General Software Discussion / Re: program which lists new google page hits
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 02:58 PM »
hi robert,
i'm not sure exactly what your post is telling us.. can you explain more?

ps.
i've thought a lot about this project and i want to do it; ive worked out some details but i can't begin coding it because i have other programs on the site that need attention first (Clipboard Help+Spell for one!)

but i'd like to work with someone else on this - helping out.
after some real thought i think it needs to be written mostly in a scripting language like Python (ruby, perl, php, dylan, etc. would be other possibilities, but i'd prefer python).

if there is a programmer (amateur is ok) who wants to embark on a project, and either knows or wants to learn python, and would like some guidance, and has some real dedication, please contact me about teaming up on this. i think we could make something fun.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capturing Right-Click Menus
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 01:21 PM »
it's probably the ctrl key closing the menu -
set a custom hotkey to capture active window and it should work.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capturing Right-Click Menus
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 12:52 PM »
what version of screenshot captor and what os are you using?

i dont have any problems capturing screenshots with right click context menu, but there was a change sometime last week or so that may have made this not work in previous versions.

i assume also you are capturing entire screen with hotkey, and not trying to initiate a screenshot capture by clicking on tray menu which would obviously close the context menu.

is what's happening on your machine that the screenshot gets taken but the context menu is mysteriously invisible?
that def. sounds like your problem is an older version of screenshot captor.

try the latest version (2.1.1) , available on release page

this is a heads up -
sometime over the weekend i'm going to be updating most of the html code on the site - i expect it will be an hour or three of strangeness as i get it all done.

thanks that looks promissing, going to give it a try.

Living Room / Re: Partitioning hard drive - any point?
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 09:44 AM »
drive imaging software often only works at partition level - one reason to partition is to separate dif drives for imaging.

anyone know a program that could be used (ideally in batch mode on a bunch of files),
to merge inline html css styles into an existing .css stylesheet, or vice versa?

to be clearer:
i have a bunch of html pages, which reference css styles in an external .css stylesheet.

but some of the .html files also have embedded styles.
i'd like a tool that would automatically move the UNIQUE styles found embedded in html files into the css stylesheet.
(would need to rename styles etc. to avoid name conflicts).

id also love some kind of css checker that identified how many times each style was used in a set of html files..

any such tools exist?

Living Room / Having 2 monitors - will change your life
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 06:53 AM »
I don't know why I haven't posted this before.

I know people often yearn for faster cpus, more memory, bigger hard drives, etc.

Nothing has even come close to the increase in enjoyment and efficiency in working with a computer for me than having 2 monitors instead of 1.

Windows handles two monitors perfectly, and it requires no special setup, other than having a video card which can handle it (ati and nvidia have best drivers for it).

If you only have 1 monitor, and you're looking to improve your computer experience, i can't recommend more highly setting up a dual monitor system.  Nothing comes close to it in my mind and i'd rather lose my right arm than go back to a single monitor.

This is even doubly true for anyone who programs, or has certain programs that they tend to run minimized to save desktop space (you can simply leave it running on one screen while you do work on the other).

i'd put it differently.

if you use and love irc, you most likely want a dedicated irc client.  mirc is a great one.
(see the donationcoder.com encryption addon for mirc here: https://www.donation...cryption/index.shtml)
(see the donationcoder.com mirc script pack here: https://www.donation...r/mircpak/index.html)

But if you ever want to talk to others occasionally who ask you "do you have such-and-stuff instant messenger", then a nice multi-protocol free lightweight messenger tool like miranda is a good solution

just checking the nice wiredplane website - wirekeys also supports some nice plugins and has an sdk for writing them.

they also offer free registration if you help them translate and they have some freeware tools too.

Here are some more comments from Andre from his web site:

"using the program will cost you no money, but a nice picture postcard from your hometown or a beautiful countryside nearby (perhaps it will also be possible to use a nice stamp for sending the postcard). "

http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/eac5.html

IMPORTANT:
one of the best things we could ever do at donationcoder.com is help to encourage a community where we show appreciation to freeware/donationware developers.  it is so important that we all go that extra step and not be lazy and take the time to tell freeware/opensource/donationware authors that we appreciate what they are doing.

so if you use exact audio copy, send andre a postcard or email and let him know you appreciate what he is doing!!!!  Emails of thanks from users really do make a difference - they really do make an author feel good about what he/she is doing.  It's not a meaningless gesture, it really does make a difference.  A postcard can make someone's day.

wouldn't it be amazing if it came to be known that people who frequent donationcoder.com were some of the most active supporters of good software, that we not only appreciate the quality of a program, but the quality and kindness and care of the authors of these programs, and not just acknowledged such programs, but took the time to show our appreciation, in whatever form we can, whether its emails of support, postcards, donations, writing short reviews on software announcement sites, etc?

