Living Room / Re: BitTorrent - why bother?
« Last post by nudone on March 27, 2006, 01:04 AM »
i'm in the UK, Carol, and i know that bandwidth download traffic shaping is used or is certainly going to be used by some of the the isp's. my provider 'freeonline' has been getting ready for it for quite a while with many convoluted strategies on how they will finally implement it (it seems 4pm to midnight are going to be the monitored hours). it may be worth checking what your provider is doing or is planning to do (they won't be monitoring all download traffic, just peer2peer, newsgroup, things like that).

you may like to try utorrent http://www.utorrent.com/ i gave up with azureus. utorrent pretty much worked straight out of the bag for me - haven't even looked at my router settings.

nice games.

fantastic. many thanks to superboyac - for getting a discount and for introducing us to MLO.

er, any news of whether there will be a discount for 'mylife organized' in april.

i was just about to buy it and suddenly thought i better check back here first.

i had a go with the free 'todolist' app that was mentioned in another post but it doesn't really have the right options that MLO has.

Living Room / bookmarks within an audio file
« Last post by nudone on March 25, 2006, 01:02 PM »
i remember chatting about this a while back and unless i'm going crazy i'm sure mouser wanted something similar (i can't find the post anymore when i search).

'amorak' will allow you to add 'bookmarks' to a track whilst you are listening to it in winamp (i can't say if it works with anything else).

so, if you want to add placemarkers to your audio books or long mp3s (i need it for things like old tangerine dream tracks so i can get straight to the decent bits) then use 'amorak'.

i would have liked it to be able to halt a track at the bit i don't want to listen to but you can't have everything.

here's the link http://www.winamp.co...details.php?id=22630

excellent reading.

i just wonder how such people make it through a complete day without running into a fatal accident. seems like an absolute miracle that they make it into maturity and reproduce.

oh dear. doesn't sound good.

i've not used that camera with it. 10 and 20d have been fine.

which canon camera are you using, Carol?

i've not encountered any problems but it may be that i've just not spent as many hours with it as you have.

one thing is definite: acdsee used to be a bit 'crashy' on my old system (amd xp2200, 1.5 gig ram) but i can't remember it crashing on my current system (amd xp 4800x2, 2 gig ram).

i was on the verge of buying the pro version of 'mylife organized' with the hope that it would help me do exactly what it said in the title. i think i'll give 'todolist' a go first - looks like it might be just right for the job. thanks for mentioning it, dB.

Living Room / Re: How long will it take you to adopt Windows Vista as your OS?
« Last post by nudone on March 19, 2006, 01:43 AM »
point taken about windowblinds, darwin. i wonder how common it is to install these kinds of programs only to remove them when the novelty is gone. windows classic stays on my machine for 350 days of the year it seems. i don't think any skinning program will ever fully satisfy me as they seem to have glitches here and there - i need gui perfection - and so, there is only the 'classic' look that works 100%. i was just hoping that vista's theme would be just as perfect, i.e. every single button, scroll bar, menu, etc, etc. would be perfectly positioned and clean, regardless of the program windows in view. time will tell.

does anyone know if vista will also have the 'classic' look available?

well, i've certainly had to eat humble pie in the past when saying these sorts of clips look fake. hard to say these days what's real.

i'll go with the flow and accept it as genuine. so, that's an incredible landing.

looks edited to me - i don't think the rider would be too happy to take that impact. but then i guess the movement of the van would absorb some of the force. it still would be a terrible landing to try and make (?). i'm just sceptical as we all know how these things can be done with adobe after effects, etc.

if it is real then i salute the rider.

change can be hard. i know i used to tell everyone how rubbish xp was when it arrived and how fantastic 98 and 2000 were - i thought it was rubbish because when i first installed xp there was a driver problem so i gave up and didn't look at it again for a few months.

i felt like a complete idiot when i finally gave xp another go. it was/is the best operating system i've used so far. okay, so you need the right machine to put it on.

when will i buy vista? not on the day of release but within the first few months - just enough time for driver issues to be sorted. i wouldn't be too surprised if there is a work around for the drm issues (or crack).

i'm happy enough with xp to be honest but i want that 'black' gui that vista has. pathetic reason i know.

if you allow acdsee to show 'all' files (turn off the filter) you can use it to add notes to any file you like (i don't think there is a limit character either???) - then use acdsee like a 'file manager/explorer', with 'thumbs + details' mode turned on. it has all the virtual folder type things and there's no reason why you have to stick to just 'rating' and adding 'keynotes' to image files. now that i think about it, these features could be quite useful though it would have to be well maintained.

some of the other features of 'file notes organizer' do look nice.

not had a chance to put it to the test yet but it sounds like a brilliant idea to me.
