Living Room / Re: Conficker - The Facts
« Last post by app103 on April 01, 2009, 12:38 AM »
Going to HTTP://ip.number.here often won't work, since the site won't get the "Host: domain.name.com" HTTP header they expect. You'd have to put the IPs in your hosts files, but that file is probably used by DnsQuery() and thus the method is going to fail because Conficker's patching.

That is very true, but using a proxy like hidemyass.com would probably work, without the need of even trying the IP and using the actual URL that conficker is blocking. And yes, you can download removal tools through that proxy. I tested it.

BSOD's are quite rare for me, even on my old WinME machine.

The last one I had was on that WinME machine, about 2 years ago, when I attempted to reboot while still connected to the internet on dialup. I would say that was a modem issue and not a Windows issue, so I don't feel it says anything negative about Windows, itself. That particular modem will always cause a BSOD if you do not disconnect before attempting to reboot or shut down.

I used to get them quite frequently on my P3 (ran WinME, too), and it was related to the ATI graphics drivers. Again, not the fault of Windows.

Almost all cases of BSOD's that I have seen can be traced to bad hardware drivers, an antivirus malfunction (McAfee & Norton, most commonly), or a failing hard drive that is causing data corruption. I have never actually seen one caused by Windows, itself, except once...

Back in the Win98 days, there was some sort of IE vulnerability that could be exploited in AOL chat rooms by typing a certain string of text, that would cause a BSOD and disconnection of everyone in the chat room that was running Win98. That wasn't fun, but Microsoft did patch that about a month later, although some people are slow to update their systems (some things never change) and the problem persisted for a lot of people, for many months.

As an experiment, I put together a Greasemonkey script to change the color of the reply date string if it's been more than 180 days.

Thanks to your script another necro-spammer was uncovered and his "ad" removed.

It currently only works w/ dates that contain YYYY-MM-DD portions, but if there's interest, may be it can be appropriately modified ;)

Didn't realize that part when I first installed it and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for me. Then I changed how the date is displayed in my forum preferences and it worked great.

Find And Run Robot / Re: 32x32 Icons
« Last post by app103 on March 29, 2009, 06:47 PM »
I have 74 social site icons, created for a project I am working on, but they are all 16x16. (ico/bmp/png)

In case someone else has a use for them, I have attached them.

Also included in the zip is a text file with the URL format for user profiles on those sites, just in case someone would like that info for a project of their own.

I have not finished fixing up the ico files, but they would look fine, as is, on a white background.

I don't think a captcha to post would make a difference if it's a human spammer that already got past the captcha to make an account on the forum, in the first place.

I don't think we have an issue with spambots reviving old threads. If anything, it's human spammers that are quite capable of passing a captcha test, clicking extra buttons, etc., so adding more hoops for humans to jump through in order to stop spammers would be pointless, as they can jump through the same hoops anyone else can.

Restricting posting on older threads only to members after a certain number of posts is also not such a good idea, as this would deter posting to an older thread by someone that actually has something valid to add that may have just discovered the forum.

The best we can probably do with regards to human spammers posting on old threads is to delete it when we catch it and ban the spammer.

But it might be easier to spot if there was a visual indicator to readers, like I explained before.

Another thing to keep in mind is how I detect spam on the forum is usually with popup cody. If I see something that is obvious spam, I click through and take action, usually before anyone else gets a chance to see it. And I am not the only one that uses this method and is removing spam. (that's why you don't see that much spam around here) There is nothing in the popup to indicate when the last post in the thread was, so I don't know when I see it that an old thread was just revived. I do have an indicator of when the thread was started, but that really isn't anything to go by on this forum because there are many threads that have had a long beautiful life and still going strong. (the note-taking thread, for example)

If you do see something you suspect is spam, report it. I check all the reports that hit my inbox and delete any obvious spam, and if I am not sure about it, I leave it to another mod to check or bring it to mouser's attention and ask him what he thinks.

All in all, this forum has very little in the way of a spam problem. And it has been kept well under control. You can read the RSS feed from here without seeing a million spam posts, unlike another forum I am a member of, in which their feed is so loaded with spam (about 90%) that I can't find the valid posts any more. I had to unsubscribe and go back to visiting that forum directly, in order to avoid the spam. (google reader caches the posts in the RSS feed and shows older stuff that was removed, which includes all the spam) DC's RSS feed is still very clean in google reader, which means we are doing a great job getting rid of it very quickly.

We are not being over-run by spammers, so relax. This isn't an urgent issue that needs drastic action that would inconvenience normal members.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Custom Views in Windows Explorer (XP)
« Last post by app103 on March 29, 2009, 11:53 AM »
In previous versions of Windows, there were special views you could set as the default, such as the picture folder type that had a much better viewer on the sidebar with a bigger thumbnail and could even display animated gifs. It was also possible in Win2k to have a media player in the sidebar for audio/video files.

When XP came along, you lost the ability to have these custom folder templates, and you can no longer edit an existing one or even make your own.

One of the things I really miss from WinME is the pie charts on the sidebar when at the root of a drive. In XP I have to go to My Computer and right click a drive and view the properties to see it. I think having it automatically showing in the Explorer sidebar made me much more aware of how much space I was actually using or had left.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Update Your Browser! It's Obsolete!...
« Last post by app103 on March 29, 2009, 06:34 AM »
As ehtyar said, there are people that can't upgrade/update to whatever they are pushing, for a variety of reasons.

