General Software Discussion / Re: text file editor personalyzable

I doubt you can program the background color line by line, but looking at vim you can do pretty much anything with the text.  It's a totally programmable scripting editor.  It may take time to adapt to the syntax, but once comfortable with it I don't think you would need all these external tools. Plus there are scripts around for it already debugged.  Not bad for freeware.

I've been called a major pain, even though I've never been in the military.

I always liked Leo LaPorte.  I found out recently by watching The Tech Guy that he dabbled in programming, including assembler.  In any case, I've never owned a phone with a camera or a flat screen TV.  I guess his tech discussions are sort of like geek window shopping.  I hear about all the smart phones and other gadgets I can't afford.  But his show looks good on my Laptop at least.  :)

IainB is a minor deity!

;)

Hmmm, if it was me, I'd take major offense to being called a minor deity.

Miles, I've been using Findbar Tweak for a few months now & while it took a little getting used to I have come to rely on it & I love having all the instances of the term I'm searching for 'marked' in the vertical scroll bar area of the window.

There have been reports of some funky side-effects, but I must not do anything too weird or strenuous with my searches as I  haven't noticed any side-effects at all with my usage.

I think chrome does that by default.  The hit hash marks. So far I like it.  One thing I hated in the vanilla find bar was lack on hit indicator.  The word would not be in Red so I knew I had a hit.. but still had to hunt for it or keep clicking up/down until I could see it.  This is much nicer.

@Shades a well thought out strategy.  That's the type of setup a consultant should create for clients.

@cranioscopical wish I had some of those. I never saw a HD R & R on a PS/2 but one time the IT guy came by to replace the 3 1/2" floppy.  I was envious as it was a zero tools operation.  The dude held down a spring latch while pulling the drive out and just slid the new one in.  I think total time to replace the drive was 10 seconds max.  (It took that long because he was gossiping with me at the time.)

Not sure if I like it.  But one thing different, if you search and highlight all, you can go to a different tab.  Do different searches.  Close the find bar.  When you coma back to the tab the highlights are still there and you can F3 down them.  By default it targets in like when you have your mouse set to target the pointer when you release the control key.  That was disconcerting.  But it's easily disabled.  It has some nice features.  Only time will tell if it has funky side-effects.

I don't know how helpful Findbar Tweak is.  But it looks interesting.  I'm going to try it.

Happy New Year everyone.  Let's hope with no '13' on the end, this year is luckier than the last one.

I haven't tried Clone as restore myself.  But Macrium Reflect claims this allows restoring to a HD with different capacity.  I guess with SSD poplarity there's incentive now to be able to take images of large "spinners" where the used space is within the capacity of the SSD and clone onto the SSD or smaller conventional HD.

It is tough with copy protection as the software publisher is not going to detail the schemes used.  You are kind of stuck with not knowing until you have to try it under pressure.

It does seem like this problem should have been solved a long time ago.  I don't know enough about mini-computers to know if business has an easier time of it.  The most novel approach recommended to me was by a system builder on another forum.  He's a docking station enthusiast.  He does your basic backup imaging(I think he uses Macrium.)  But periodically he puts an internal drrive that is identical make/model/size to the system drive in his PC, in a docking station and restores the image of his working system to that drive.  He stores the drive away.  Now if he has a drive failure he opens the box, replaces the HD, and boots to a working system.

Of course if there's nothing wrong with the boot drive physically, then he just does an image restore from the drive in the dock, booting the Macrium rescue disk from USB or whatever.

For myself I wish there was an easier way to slipstream the OS and applications you know for sure you will install, esp. if they have a copy protection.  So you would boot a DVD and install the OS along with your basic slew of applications, in one shot.  This would be an alternative to putting things back the way they were using an image.  Like if you wanted to get back to an uncluttered system or something.

But if someone maintains mini-computers I'm curious what they do. My older brother used to work at DEC and I know they did tape backups every day.  In fact one of his jobs was to go on customer sites and calibrate their tape drives.  But I didn't really get all the details.

btw anyone know how to specify an FTP port other than default for SyncPlaces? Right now I'm syncing to local .json file.  But it would be cool to use ftp. I don't see anywhere to put a port number in any of the forms.

i love that Groucho quote, i use it all the time!

When I was a kid he had a game show, You Bet Your Life. I was too young to appreciate it.  But now and then a cable channel that does the old 50s shows would put that show on for a bit.  I would get a kick out of contestants who really didn't know what Groucho was about.  One guy was a salesman and he mentioned his membership in a country club.  So Groucho does the line.  The guy tries to impress on Groucho that what he said didn't make sense.  So Groucho looks at the audience like "where'd they dig up this guy?" and says something to the effect "I've been using that line for 30 years.  I think I know what's in it."

Needless to say the Wink Martindales of the game show universe can't hold a candle to the first guys like Groucho and Carson.  :)

Ahhhh, just a second.  It will come to me.

I'm sure you could find a stand-alone nawk.exe someplace.  Also when you say "maintain" I'm not sure what you mean.  If you copy lines to another file do you keep the old file to preserve the line count?  Replace lines in the original file with new line char(s)(empty line?)  Or just take the data and run?  It's kind of vague other than that you want the lines depending on line number in the file.

Heh there's room for a satire fiction story:
"Lifetime License!!"

(Cue dramatic music)
Punchline: The company hires assassins to kill the customers!  :P

Or the cliche where the evil computer does them in.  Like if you turn off Windows Updates the programmable thermostat gets a short at 4:00 AM and burns the house down.  :)

I found this suggested fix on this link

Try This:

Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dell Computer Corporation\QuickSet\QuickSetControl and set it to 1 and reboot.

Facebook 'dead and buried'
“What we’ve learned from working with 16-18 year olds in the UK is that Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried.”

Gee, does that mean all the 'like us on Facebook' pop-ups will finally start to go away?

If there were "don't like" buttons it would likely amount to a DOS attack.  :)

Before the subscription scheme I seem to remember a lot of licenses were for free updates within the major version number.  Like when I bought WinZip I could get all the updates to 6.x via download.  But to get to 7.x they offered a discount.  So the burn was buying just before a major version change.

A bit over-simplified of an explanation, but rest assured that Microsoft was not receiving 'phone calls' from your PC.

All I know is, if they start calling collect there will be hell to pay.   >:(
