Living Room / what is the benefit of this old style network
« Last post by techidave on April 23, 2011, 09:59 PM »
I was at a friend's place of business today and noticed this about his network of 3 computers running XP.  Each computer had 2 nics in it.  One is for the internet and one is for the local network.  he doesn't know why it was done this way nor does he really care since he isn't into computers.  Looks like all cabling is Cat 5.  One of the computers acts as a server.

So my question is:  Why would this have been done this way in the first place?  What benefit could it have given over any other style?  I call it old style but maybe it isn't??

Living Room / Re: Easiest laptop (brand) to take apart ?
« Last post by techidave on April 23, 2011, 01:40 PM »
I have taken apart a few Dell, Acer, HP, Gateway, Lenovo's.  It seems like the Gateway and Lenovo was just under the keyboard with no covers in the way.  But it has been a while.

Macbooks are hard in my opinion.  Acers have very few manuals online to help you figure it out.

Just downloaded and installed today on my laptop.  I read where Yahoo doesn't update any oftener than one hour.  I noticed if I do a manual refresh by right clicking the tray icon, it still doesn't update.

is this by design?

General Software Discussion / What Blackberry apps do you use?
« Last post by techidave on March 31, 2011, 09:15 PM »
not to be out done by the android thread, how about listing your favorite BB apps here!  I am a new user to a "smart phone", and only have a few on mine.

1.  Vlingo (installed it but haven't tried it)
2.  Google Mobile App ( only used it a little.
3.  Facebook Mobile

I would llike to find a good, free wifi locator.

Yes, I used vmware player to install windows 98.  went without a hitch!
358
actually the newer vmware player can create virtual machines.  The following is taken from the vmware player faq page:

What is VMware Player?

VMware Player is software that enables users to easily create and run virtual machines on a Windows or Linux PC. VMware Player now creates virtual machines in addition to running virtual machines created by VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, VMware Server, or VMware ESX and supports Microsoft virtual machines and Symantec LiveState Recovery disk formats.

General Software Discussion / shutdown and startup manger recommendations
« Last post by techidave on March 23, 2011, 04:54 PM »
I am looking for a very simple program and wondered what others had found useful.

I need something to shut off a pc at a pre-determined time, say 5 pm on weekdays only.

and then turn it back on at 7:30 am on week day s only.

nothing else, just that on a Windows pc, in this case, XP Pro.

I know that some BIOS can do this but not on this particular machine.

Thanks!

maybe a coding snack???

Curt, are you referring to the "Flash Downloader 2.0.21"?  that is available as a firefox add on.

perhaps a backup and restore feature would be good.

Not to mention that many USB device installs have the "Don't insert cable until installer tells you to" warning because the device isn't capable of finding its own ass without a map.

Long ago when I lived in Canada, there were gas stations that had hybrid fuels for cars that contained, I believe, ethanol. I've not seen anything like them since.

I cannot speak for all of the USA but here in central US, our fuel is 10% Ethanol.  And regular cars, small engines, they all use it.

I am attaching a screenshot taken from our local farmers coop showing fuel (and some other) prices for your enjoyment.   ;D

all the laptops that I have ever used have a sensitivity setting that is supposed to "help" with this problem.  Sometimes getting it adjusted correctly can be an issue though.  Especially if there is multiple users.

No special purpose Ath.  Just did it for kicks more than anything else.  Probably won't use much at all if any.  I don't think I had done a windows 98 install for about 5 years, so it was good experience

I hadn't seen a picture of Win 1 or 2 either.  I started out with windows 3.0 and DOS 5.  At work we actually had DOS 3.3 installed with no windows.

I remember the entertainment pack, it had some good games on it.  I am talking about solitaire and a few other games.  these were the ones that were on win update site.  they were an optional download off of there.  I don't think Microsoft made them though.  I have downloaded this many times as my win98 cd didn't have it on there.

Its not that I have to have them cause I probably won't play it anyway (not a gamer).  Just trying to get it original as I can.

I am looking for the games that came with windows 98.  As I recall, they were also available on the windows update site but that place for 98 is unavailable.  Are there any other places to find it?

I recently setup a virtual 98 and am wanting to find the games.

Timns Apps / Re: timns Friendly Password Generator
« Last post by techidave on March 09, 2011, 09:49 PM »
I have looked at several of these over the years thinking I would use them in our school.  But the lack of making them "easy" to remember wasn't attractive to me.  After looking at yours program using say lower case, no numbers or special punctuations, and 4 characters long with the memorability checked made it a winner in my eyes.

I don't need it (for me) to create thousands of passwords at a time as we are only 140 students K-12.

I typically would work by grade level on something like this at one time so for me and only me, 25 different passwords would be awesome!

Your pretty fast on the draw your self!

Looks pretty good timns.  does it or can it have the ability to create more than one password at a time?  I like the options, such as for memorabilty.

I don't remember any other generators having that but I am sure someone will prove otherwise.   :)

I just stumbled on to this add on for Firefox: Readability.  I just installed it but looks very interesting and it strips away all the junk on the sides.

From their website

Readability :: Add-ons for Firefox

Readability is a new Firefox add-on that makes reading web pages simpler and more enjoyable. The system strips the superfluous information and shows the main content in a single column of easy-to-read text. It is also a precious tool for printing the web pages in less.

It had some issues that I couldn't figure out so we went out and bought Parallels for Macs and the problems ended.

What were the issues?

The biggest issue was a black screen when using windows powerpoint through a projector.   I checked the virtualbox forums but there was no help.  It seems like other were having this issue (as I remember).  There was a few "fixes" but they didn't work, but don't remember what I tried now.

we had used parallels previously when our macbook was running 10.4 (Tiger), and it was a good experience for us.

Well, XP as the native OS wasn't my first choice, its just that I cannot afford win7 just yet, so I thought I could get a head start on things by installing xp first.

maybe I could go ahead and install xp virtually and then I would have that done already.  Then all I would have to do is load win7 (native) when I get it, then copy my xp file over and I am done!   :)
