Excellent.

An older version of Weather watcher was actually recommended by us in our review of weather tools:

the new version looks a lot nicer too!!

The most immediate use we have been thinking about is as a tool for collaborative writing of Reviews.

That is, a place where many people can add content to about different programs so we can more easily build comprehensive reviews; different people might write up descriptions of different programs, etc.

It also might serve as an alternative portal for tracking feature requests and bugs, and an alternate way of hosting blogs where anyone on our site can write them.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer affecting Internet connection?
« Last post by mouser on October 31, 2005, 04:55 PM »
are you asking if changing an app's priority could change the internet connection speed of that individual app?
it's possible that it might i guess, if its a very cpu/bandwidth intensive download or upload..
it certainly shouldn't effect the internet connection of any other program - at least it shouldn't make it worse.

i use pt to tame website watcher all the time when it does tons of internet traffic.. never noticed anything unpleasent though i have no idea if it's slowing down the connection.

after playing more with drupal i have to say it is not ideal for collaborative editing.
so i'm still really torn.

i think what this site would benefit from most is a kind of collaborative editing system that wiki is meant to be.. but i think our intended use (collaborative reviews) would really benefit from some more access control options, including who can edit which sections, upload file permissions, etc.

Living Room / Flowchart and Diagramming Review

i have to tell you that this would be an incredibly useful review.
there are a lot of diagramming applications, and it's hard to know which one is best for which tasks, and they have a steep enough learning curve that it can be a really hard decision.  a nice comprehensive review with some advice for users would be *extremely* useful i think.  i myself would love to read this review.

i'm reading that mambo/joomla integrates much more easily with the smf forum system.. so i'm going to try a mamo install next.

sword i've been hard at work trying out content management systems like wiki, drupal, mambo, and i think this would be a perfect test case for building a hierarchical collaborative review.. let me just spend another day setting up another couple of tools, and we can see which one we think is best, and then maybe you would be willing to start off outlining this review using this new system? i think it would be very illuminating for us to see how well it suits such a task.

Piper is a plugin for RITLabs "TheBat" email client, which makes it easy to execute external programs and capture their output using macros when writing emails.

The Piper page is now up and you can download the first version of piper:

ps. Works great with our own program, https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/TheFormLetterMachine/index.html.

there are some pages though:

i noticed some wiki addon modules for drupal -
that might be a good compromise.

having played with drupal for only a couple of hours though i have to say i am very taken by it and it just feels right to me.

there are things about wiki that i really really like, but so far i can't bring myself to accept the poor support for managing users and content that i've seen so far.

if we can find nice wiki + blog + issuetracking modules for drupal it may be the ideal solution.

i can imagine it must be difficult to make these readable at this size,
but i do agree they do need to somehow say "made with"
and "Screenshot Captor" with a bit of a space.

there seem to be a ton of module addons for drupal - i saw some with bbcode support, and wysiwyg editors..
and some graphics addon modules too.. i suspect we just need to explore it more.

Site/Forum Features / Discussion - should we use drupal?
« Last post by mouser on October 30, 2005, 02:38 PM »
If you read my previous post on the my initial feelings about wiki you know i was not happy with it.

I've recently installed Drupal, and even without any fancy configuration I am loving it:

https://www.donationcoder.com/drupal/

I think it's likely we will remove the wiki and do all collaborative work through the Drupal pages.

I will try to set up an automatic registration for forum members so users don't have to sign up twice.

I'm also looking into the possibility of using a drupal-based feature request/bug report system, instead of the mantis standalone system we are using.

EDIT:
As you will read in this thread we have since decided not to go with drupal, and have actually settled on using MediaWiki, despite all of it's flaws.

i'm going to try drupal, that might match better my expectations.

[edit] drupal is suiting my tastes a lot better - i think we may use this for collaborative writing instead of wiki.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Confessions from a Wiki Hater ??!?
« Last post by mouser on October 30, 2005, 12:24 PM »
i've been reading more and more about configuring mediawiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki)

one of the most well respected wiki software.

and i'm having one overriding general impression: i'm really not feeling love for it at all.  in fact i'm feeling what could probably be termed strong dislike and disrespect.

the central concept of a wiki, that you have content that people can collaboratively easily edit, is one i whole heartedly endorse.  but looking at the pathetic level of user control and organization of mediawiki, which people seem to think is the bees knees has left me nonplussed.

just two example from the disorganized wikimedia "manual" pages:

Revoking user's privileges
In its current development stage, MediaWiki has a web-based interface to create users and make sysops and bureaucrats, but it has no interface for revoking privileges.
Currently, the only way to downgrade user's privileges is through SQL:
update user set user_rights='' where user_name='yourusername';
Version 1.4 Mediawiki:
UPDATE user_rights SET ur_rights="" WHERE ur_user=1;
or using Program phpMyAdmin read a textfile into the "TINYBLOB" ur_rights of table user_rights that contains the proper user-entries "sysop, bureaucrat, developer"
permissions are actually a hell of a lot worse than that, but that's just a flavor of how nonexistent any facilities for managing users are.

heres another nice example, the comparison page on the official mediawiki page:
http://en.wikipedia....t_management_systems

oops - no values for mediawiki itself... wtf?

and this is the official software for wikipedia?!? holy christ that's not good.

i spent many hours customizing the mediawiki "skin" to fit into donationcoder (www.donationcoder.com/wiki) but don't get too used to it, i think there's a very good change i may uninstall mediawiki.

it's just a total mess as far as i can see.

let me recap - i love the idea of collaborative editing of content, but for the love of god it's not that hard to imagine that you are going to need to be able to do some minimal amount of permission management, even if its just to restrict the editing of certain areas to certain groups.  apparently wikis are suffering from huge amounts of spam lately and part of the problem is no one anticipated this or decided that it might be useful to have some moderation over content..  who are these people coding this stuff?

am i a wiki hater?

agree about spelling:
the official spelling of the name is "Screenshot Captor"
and this is the one i used.  quickstart icon i better check into - i generall avoid spaces in install directories but the quickstart icon doesn't qualify for this.  only problem is once i make a mistake naming something in installer its hard to change without people getting duplicate entries.

Any way to combine the username/password from DonationCoder and the username/password required to access mantis?

we've been discussing this - i definitely agree it would be a nice thing to do.
