many popular once predominantly OO (or already multi-paradigm) languages now integrate functional programming concepts.

That's an interesting piece of information. Thanks for sharing Curt.

Sounds like Win+... shortcuts can be "overwritten" by an application then. Maybe an API that has changed with Windows 8.

General Software Discussion / Re: Disable Win+V in Windows 8
« Last post by phitsc on January 17, 2013, 02:41 PM »
It's especially annoying since with Windows 8 they now use so many of the Win+SingleLetters, and for stuff which I really don't care about. The fact that applications like Visual Studio and applications with similar complexity have basically used up the whole alphabet for shortcut keys further complicate the matter :(

I just tried with a task having 369 characters and it displayed and worked flawlessly. Can you be more specific in where you see a problem? (maybe make a screenshot)

screenshot
Only 511 characters. Breaks in the middle of a word "przez"

all text: "Asus planuje portfolio smartfonów z systemem Windows Phone 8. Drugim, umieszczenie Windows 8 RT w smartfonie i dodanie do systemu aplikacji umożliwiających wykonywanie połączeń głosowych.

Mayby polish letters - ó, ą, ć, ś, ń generate the errors ??

512 is a "common" buffer size in computer programs (2^9). It might be a FARR limitation. I'll check tomorrow (or ask mouser).

Changing the date of a task does not work. Clears the date completely.

If you mean changing a task's due date: I just tried that and it worked. Can you be more specific in what you're doing exactly (an example maybe)?

OK. It all depends on how I write the date. Previously, I wrote, "31 stycznia 2013" (polish 31 January 2013). Like on RTM website. When I wrote "31-01-2013" - it works. What formats does it work?

FarrMilk uses the computers locale settings to parse dates. So if your computer's locale is set to polish and "31 stycznia 2013" is how you'd write a date in Poland then what you're trying to do should work, i.e. if it doesn't work it's a bug in FarrMilk.

General Software Discussion / Disable Win+V in Windows 8
« Last post by phitsc on January 17, 2013, 04:06 AM »
I've been using Win+V to activate Paste in ClipX. Unfortunately, with Windows 8 Win+V is used for something else (by Windows itself). But since it's something I don't need, I'd rather disable the functionality for Windows and keep using it for ClipX. Anyone knows if this is possible and how to do it?
