Ok guys+gals, you should notice a few changes on the site, plus some new pages.

Make sure you check out our updated home page and these completely new pages:
Start Page
What People are Saying Page
Fundraiser Page

We have an almost unbelievably amazing collection of software to give away this month - so much that we set up a special form to help us figure out the scientifically optimal way to give out all the prizes to people based on their desires.

And of course our programs will be getting some real updates this month as well.

I'll be posting more in the next days and weeks about our plans for the site, and I'll be posting more about how we would like to ask for your help in getting out the word about the site and our programs in the next 4 weeks.  We really want to make November something special.

I would also like to ask for your help financially.

Working on this site and on the programs on this site has been a labour of love - but it's also been a huge amount of work.. much more work than we ever anticipated.  If you've donated to the site in the past, will you please consider making another donation now that you've gotten to know us?  Your donation will help us make this site even better.

Please give what you can - what you are comfortable giving and still feeling like you are getting a wonderful bargain..

Thank you all,
and here's to another 8 months of fun new programs, interesting reviews, and great conversation  :beerchug:

jon -
i've added an alias to do exactly what you are asking -
the next version of F+R will be out in the next week or so and include a whole set of preconfigured aliases, including one to let you easily surf to web pages, and run applications as you say, and do lots of other stuff.

but here's a quick screenshot of the alias to do what you want, after you add it just type, for example: run notepad.exe

i just applied a little mod suggested by a user "wing" on the simplemachines forum that restricted each person's sig to once per page, which can make threads a little easier to read sometimes:

very good points...

and these are all issues i've wrestled with -
one of the real appeals of these all-encompassing cms systems is the idea that a single search searches everything, and a single login handles everything..

my biases are similar to carol's in terms of thinking the forum is a pretty nice solution for these things and as much can be put comfortably in forum the better.

i'm not sure the reviews would work here though - it would certainly have some advantages as carol says.. though we would lose some screen realestate and some control over formatting..

it needs some more thought..
i'm open to having a blogger section of the forum - though we'd have to figure out how to advise people on how to decide wheter a post belongs in blog section or living room.. there is a big overlap..

this is actually a great question.
here's a possible good solution.

the new hd based media players, one with giant hds,
some of them are basically just big hard drives with usb hubs.
plus they play music.

he can probably find one of these that would be very happy to let you transfer the files to it exactly as you want.

so your task is to find one of the hd-based mp3 players with usb interface that can do this.

Living Room / Re: incremental vs differential
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 05:35 AM »
also,
a main point is that there are only a small set of files you want constant incremental backups of; by restricted that set you can run incremental backups very quickly.

Living Room / Re: incremental vs differential
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 05:34 AM »
well i basically went over my motivation in the review i think:
https://www.donation...ckUpGuide/index.html

bottom line argument goes something like this:
  • full drive backups are extremely important
  • incremental versioned backups of your personal documents are extermely important

a drive backup tool just cannot do as good a job at incremental versioned backups as a dedicated tool for this; its clumsy at search and recovery, and personally i wouldn't trust it with so many different versions of files after months of daily incremental backups.

a file backup tool is not good at doing full drive backups; to use it for this would take much longer than a dedicated tool like acronis, and result in a bigger set of files without good support for recovery.

different tasks, different programs are better for each.

Living Room / Re: Close the Blog Section?
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 05:31 AM »
bottom line for me is i'm concerned that the blog section of the forum is too much trouble to maintain and too much trouble for the bloggers to keep posting, while being more difficult for people to read and comment on...

it's quite nice to have a place where you can go to read all of the posts of a given columnists in a nice clean organized way.. but i just don't know if having 2 separate places (forum + blog) is the way to go.

