Thanks for doing that, tinjaw  Note that mouser has already commented about this in this thread.

App, I stand corrected. Apparently, a pre-adaptation for tinjaw's condition existed at least 11 years earlier! Who knew?! It's not an exact science...

Nice one, by the way  ;D

Thanks, Deozaan- I love the KJV. There is a package that's been offered on BitsduJour a couple of times that I didn't jump at either time and sort of regret - SwordSearcher. It only covers the Bible but it looks VERY comprehensive. It was 51% off at Bitsdujour - I didn't jump because I wanted something with texts from other religions, but this does look fabulous nonetheless.

[OFF TOPIC]
Darwin, given you are a "Biological anthropologist interested in human variability at the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition"  how do you read tinjaw's anthropology, especially as one who has mutated a metallic lower mandible?  Also, from the structure of the occipital cap and the coronal suture is there a clue as to the time of the metallic mutation?  One thing for sure, the subject did see his dentist twice a year!
[/OFF-TOPIC]

Results are inconclusive, but I'd say that the mutation likely occurred AFTER 1988

Thanks, Chaim. That's not what I was thining of and I don't *think* that it will solve the problem that I am having as I don't have any Current Topic Notifications set up. Oh well. It's a really minor point anyway and I shall continue to select "Mark topic read" before I navigate away from "Show new replies to your posts".

Heh, heh - I suppose you're right! I wasn't thinking about it from that perspective, but now that you point it out, of course it ties right in with this discussion  :). I was motivated to ask the question because I have the "show new replies to your posts" page set as one of my startup tabs. There is one active thread here that I've no interest in following any longer but which I posted in once. I'd like to be able to flag it so that I am no longer alerted to new posts...

Cool question, Chaim! I've been tempted to buy specialized software to do this in the past but haven't yet taken the plunge. Like you, I'd like to be able to access more than one text and more than one version of any particular text.

CodeTrucker, thank you for the link - I'll check it out.

Living Room / Re: What do you think about "What I like to do" medallions
« Last post by Darwin on January 04, 2008, 07:12 PM »
Yup. Agreed - I'd meant to make that point in my post above - I am not against people listing non-computer/software/technology related interests as this gives me, and others, a better idea of who they are and what makes them tick!

Given what CWuestefeld brought to the table above, what would you see as a amiable arrangement?  He does present a valid point?

The only issue I can see is that in order to accomodate everyone's interests we'd need a LOT of medallions  :o I *think* that we could have, say, 5 - 10 medallions and users can pick 5 as you suggested. These could be very broad categories such as "photography", "software", "development", "music", etc. I dunno... now that you've challenged me to come up with a suggestion I can see how difficult this would be, because we'd probably need an enourmous diversity of medallions to accomodate the enormous diversity that exists here at DC. Food for thought.

Great suggestion, though, nonetheless, CodeTrucker

While I typed the above tinjaw and jgpaiva weighed in and made valid points. I still like the idea, despite tinjaw's comments. Why? Because I often forget to click on a poster's personal page. Regarding jgpaiva's suggestion that we each create our own medallions, I think that that would get out of hand, fast. For one thing, look at the differences in opinion that we've already seen about how to represent improvisation! If people start putting medallions up there's got to be some standardization so that everyone knows what the medallions are meant to represent!

I like the idea - as CodeTrucker noted, I already know more about him, ampa, and Chris (cwesterfield).

maybe a bit afraid that once "defined", people might start thinking about me as - oh, Tom, he's xyz

And I had you pegged as an abc type... who knew?!  :P

Good point, Chris and tranglos. The downside of any effort to allow people to filter what they do and don't see is that this is going to increase the burden on the moderators because, as I noted, inevitably there will be those who occasionally forget or consistently refuse to tag their own posts for content where appropriate...  :(

Quick comment - I *think* that tagging should adhere to the "keep it simple, stupid" axiom and should be invisible. I envision this working like this:

I make a post and eff and blind my way through it because I'm in a grumpy mood (could happen  :-[). Even from the depths of grumpdom I *know* that the post is off-colour so before I hit "post" I click on a radio button that will invisibliy tag my message as NSFW (or whatever we decide upon - maybe we could have three - "foul language", "inappropriate for minors", "graphic content", whatever) and my post goes up. Anyone who has NOT elected to filter posts using the tags we set up continues to enjoy DC as it's always been. Others who don't want to see foul language have my post filtered out... It relies heavily on each poster monitoring and tagging their own posts. Obviously an issue that will arise is that there will be those who choose not to bother tagging their posts - I think we'll just have to live with that.

Just my two-bits...

...I think that if app103's HTML tag was tied to tranglos's (click to view) button, with a strong public recommendation that anything not qualifying as "Polite Conversation" be labeled as such ... That the folks here could easily Self Police their way to a reasonable resolution.

Mods could also be allowed to insert the tag for any borderline stuff without having to resort to any feather ruffleing draconian post deletion.

This is what I was trying (but failing) to say above, and you've done it much more succinctly as well

I like the tagging idea   I'd like to see it implemented on the end-user side - ie if one is happy to keep DC as it has been they need do nothing more than be responsible for tagging their own posts, if necessary, but otherwise will see everything posted on DC. At the other end of the spectrum, those who wish to filter out profanities or vulgarisms may apply the tags as necessary. Seems win-win to me, as long as everyone cooperates. One isse that arises from this is how to tag posts and what to tag (or what content is deserving of a tag). I think we should trial tagging with minimal guidelines (other than "use your common sense" or "would I want my mother to read this?") and see how we get on before getting into maintained word, phrase and topic lists and user-guides.

Thank you CodeTrucker for raising this issue. I can only imagine how difficult it was. My re-reading of this thread is that people are generally receptive to the idea of accommodating differing viewpoints on what is and what is not acceptable and to working toward a resolution. With luck more ideas will be put forward in the coming days and a solution everyone can work with will be worked out. It really would be a shame to lose members and I think that offering people options about what content they will, and will not be able, to see is the best solution.

Once again the thread has moved on as I have typed...

Yes, I've faced that myself, f0dder - at least as a thought experiment. I have a number of licences that require machine codes to activate and I grind my teeth every time thinking about the real possibility that at some point in the near future the company will go belly-up and leave me high and dry.

...I think it is too narrow and robotic to make this a "Censorship -vs- Freedom of Speech" issue.  It isn't.  It is an issue of courtesy and consideration.  It is kindness.  It is choosing to care enough about someone else to modify your behavior to allow them to participate.

Agreed... but - there are well over 100,000 members on this site. Even if only 2% of them are active in the forum, that's a LOT of people to ask to moderate their own behaviour. If only 2% of that number choose not to respect this sentiment, it will be difficult to clean up the forum without resorting to outright censorship, if it is agreed that the boards need to be cleaned up. I'm not saying it can't (or shouldn't, for that matter) be done but I am not optimistic about the success of appealing to people's better nature! FWIW, the knowledge that my worries about other peoples' reactions to postings that I suspected might be objectionable were well-founded is enough to make me vow to try to avoid being personally responsible for such material in the future. Now we'll have to see how long I can stick to it  :o

I think I misunderstood  your question about NSFW earlier - I read your comment perhaps too quickly and inferred that you didn't understand what the acronym meant! Looks like you were really asking where this tagging system/mechanism is to be found. From what I can tell, it's just an idea at the moment.

The posting here is fast and furious - 3 4 while I typed the above. Just to echo TucknDar's sentiment - whatever the outcome of this discussion, I hope that you continue to frequent DC, CodeTrucker, it would be a real shame to lose you.
