If you read my previous post on the my initial feelings about wiki you know i was not happy with it.

I've recently installed Drupal, and even without any fancy configuration I am loving it:

I think it's likely we will remove the wiki and do all collaborative work through the Drupal pages.

I will try to set up an automatic registration for forum members so users don't have to sign up twice.

I'm also looking into the possibility of using a drupal-based feature request/bug report system, instead of the mantis standalone system we are using.



EDIT:
As you will read in this thread we have since decided not to go with drupal, and have actually settled on using MediaWiki, despite all of it's flaws.

i'm going to try drupal, that might match better my expectations.

[edit] drupal is suiting my tastes a lot better - i think we may use this for collaborative writing instead of wiki.

i've been reading more and more about configuring mediawiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki)

one of the most well respected wiki software.

and i'm having one overriding general impression: i'm really not feeling love for it at all.  in fact i'm feeling what could probably be termed strong dislike and disrespect.

the central concept of a wiki, that you have content that people can collaboratively easily edit, is one i whole heartedly endorse.  but looking at the pathetic level of user control and organization of mediawiki, which people seem to think is the bees knees has left me nonplussed.

just two example from the disorganized wikimedia "manual" pages:

Revoking user's privileges
In its current development stage, MediaWiki has a web-based interface to create users and make sysops and bureaucrats, but it has no interface for revoking privileges.
Currently, the only way to downgrade user's privileges is through SQL:
update user set user_rights='' where user_name='yourusername';
Version 1.4 Mediawiki:
UPDATE user_rights SET ur_rights="" WHERE ur_user=1;
or using Program phpMyAdmin read a textfile into the "TINYBLOB" ur_rights of table user_rights that contains the proper user-entries "sysop,bureaucrat,developer"

permissions are actually a hell of a lot worse than that, but that's just a flavor of how nonexistent any facilities for managing users are.

and this is the official software for wikipedia?!? holy christ that's not good.

i spent many hours customizing the mediawiki "skin" to fit into donationcoder (www.donationcoder.com/wiki) but don't get too used to it, i think there's a very good change i may uninstall mediawiki.

it's just a total mess as far as i can see.

let me recap - i love the idea of collaborative editing of content, but for the love of god it's not that hard to imagine that you are going to need to be able to do some minimal amount of permission management, even if its just to restrict the editing of certain areas to certain groups.  apparently wikis are suffering from huge amounts of spam lately and part of the problem is no one anticipated this or decided that it might be useful to have some moderation over content..  who are these people coding this stuff?

am i a wiki hater?

agree about spelling:
the official spelling of the name is "Screenshot Captor"
and this is the one i used.  quickstart icon i better check into - i generall avoid spaces in install directories but the quickstart icon doesn't qualify for this.  only problem is once i make a mistake naming something in installer its hard to change without people getting duplicate entries.

I still don't know exactly how we're going to use this, but feel free to play around with it in the meantime.

We discussed the possibility of doing group collaboration on reviews using the wiki.

Maybe there's someone with some wiki experience who can clue us in to some of the stuff we might consider?

This will soon become the official way of submitting bug reports and feature requests for all software on DonationCoder.com.

Such a system should make it much easier to keep track of requests and bugs and insure that none are overlooked.

We will probably be doing some tweaking of that section in the upcoming weeks; software is the Open Source Mantis system.

a new version of process tamer will be out this month and i hope to investigate this more before then.

if someone could find a program or two for me that pt can't tame that i could run during testing, that would help a lot.

i've been configuring a new wiki on this site because i thought we would see if a wiki might be a better way to prep for a review.. as soon as i get it finished (tonight) we can see if its easier from your standpoint to use that or an html outline template.

i've used a couple of these tools - most are a bit overly complicated for my use.
i bought a license for edge diagrammer (which is already in your list) many years ago - it seemed to me much faster to start and use and was much more intuitive, made it easier for me to get ideas onto paper.  it may not be able to compete with some of the really complicated featuresets, but i've found it consistently more intuitive to use for limited stuff.

sword - that would be great to start off a review on diagrammers!

and wow!!! that's some list! 
personally i'm very interested in this category and would be thrilled to see a comprehensive review of this category.


let me put up a template for the part1 section of reviews on the website you can download.
basically its just like an outline with a table for putting info about programs.

at least 50-60% of the work of these reviews is collecting a list of the various applications and making this part1 overview of the category and the screenshots and program info, so it would be a HUGE great start to start to make progress on that.

let me know any other way i can help.

once the part1 "catalog" of programs is written, the rest of us can help narrow down the field and identify the top tier of programs that are worthy of more detailed investigation..

i'm really looking forward to this review..

yes to both.

the answer to first might be to run PT as a service; there was some discussion of looking into this earlier but i haven't yet.  if you can find any discussion of these issues and why some apps "resist" i'd love to see.

the answer to second is that i will probably implement this as an option, though there seems to be a debate about whether one would expect to get a benefit from this, since windows 2k/xp is supposed to do this semi-automatically behind the scenes, as i understand it.