I think we should really explore this idea more, the idea of having a kind of code/philosophy of supporting good authors.
Maybe some set of ideas we can all agree on and try to live up to, that would involve supporting companies who are doing good stuff in a kind and generous way.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Find+Run Plugin System Idea
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 03:01 AM »
a number of ideas have been suggested for F+R that point towards the value of having a plugin system.

so let me lay out my current thinking on this so that we can discuss.

i'm thinking of adding a plugin system that would support 2 kinds of plugins.

1) Standard Result Output Plugin:
this would be a plugin that would be able to inject its own scored results into the standard result list.
it would be useful for doing things like searching opera/firefox bookmarks, etc.
anything where you want to generate a list of scored results by doing a search on keywords.  results in this case could be (but wouldn't have to be) interspersed with results from other plugins and default search.

2) Custom Output Plugin:
in this case, the plugin would trigger on a regular expression or keyword and would get exclusive access to the output window, where it could display ANYTHING it wanted in there, including graphics, etc.  this would be ideal for something like the calculator idea posted previously, or maybe a local dictionary search system, etc.

opinions, ideas, suggestions?

i don't see it, could you explain what exactly you are talking about?

ps.
i have been writing some nice flexible php code to handle the display of any ads, so it will be very easy to occasionally show our own custom images instead of ads sometimes.

i was actually thinking we should pick out our favorite freewares and freeware sites that don't get the attention they deserve and make some of our own "ads" for them to be added randomly to the mix.

Find And Run Robot / Re: ActiveWords and Find&Run Robot
« Last post by mouser on October 14, 2005, 12:22 AM »
another thing that i think will be useful is i'm going to make some demo movies soon, demonstrating various functions of F+R.
i think that may help show people how F+R can be used in ways that are hard to intuit from the program itself.

Find And Run Robot / Re: ActiveWords and Find&Run Robot

i agree with your 10minutes comment, and these are helpful impressions.

different programs suit different people and there is no shame in not being the best program for every person or every way of working..

one thing that your comments and comments by others have made clear is that F+R does need to improve the ease in how users can create group aliases, and make is clearer how to create them, since F+R does indeed have a similar ability to let users define not just wordbases to do things like launch websites and paste text, but to organize these as menus if desired, and use more complicated regular expressions to extract information from what you type.  it sounds more complicated than it needs to be, and i clearly need to do a better job of explaining this feature and making it easier to use.  as has been said elsewhere i think having a whole bunch of aliases installed by default with the next release will make a big difference.

the activewords scripting language looks interesting, i'm going to have a look at it.  i think perhaps if F+R goes in this kind of direction it wouldn't use its own scripting language but would offer the ability for coders to write plugn .dlls which can receive text typed and generate their own results in the output window... definitely something worth considering.

the one thing that F+R probably will not mimic in ActiveWords is the constant monitoring of the keyboard and recognizing keywords there.. i can definitely see how one would get used to that but i'm pretty committed to the idea of hitting a hotkey to bring up the F+R window and only then interacting with the user, for various reasons including cpu use etc.

in addition to commands, F+R is also designed to make it easy for you to GROUP programs or files into what act as menus.

so for example if you have 10 games on your computer that you play, you can just put these 10 games into an alias group named "games", now when you type in "games" you get a list of your 10 games in the results window; just type the # to launch the game you want.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Another related app : Mayk
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2005, 01:00 PM »
2 things:

1)
the file search code in F+R is clean fast c++ code;

but there are no doubt inefficiencies that are now in there doing things like resolving shortcuts and grabbing icons, and storing long+short versions of filenames, etc.

and i understand that  F+R needs to be as fast as it can be; so i promise that once we get some of the additional search functionality that is pending which will allow better searching for multiple words etc, that i will go back through code and really spend some time making it as fast as it can possibly be.  so fear not, F+R will take a back seat to no app in terms of speed.

2) i don't understand the 4 second for each letterpress comment.  it takes 4 seconds for what to happen?

--

color coding is an interesting idea..

also remember: after you launch a file once, it is stored in the fast launch history for super fast location next time - so only the first time you search for a particular file should take any time at all!

yeah frr does some resolving of icons and shortcuts - i probably should do a round of optimization and make sure that im not retrieving information that i don't need to be doing (ie no need to resolve shortcuts or get icons unless they are displayed in the results view).  no reason f+r should do more file operation than is absolutely nesc.  after we get some more core features done ill go through the code an optimize everything.
34948
i actually like miranda's minimalistic default interface (though nice screenshots!)

as brotherS says, feel free to test it out by joining us in the official irc #donationcoder channel on efnet irc.

i forget who suggested this feature (kfitting was it you?) but you might want to check that you have these checked in options if youd like to be able to launch command aliases faster once they are displayed.

also note for things like dictionary search, etc.  you can configure F+R to make it easier to launch multiple results, so that when you hold control while you mouse double click or press a number, it launches but stays open.
