the 'create linked window' functions sounds similar to what tablane does but i thought that all current tabbed browsers allowed tiling/cascading of pages/panes/windows (whatever they should be called).

this may be just an aesthetic thing but the way tablane works is to automatically resize the 'lanes' so that there is no 'dead' space within the window - each 'lane' fits tight against each other. to me, this 'feels' better as it's self adjusting and doesn't require you to keep messing about resizing windows to fit nicely on the screen.

i've had a look through a lot of maxthon plugins and i can't find anything that does what tablane does - what about firefox, no one prepared to stand up for it on this one?

General Software Discussion / remember 'broadpage' browser - here's 'tablane'
« Last post by nudone on March 30, 2006, 04:03 PM »
there used to be a browser called 'broadpage' that allowed you to view two (or more) web pages at the same time within a single window, similar to tiling windows vertically on the desktop.

alas, 'broadpage' is no more.

but, oh joy, here  comes 'tablane' http://www.tablane.com

for me, the most beneficial feature that tablane has, is the ability to open links from one pane directly to the adjacent pane, i.e. you could keep your search results in view whilst each result that you clicked upon would then open alongside in the next pane, or 'lane' as the authors of the program like to call them.

okay, you can achieve similar results by opening two browsers on your desktop and tiling them, then simply dragging links from one window to the other - but it wouldn't be as much fun as using 'tablane'.

it's early days for the browser, there are bugs and not many options but i think it shows promise. i'll not be using it as my main browser but i'll certainly be tempted to give it a try when i know i'm going to be browsing several sites at a time (which is a lot now that i think about it).

i've still not tried 'firefox' (shock, horror) so i wouldn't be too surprised if there is a plugin that behaves in a similar way to 'tablane'. if there is i'd like to hear of it please - the point being that a link, when clicked, will automatically open up in the next 'pane' and not the 'pane' the link is in.

(if there is a plugin for 'maxthon' that performs this kind of function then i'd like to hear about that also - if firefox can do it then it may well be the thing that finally makes me a convert.)

Living Room / Re: for the dual monitor dudes
« Last post by nudone on March 30, 2006, 03:03 AM »
if you've played around with the settings for a single monitor (resolution, etc.) you shouldn't really have a problem setting up dual monitors. the options are in the same place for single and dual monitor support, i.e. display properties > settings tab.

that will get the basics done for you anyway. there are other things you can play around with but the process of plugging a second monitor in and getting it to display is quite simple.

beyond that there are other features that you may use like sending windows to different monitors by using the 'nview' options.

the only other thing i'd point out is that there is a little program that lies hidden away in the nvidea program folder that allows you to set various configurations for monitor views. this allows you to quickly turn on or off the displays and change a few other settings. unfortunately i can't remember the name of it as i'm away from my home computer at the moment.

i'd just plug 'em in if i were you, i'm sure you'd have it all working within a few minutes.

if you used media player classic to play the swf file you could just press the '1' key and you'll only see the swf playing, no buttons, etc.

it certainly is a bit dumb that the text doesn't translate to text - it could have been almost useable otherwise.

this is insane but worth a quick look. you could always pretend that you are neo from the matrix and impress/confuse your friends with it.

Living Room / Re: Video: The paradox of choice - why more choices are often bad
« Last post by nudone on March 29, 2006, 01:42 AM »
agreed. yet, i live in the UK where 'choice' is nothing like it is the US and i'm still paralysed. it's trivial but i noticed it at a young age - just trying to pick out which chocolate bar i'd buy from a shop.

it's always been a bit of a joke between my friends when we're in a shop together and we all start complaining that there is too much choice.

it's nice to hear someone confirm our suspicions in a more academic way.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Where is Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0??
« Last post by nudone on March 29, 2006, 01:35 AM »
can you give me and idea of what you typically do with photoshop elements, i.e. do you transfer your photos from camera to hard drive then pick out certain ones and give them a specific tag, then tag some others, and then a few more, etc. until you have tagged every image.

or do you tag a few and then organise the rest by their date or some other attribute.

i'm curious as to your none folder specific method.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Where is Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0??
« Last post by nudone on March 28, 2006, 04:27 PM »
your description of photoshop elements sounds like what picassa 2 does to me and yet you don't like that. i must have missed something in elements that was nicer than picassa.

if you wished, you could add any number of notes or labels to images in acdsee and then view things accordingly - regardless of the folder structure.

as has been discussed elsewhere on this forum, 'notes' and 'labels' are super powerful ways of organising files/information. the only bad thing is that perhaps a lot of us haven't realised just how useful this method is of managing our collections. i certainly keep forgetting to organise my images using labels and notes and yet i know that in the long run it would be a great time saver.

back to your question of can acdsee do something similar to what you use photoshop elements for - yes, it can, but you probably aren't going to gain anything by switching to it if you are happy with your current method.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Where is Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0??
« Last post by nudone on March 28, 2006, 02:17 PM »
well, i guess it's just down to how you organise things. if you are happy to organise images into folder hierarchies manually then acdsee will then let you 'work' upon those files. view, include, exclude images by all of the common sort of attributes and then take it up a level by viewing groups of disjoint files across many different location using 'notes', metadata, tags, time intervals, etc.

maybe this means it's still primarily a 'browser'. it's down to the user to delve a bit deeper and start organising - i suppose the batch functions could be used too, i keep forgetting they are there.

when i get the time i'll try to do a comparison between acdsee pro and adobe bridge - maybe lightroom too - not promising anything, though.

might be just what you are used to. photoshop elements doesn't really do it for me but then i've grown up on acdsee so maybe i'm biased. organisation wise, that's what acdsee is all about - isn't it?

good point, Hirudin, i've used the rar method a couple of times for stubbornly long paths with too many directories.

i've used long file names for years. can't remember any problems - not even at other peoples computers when i take my cds to them.