Living Room / Close the Blog Section?
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 05:28 AM »
I've been giving some real thought to whether we should close the blog section.

nudone and i were recently discussing it and he said it was ok if i pasted our email conversation:

i'm actually thinking about whether the blogs system as it is now is
in need to refinement.. what do you think?  my original idea was that
it was most important for the blog columnists to have their own mini
site, for their own complete control.. but sometimes i wonder if it
wouldn't make more sense to just have the blog content be posts on the
forum, where people wouldn't have to go to a separate page.. i don't
know - some people really like the blogs, as its a special place to go
and read things that isn't lost within the depth of the forum, but
others i think would rather not have to go to a separate page every
day to see if there is a new post...  maybe a special blog section of
the forum? still thinking about the best long term solution.. what do
you think?

your thoughts on the blog were extremely good - and almost exactly
match mine.  i'm tempted to make a post on forum about blogs and ask
you to just post your email message exactly.  it really sums up my
feelings too, plus add to that the fact that they are a little bit of
a pain to move around and keep configured, and difficult to keep the
columnists posting regularly..

the forum and the blogs are different things, with slightly different
audiences, but there is so much overlap that one really has to ask if
its worth it having a separate blog section..  as you say, blogs only
rarely get a lot of comments, but it seems to me that you are also
right that the audience reading the blogs are much less than those
reading the forum, for a variety of reasons.. and wouldn't it be
better to have a bigger audience and more comments?

at the time we started, there wasn't that much conversation on the
forums, and the blogs seemed an ideal way to have some new regular
content on the site - but now the forums are just overflowing with new
stuff every day to read, so that issue is gone.

the case for the blog columns now probably is that
for those who like having a blog/column where people can go to read
their stuff, and see a nice archive of their posts.  it's hard to do
that in a forum, where posts just get lost..  one way around that
would be to make a special section of the forum, if one wanted to keep
a collection of such things.  i don't know if that really makes sense
to do..

maybe an alternative situation would be to try to identify a few best
threads/posts each week and list them on a special page.. or maybe
there's another way to figure out how to highlight some regular posts
to make them stand out..

the one thing that has been nice about the blog columns is reading
some extended thoughts, and looking forward to a column on a regular
basis.. but maybe we could figure out a way to encourage that on the
forum and find a way to keep the best part of that in the forum...

i guess i'm leaning towards finding a way to remove the blog section
of the site and if possible capture the best parts of it in the
forum..

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Proxy launcher which closes app when its "done"
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 05:21 AM »
this request was inspired by a post from turtlleboy here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1394.0

..a program that could sense when a program has completed it's function (or goes idle) and then closes that program..

i think a commandline program that can launch another program (with normal args), but be given some instructions about when to shut down that program.

you might want to use it to launch a program and kill it after x minutes, or kill it if it uses too much cpu, or as turtleboy suggested, close it after some period of 'inactivity'.

so im thinking somthing like

RunAndClose.exe 'notepad.exe myfile.txt' -closeafter 10minutes -closeafterinactivefor 2minutes

just a reminder that i advocated in the backup review to use drive imaging to do full backups each time (once per month), and use a separate program to do incremental (keep all versions) backups of just your main personal documents (once a week/day).

you cant launch websites because you don't have the aliases for it. but don't worry the next version will come with a lot of useful aliases built in; it's a long time overdue and it will be released early this month.

what i need is a program that executes a par2 file and waits for it to complete the verification process and then close that par2 file and execute the next one in the batch.  I'd like to drag and drop the par2 files to this program

 :)

may i suggest a program that will do EXACTLY what you want.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Sticky alphatical list of oft-used programs
« Last post by mouser on November 02, 2005, 04:32 AM »
there is currently no way to do this, BUT i've often wondered if such a function wouldnt' be useful myself, and i have a good easy solution, which i will add in the new version to be released this month.

right now you only have 2 choices of what to show when the window comes up, either blank results, or last launched programs, in order of last launch.

what i propose is simply that you can specify what string to start out searching for when the window first displays, and in that string you could specify an alias group.

i know you might not be familiar with alias groups yet - hopefully my new demo movie will solve that, but suffice it to say that its very easy to make an alias group with exactly the programs you want in your startup list, in the order you want (and even with custom titles), and then simply tell F+R that you want the contents of this alias group to be show when the window appears.

sounds reasonable?
