i agree with your thoughts on reviews (by the way we already do exactly what you suggest with review discussion threads).

as for a special section of forum for blog entries, that was kind of my idea with "Noteworthy Posts" section idea, or maybe we can think of a new name for it.  I was just thinking of using it not just for blogs but for other similar rants and stuff.  Idea would be that we could maybe move a post there (or link from there to it) if we thought it was of special attention.

Can i take a moment to say thank you to all of the blog columnists who were generous enough to spend time writing columns..

It's hard to remember back 8 months but when we started the site there was very little actual discussion on this forum, and the blog columns were a great source of content on the site.

They were entertaining and informative little articles that were always fun to come read when there was nothing else new, and they really gave the site some personality.  Thanks especially to nudone, jibz, vrgirl, and tensieken who volunteered early and kept the blogs interesting.

As the forum grew in activity, the blogs became more and more redundant, and I think it's natural that as the activity and discussion grows here, the need for an independent blog section decreases.

So let's just view this as a natural evolution of the site; i'll bring the older blog columns into the forum for everyone to read, and we can see what's next in store for us..

Ok, i guess the board has spoken.. actually not many spoke but i think that speaks for itself..  I've removed the blog (columns) link from the top navigation bar..  I will find a way to put the past blogs somewhere useful - probably integrate them into the forum somehow.

Maybe a section like "Noteworthy Posts"
which would normally just be weekly list of pointers to the best posts on the forum, but could be initialized with the older blogs..

General Software Discussion / 2 questions for shareware authors
« Last post by mouser on November 14, 2005, 01:23 AM »
so we released a new app here (Unicode Image Maker), and each time we do i have to go around and manually submit these pad files to different software sites so that people will find out about our programs.  It's really annoying.  I use shareware .pad files which help a lot, but some sites inexplicably still do not take them and require you to enter by hand.  even those that do are often a real pain.

question 1:
has anyone tried those automatic software submission programs? do they work well?  i'd love for dc to host a review of such tools if anyone is willing to take on that.

question 2:
the natural place to find out people's opinion on this seems like maybe it would be shareware association newsgroups, but they are private and require membership.  membership is $100 a year - OUCH, thats a huge amount for us.  and our soft is not shareware.  question 2 is, anyone a member of shareware association? do you think its worth the membership dues?

i mailed mike with my donation and asked him if he wouldn't mind taking a look at the thread and adding any comments if he had any.  i think it's always helpful to hear from authors if they want to take the time to add some comments. it also tells you alot about the authors if they take the time to make a comment.

btw.
a lot of us really dislike the default windows xp "skinned" blue appearance and start menu, etc.,
thankfully it can easily be changed into "classic" look which looks just like win2k.

strayte -
love the design!!! it has a very architectural feeling to it.  i'm not sure if art deco is the right term or if there is a proper term for this style?
we're getting some really great designs i don't know how we could choose just one..

maybe we will have to do like google and have a couple of different designs used in different places or at different times, always with a little bird holding coin integrated into the design in some fashion - maybe just standing off to the side looking up at it?

momonan,
i assume by front-facing, you mean the sketch version of the bird.. he does look awfully cute how he's looking right at you :)

carol i think you should pursue a second career as a detective - even if this isn't the cause in this case, it's great detective work and seems like it could definitely be an issue for people to be aware of - i'm going to remember this post in case similar issues come up for people.

i'm loving this thread :)

kind of a fun idea carol to have a circular window with bird in it doing fun things like carrying bag of coins or picking up coins.. i may try to make a flash movie of it that can be used to make different future funny movies like little intermissions.

love the new bird nudone - but i love the old sketch one too :)
who knew you were such an artist!  can't decide which one i like best.

i think the bird with coin in its mouth does make the perfect mascot logo

Thanks for taking the time to post mike - it's appreciated.

As I was saying, I think you are just trying to find a way to get a little money back from your software to help offset all of the time spent, while still being able to keep it available for free - an approach we can obviously identify with here on this site, since we are interested in the same thing.

I appreciate that people can be overly reactive about programs that show ads.  As we've discussed on this forum, people tend to mix in their minds spyware and adware, and think of any ad showing ap as evil spyware/malware, which it isn't.

It can be hard to tell the difference though, especially when something gets installed which doesn't just show ads in its own window but rather messes with other software on your system..

Personally I wouldn't bundle software like WhenU SaveNow - I know that it would upset people and confuse them - though i agree with you that its not going to harm their system.  But having said that we should appreciate that you are making a full version without any such adware available and easy to access on your site, so that anyone taking the time to visit the site and read can get a version without any advertising at all - and that should be commended.

Anyway, again I'm a weather watcher fan - i would heartily recommend it (and in fact we did recommend it in our review of such programs) as long as you keep a non adware version available - i would just caution people to visit the site and make sure they download the right version for them.  And if you like the program make a small donation.

i agree, there may be room to use multiple images for different things -
might be good to have a common thread through so that they are all somehow "recognizable" as being us.
however that common thing could be that bird holding a coin - it seemed to fit in very well with kniht's other logo, and it may fit in with others too - kind of like a theme where the bird is always in the logo somewhere.

one of the things we will be doing is making some shirt with the logo(s) i think, to give away as prizes or put on cafepress or something as an alternate way for people to donate.

Official Announcements / New Program Released - Unicode Image Maker
« Last post by mouser on November 13, 2005, 03:33 AM »
Novemeber 13, 2005
Unicode Image Maker is a program for international users, that let's you create images from text, especially Unicode or Nonstandard Font Text. It is useful for adding unicode text as images in graphics applications that cannot directly support Unicode.

Web page for program is here: https://www.donation...mageMaker/index.html

Key features:
  • Embeds the formatted richtext inside images (jpg, tiff, png) so that you can simply reopen (drag+drop supported) the image to recover and edit the original formatted text.
  • Saves images with transparent backgrounds -- ideal for overlaying text images on other images.

Let me know if it works ok for you - might take a bit of experimentation to learn how to use it :)
