Find And Run Robot / Re: TalkAboutShareware thread
« Last post by mouser on December 08, 2005, 12:07 PM »
well you all know my position about these things - i understand how people might be wary of a site that is so "aggressively" trying to encourage donations.  we should be open to criticism and take these complaints seriously and at face value and try to answer questions and frustrations with a plain explanation of what we are trying to do.  In fairness the world is filled with people trying to scam and spam people so let's cut them a little slack if they start out suspicious of anything out of the ordinary.

i agree superboyac, i'm also a directory opus fan.  for people who like powerdesk, directory opus has a similar feel but is arguably much more powerful (though the price is arguably way too high).

that page is just showing posts from the usenet group alt.freeware and there is a delay between the time of posting and the time it shows up on that page.

[edit: my reply is up, if anyone feels like adding some *constructive* words to the discussion there it would be welcome]

Dr.Windows / Re: Dr.Windows Dialogs - Add Yours!
« Last post by mouser on December 08, 2005, 08:23 AM »
ps.
people should probably add a field like
Author: Stefan
to their dialogs, just for giving yourself credit.  it won't be shown.

i like this idea very much -
i was thinking of a program that did this and some other cleanup and maintenance functions on files/folders.  interested to here if there are already some good programs that do this kind of thing.

thanks very much for the heads up rjbull - it's great to know about such things while they are occuring so i can add my 2cents to them.  I've posted a lengthy follow up if anyone cares to read and add to it, it would be appreciated.

and please remember to be polite and understanding of people who are upset about having to jump through hoops for a freeware program - the best thing to do is just explain what we are trying to do and why.  Most people are willing to listen and are reasonable once they see we aren't trying to pull a scam.

Best Firewall / Re: agnitum outpost v3 - the horror?
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2005, 09:40 PM »
Of particular note is the fix to the problem of the rules wizard's custom rule dialog not automatically entering the IP of the requested host. I understand that the IP is, once again, provided in the suggested rule.

i noted this as well - definitely a good thing to have fixed (i actually posted about this problem a while ago on the outpost forum when i noticed it originally).  was a bad bug and it's good that it's fixed.

on the downside:
agnitum is still not releasing version histories, it's like a gossip mill trying to figure out what is new in each version - BAD SHOW

well i am one of those people having a hard time migrating to firefox just because I'm used to something else, but i can see its got some fantastic features and expect to be moving to it as my main browser soon.  i do think that google's decision to marry up with firefox virtually guarantees that firefox is going to be getting better and better with the increased financial support (will there be downsides to google's involvement? i don't know).  but it does mean that firefox is probably only going to get better and better in terms of stability, security, and features.

my main worry with the wiki as it is now is that it's quite empty and people may get dissapointed when they go looking for content and find very little.. but maybe it's just a matter of time.

Official Announcements / Discount Summary Page
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2005, 08:39 PM »
The main Specials page (see link at top of each page) usually highlights the biggest discounts for apps that have won our awards.

But you might not know that there is also the Discount Summary Page which now shows a good overview all discounts available to members along with expiration dates, links to program homepages, and links to the members only section post with the discount code:

https://www.donation...Discounts/index.html

(you can get to that page from the left hand sidebar of the Specials page as well, btw).

as tempting as it is to encourage adding content to the wiki, i think we might be better off focusing the wiki on areas of content where we can really deliver.  It seems to me that your info is extremely useful but belongs somewhere where such information has a context and other posts by others in same area, and donationcoder.com is probably not such a place.

it's not a settled issue of course, we're still trying to figure how to best use that wiki and figure out which content belongs in forum and which in wiki.  i kind of think that best use of the wiki might simply be for collaborative group software reviews, listing user sites and info, and maybe some how-to's on using the software from our site.

someone requested an app like this recently; there are others apps to do this but just noticed this new one on snapfiles.com:

On demand or batch assessment of documents in folders, email and on websites

Living Room / Interesting article on "nintendogs"
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2005, 07:18 PM »
http://www.laweekly..../01/pass-bearman.php

Therein lies Nintendogs inexorable pull: It’s the first game powered by empathy. These things are much more convincing than the Tomogatchis, those rudimentary keychain creatures from the first virtual pet craze a decade ago. Nintendogs go a long way toward satisfying a sort of canine Turing test: If they look and act enough like dogs, then at a simple cognitive level, they’re a pretty good substitute.

Official Announcements / New Beta Release - Dr. Windows - Help Needed and CONTEST!!!
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2005, 06:59 PM »
This is just a funny little joke program called Dr.Windows which pops up fake windows error messages.

It's good for playing tricks on relatives.

But...

I need help making more dialogs for it before we can release it!
There are only a few dialogs included in this beta, we need many more.  They are easy to make, the dialogs are just plain text files.
Anyone have a good sense of humour?  Help us out and make some funny original messages.

Thanks!

I'll just add that wanderer is talking about (our very own) Skrommel's program:

And also a reminder: feed the skrommel!!

(That's a euphimism that means, if you like skrommel's programs you should consider donating him a couple bucks to encourage his continued work; donation link on skrommel's one hour software page).

« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2005, 03:02 PM »
Words cannot begin to describe the awesome eruption that is created from adding Mentos candies to a 2-liter bottle of soda. The eruption is enormous... and so is the learning if you consider the chemistry.
