He swears that the amount of data recovered was much more than the actual capacity of the hard disk.

Hey!  I started with 1TB and now I'm down to 40GB.  Tell your friend that I want my data back!

Well, since you ask about rooms for improvement...

The best line-oriented editor for PCs is probably Kedit for Windows, an emulation of IBM's XEDIT mainframe editing environment. It's not likely to be anyone's only editor, but it provides capabilities unmatched by any other that I know of.

+!  for Kedit

change the pin for clicked user to green.

That seems a good idea!

I think he deserves a DC award?

Nincompoop of the year still up for grabs?

[it's going to be hard to top that one

To try would make me goggle-eyed.

I don't need a webcam to accomplish this. I can control the mouse perfectly well by pushing it with my nose. The tricky bit comes in trying to watch both monitors while doing so.

A happy ending nonetheless...

I'm not sure I believe this... I think they're trying to fiddle.

Thanks for the link 40hz

Like many others I dip into Linux every now and again.

I *have* to use Windows for a few things and so cannot find the motivation to run a second OS.
What I have satisfies what I need and I can't make a complete break.
My days of tinkering just for the heck of it are more or less over (been there, done that).

That said, I'll be interested to read the article.  Thanks again for the post :)

I always appreciate having developers participating in our discussions.

Indeed, it's great when they do.  And I very much appreciate developers' posts.

I hope both will continue to participate, constructively.

May I advance a personal point of view?

While watching a little of your bickering might be entertaining, I do wish, now, that both of you would squabble somewhere else.

I, for one, am perfectly capable of looking at two pieces of software and forming my own opinions.
Perhaps I am alone in this view but, then again, perhaps not.

It doesn't matter to me who began this but I'd certainly appreciate a tie if you'd both drop it at the same time.

All the best to you both for 2009!

First, huh?
I still haven't pressed that damned suit!

The W-5 Arrowbile, designed in 1936, was called a "hybrid flying auto." On roads, the all-metal, three-wheeled Arrowbile could travel up to 70 mph; and in the air, 120 mph. Because it had three wheels and a single headlight, the DMV actually classified it as a motorcycle. The Arrowbile was quite easy to operate, as demonstrated by the fact that a businessman with only 35 hours' flight experience flew one from Washington, D.C. in his business suit.

Chris - is it connected to the internet...? I take it that the answer is "no".

[gof]
No, it simply exists in it's own little world.
More and more I realize that the internet now is both the biggest convenience and the biggest curse on the planet.

This thread is another painful reminder of the prodigious amounts of money and time wasted on trying to make our machines safe.

Off topic a bit here (surprise!)

Please put aside your initial reactions of "Good heavens, are you mad/what about...?/haven't you considered...?"

I have just set up a machine that is to be used for a limited set of business purposes only.
It has no need to be connect to another machine in any way.
It just sits there, isolated, doing its job.
None of its capacity is wasted on trying to protect itself.
What a relief it is to deal with something so simple.

Those Luddites had something!

How much do I have to pay to avoid receiving a stand-alone version of you three playing Xmas bored games?

Sorry for the self-promotion, but it was the first thing that sprung to mind

My first thought, too.  I find it extremely useful.

FWIW I'd never want to be in the situation where any issuer could prove that I'd voluntarily handed out my card details.
I'd try my utmost to find another way round what justice wants to achieve.

Living Room / Re: ASUS eee PC - Any owner?
« Last post by cranioscopical on January 08, 2009, 01:14 PM »
Just bought someone an ASUS 1000HA
It has XP on it, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, 10" Screen
3 USB ports and external monitor support.
I expected it to be rather slow and under-performing (but okay for the recipient who is an XP user).

I'm impressed. It's snappy.  XP runs on it just fine, thank you.
Plenty of free HD space.  Runs 'grown-up', graphical office software.
I might not want to try too many games on it :)

It's a whole lot closer to a real laptop that I'd expected.
FWIW, the recipient is a world-class typist and hit 140+ wpm on the cut-down keyboard within half an hour of setting up the machine. I mention this because so many other, smaller devices seem to be a triumph of form over function.

I'm perversely tempted to buy another for myself, just because it's a neat little machine.
Were I to do so, I'd probably wait for the new tablet version(s) to appear in local stores.

#7 British politicians going mad now - I thought there was a recession - of course this would create a few nice jobs, for some people .... but I'm surprised they think it's even worth while
- idly wondering how much corruption there might be involved in such a big project

U.K. gov. "loses" critical data about 3 times a week as far as I can tell.
Cut out corruption, cut out the middle-man, sell the data directly to every malcontent on the planet.

U.K. has gone totally nuts.
Privatize... private eyes... public eyes... public cries.
