Living Room / Re: Some ideas to help do more full length reviews..
« Last post by mouser on December 04, 2005, 04:20 AM »
anyone have any more ideas for how to encourage members to take on a review?  we need to get back into doing more frequent reviews i think - it's too much to bear to wait for a full month for each review!

yep, i really just have to get passed my innertia that has me used to netcaptor..
firefox with good tab extensions seems the way to go, i just have to get myself used to it.

an idea:
should dc sponsor a firefox extension programming contest at some point, offering a prize or something to the best plugin?  there probably arent many coders here yet who are ready to write firefox plugins so we'd want to get out the word to some firefox plugin site about it, but it might be worth a try for fun.  maybe we can come up with some new ideas for plugins that we'd like to see.. maybe betsy's idea in another thread to have a plugin that remembers text size settings on dif pages.. is there a good firefox plugin writers community somewhere?

luckman you must have a nice lcd monitor to notice the difference at that size :)

an alert box is the name used for that style of notification that is like a little box that is shown in outlook or msn messenger, where it kind of rises up from lower right of your screen and then dissapears.  it's just an alternative way of showing a bit of info.

fantastic description of what is good about the godfather - that is very cool about the scripting..

ps. i'm going to move this to the user mini review section where people will get more chance to see it.
maybe you could add a screenshot on your next post hirudin.

very interesting point - screenshot captor is designed to try to be smart and auto names files so they don't overwrite each other.  but in your case you specially WANT it to overwrite the pervious one.

so if i understand you, you would like an option for the timed capture that says:
  • overwrite any existing file

and maybe ill add another option
  • run this program on capture: _____________________________

does that seem right?

if so i'll add it to todo list and should have it implemented on next release this month.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: WhyReboot?
« Last post by mouser on December 03, 2005, 07:34 PM »
yeah it reports a couple more registry things...

but it brings up a reasonable point - whyreboot? hasn't been updated in over 2 years and it's a very simple program see below!
[i wonder if a good coding snack might not be to implement this and look for any other registry keys or files that might be useful to see.
not sure there is anything to update but could if so it would make a good coding snack.]

i really have to start using firefox as my default browser - some of those plugins sound fantastic.

if you have truely malicious software then you are probably going to be in trouble no matter what; though a fireall can be a  very nice early warning system... otherwise you'd never know anything was wrong.

but just as important, short of malicious software, an outgoing firewall will show you all the spyware/adware apps as they try to silently connect home.  and for those of us that like to know whats going on on our computers and don't like programs going behind our backs, its nice to see when programs try to check for updates, or programs like real player is trying to connect home, etc.  in other words, for programs that are not evil but are annoying and misbehaved, having an outgoing firewall alert can be a very nice thing.  i wouldnt dream of not using one.  it's not perfect of course, but it is an extra line of defense, and one well worth the cpu/mem cost.

WhyReboot?

This tiny little freeware program is very simple but i find myself using it constantly, whenever some program tells me it wants to reboot to "complete the install".

Can usually give you some good insight into what operations are pending the reboot:
Tiny, simple, risk free; doesn't change anything, just reports on what it finds in the registry settings that are used to perform operations on rebooting.

an example of how you might use such a program: you download tons of pdf files on a regular basis and you want to easily identify and remove duplicates.  a duplicate file finder is one of those things that if you need it, you really need it, and a good one can save you tons of time.  but not everyone needs such a tool.

Living Room / Merriam Webster "Open Dictionary" - welcoming new words
« Last post by mouser on December 03, 2005, 12:33 AM »
"Merriam-Webster just released Open Dictionary to better take and share the pulse of language through the Web. Of course, Webster's has long celebrated and conveyed language's evolution - unlike linguistic prescriptivists who fail to grasp that's just what language does; and - where I've compared entries - they've certainly done so in a more consistent, professional fashion than online amateurs have in recent years: might Open Dictionary - in conjunction with Webster's standard Online Dictionary - yield the best of authoritative (top-down) and organic (bottom-up), online lexicography?"

nice idea.

I just wanted to say again THANK YOU to everyone who donated in November during our fundraiser.

For many of you it was not your first donation, and I can't tell you how much your continued support of the site means.   :-[

I also just wanted to point out that your donations have real effects.

For one thing they have allowed us to be able to afford this new dedicated server we've been on for the last month.  It wasn't clear initially if we were going to be able to afford to stay on it, but your donations have made it possible for us to do so.

And I'm sure you'll agree if you visited us before November and you think back, that the new server has made all the difference in the world in terms of making the site fast and responsive.