None of the browsers they list (IE, Firefox, or Safari) have a version that is current and capable of running on Win9x. Are they going to list K-Meleon for 9x users? Or are they just going to be browser/OS bigots for profit?

I can't help but wonder the motivation that site has with their message, such as getting people to link to them so they have a higher PR and the ad space they have is worth more money?

And pushing IE7 when the current version is actually IE8? I think they may need to update their browser.  ;D

OK, I got it fixed.

Seems the default was set to open in IE, even though opening from Explorer never opened them in IE.

Weird.

Living Room / Peculiar Firefox .gif issue
« Last post by app103 on March 27, 2009, 12:09 PM »
If I download or save images with a .png or .jpg file extension, and then in Firefox's download manager right click and select Open, they open in the system default application for viewing those file types. In other words, it works correctly.

But if the file extension is .gif, rather than using the system default application, it opens the .gif file in IE. If I select Open Folder and then open the .gif file from Explorer, it opens in the correct application, so I don't think it's a Windows issue with default program for that file type.

The issue is only with opening .gif files from Firefox's download manager, no other image types are affected.

Does anyone know why it is doing this, and even better, how to fix it?

@J-Mac - This isn't just about spam. There are 2 issues here:

1. Spammers that bring up old threads.

2. Regular members that bring up old threads.

Spam or not, there does need to be some sort of visual indicator alerting other readers when a large gap of time has passed between posts in a thread.

There is nothing wrong with bringing up old threads when there is a legitimate reason to do so, but when there is, it would be nice to know before you respond to it.

A warning to the poster if they are about to post to an old thread with a confirmation that they still want to do this, and then the automatic insertion of some visual indicator if they decide to go ahead with it.

If you have ever been on other forums where they have Google ads, and seen how they appear as posts made by Google, complete with Google's avatar & all, then you have some idea what I meant by the thread necromancer "user" idea, where a post is inserted right before the post from the user that brings the thread back to life.

Even if it were just a small statement of "this thread has been brought back to life" it would go far to alerting readers that this is what has just happened.

This isn't going to stop spam, as nothing really can stop a determined spammer, but when a regular member is about to bring an old thread back to life, they would be more aware of what they are about to do. And if they do post, we would notice the gap in time between the last post and their new one before we respond to it.

That sounds like a good idea, a notice similar to the one you get when you are about to reply to a thread and another post was made since you hit the reply button.

There should also be some sort of marker between posts if the length of time between them is greater than a few months, to alert others that someone has in fact brought up an older topic.

i don't like the idea of closing old threads and opening newer ones to continue a discussion. It leads to fragmentation of discussions.

It doesn't matter if you close old threads when it comes to spammers, they will just post on newer ones or start a new thread of their own.

And we have never had issues with old threads being resurrected by members, whether they are new ones or old ones. A discussion is a discussion and one of the great things about this forum is that people don't freak out and come after you with pitchforks for wanting to drag up something old and bring it back to life.

(Eudora is an example of an excellent software product (from Qualcomm) that basically closed up development because of the bundling of the mediocre Outlook Express.)
-Steven Avery (March 15, 2009, 09:38 AM)

Eudora closed up because they didn't take the right approach to marketing their software. It's as simple as that. They didn't know how to compete, and not just compete with Outlook Express. They didn't know how to compete at all. That isn't Microsoft's fault...and it isn't Outlook Express' fault.

Eudora was so bad at marketing that they couldn't sell a thirsty man in a desert a glass of water. That was their problem...not OE. And that is the problem with most companies that complain about Microsoft bundling apps with their OS.

Seems to me that there are other email applications that managed to be much more successful than Eudora, despite not being included with Windows or the fact that Windows came bundled with Outlook Express. Incredimail seems to have found their way onto many more PC's than Eudora. I wonder how they did that when Windows already has Outlook Express.  :tellme:

And I don't think that Outlook Express was the application that ultimately put the nail in the coffin for Eudora. I believe Thunderbird was.

Most of the apps that are included with Windows are starter apps, meant to be replaced. They are not the most feature loaded, fully functional applications that exist. They are very basic and leave plenty of room for developers to write better stuff with more features that users will want to use to replace the basic starter set of applications that Microsoft has provided.

I never once heard Adobe cry because Windows comes with Paint. Or Microsoft ever complain that they couldn't sell copies of Word because they made the mistake of putting Wordpad in Windows, so Eudora claiming they couldn't compete because Windows comes with crappy OE is just plain bull.

I don't recall iTunes being a Microsoft product, but it sure seems to come preinstalled on most brand new Windows based computers. I wonder how it got there. It didn't get there by Microsoft putting it there, that's for sure.

I never once saw a pc that included Eudora, Opera, or a trial version of software from any of the loudest complainers as part of an OEM bundle. And I never hear any of those that did approach the OEM's and get their stuff preinstalled ever complain about any kind of "anti-trust" crap (except Google, who made a deal with Dell to get their desktop search preinstalled, instead of their browser, yet want to complain about IE).

Just be happy that they are only starter apps and Microsoft never went all out and bundled all the software they make into a single product. Although I think if Windows Ultimate came with Office, Visual Studio, and every last one of their other applications & games at a very reasonable price, it would be one heck of a killer package definitely worth upgrading to.
