Living Room / Re: Am I the only one who finds the new Apps-based world boring?
« Last post by superboyac on September 29, 2010, 02:38 PM »
I strongly agree with mouser and zaine's top two posts.  My knee-jerk reaction is to rant about the whole thing.  However, more and more, I'm realizing that we are just in the extreme minority.

Mobile computing is the future, or actually, the present.  Desktop applications and the people who actually prefer them are fast becoming the minority.  we're seeing more and more people turn to their phones to do their computing needs.  And that makes sense.  Most people don't do too much other than browse the web, write some emails, text, and play a few simple games.  I frequently hear about people who first get an iphone and then they say things like, "I don't even use my computer anymore."  Their needs are met by the simple phone, and in a way they prefer over the "complicated" desktop pc's.

That's a little depressing to me because I'm totally desktop guy.  But there's nothing we can do.  It's just going to get worse, and we are going to continue to be in the minority.  One thing I take heart in is that with the focus moving towards "apps" and mobile computing, the desktop market is being largely ignored by both the big players and small time developers.  So for any budding entrepreneurs out there, there are going to be lots of opportunities to address all the issues that are being ignored.  So while I largely agree with rxantos on all of his points, I do still believe that this movement will lead to more opportunities for those interested.  Somebody is going to innovate something in a good way for us, and we will probably be very thankful for it.  I know I will be.

@superboyac:[/b] Your question is a loaded question - full of assumption - and thus may provoke a random/irrational response.
I know.  I did it on purpose.  I like to provoke people occasionally...er...often.

As far as forum fatigue goes, that's also a gray area.  If it was easy to search for things and find the answer without having to find the needle int he haystack, then sure, I agree.  But it's not like that.  If it's not a forum you are registered, you will often have to first register to search.  That alone, makes me want to just come here and ask.  Also, even if the search is available, if its interface is klunky and the results are hard to sift through, same thing.  Just because you have the ability search doesn't mean it's helpful.

And you know what I'm realizing from all of this?  It's just me.  I shouldn't subject others to my moodiness about this stuff (especially lately).  Maybe I'm just over-sensitive to this subject.  So I shouldn't be a dick and be impatient right off the bat.  It's pretty bad! ;D Sometimes, I feel like I'm being impatient before anything even happens, because I'm just predicting what's coming in my head.  That's no good!

Anyway, you guys are the best.

Unrelated:
I just had a talk with one of my coworkers, who knows how to program.  Man, he has some really cool stuff going on.  I was talking to him about backing things up and file synchronizing and all that.  The guy has written his own program to backup his stuff.  It's amazing.  The database keeps track of the files, but it also knows if another person has that file, and if so, then it doesn't need to be backed up.  Just all sorts of cool stuff.

PDF-Xchange viewer drives me nuts regarding the time it takes to render some PDFs.
I can wait for 5-10 seconds before some pages are drawn.

The Nuance PDF Reader does not exhibit that behavior at all, in fact it's really quite fast.
The slow startup is annoying though, but it still may become my default reader.
I agree.  Overall, PDF-Xchange is my favorite viewer.  It's usually fast and I love the tabbed interface.  Fast startup, and it's portable.  But you are so right: on some pdf's in can take really long to render.  I tried tweaking the performance settings, but nothing seemed to work.  It's superior to acrobat in just about everything else, just not rendering times.  I wonder why?  Just recently, I re-associated my files with Acrobat because of the rendering, but now I want to go back because I miss the tabs.

I think Bamse is onto something with this:
Well you must also remember that many times those who answer have seen same question before

If you see a snippy reply from someone telling to "google it" or something similar, chances are that the person who wrote that takes very seriously their obligation to help people find answers to questions when people are really stuck.  So when they see someone asking a question that they feel could have been answered by the person themself if they only bothered to search, they may feel a little like an emergency room doctor dealing with someone at the front of the line complaining about a splinter -- wanting you to move along and come back when you really need help.
That's definitely the category I fit in!!  I know I'm a little bit of a prima donna sometimes.  I do like to start threads.  But even this is a big grey area.  I have no problem googling stuff and researching on my own.  But google is currently like trying to find the needle in the haystack.  And most forums' searching abilities are so painfully horrible, it makes you not want to use it.  Man, I still remember trying to find stuff in the foobar forum...that was a nightmare.  I know I've repeated this a lot, but the reason why I use this forum so much is primarily because the forum design is so intuitive, effective, and dare I say...Apple-like!  I mean, i love the people here and they are probably the nicest group I've ever encountered online, but it's the forum design that really keeps me here.

But yeah, my flaw is definitely the negative Nancy, squeaky wheel type.  I think I'm pretty good with offering help when I can, but I do complain quite a bit.  I know that.  I can't help it.  Everyone who knows me knows that I'm a highly irritable guy.  I'm getting better at keeping it in check, especially at work.  But sometimes...sometimes I just need a break!

I also tend to make a mountain out of a mole hill.  Just yesterday, i was ranting about how the perfect htpc remote control doesn't exist.  The best air-mouse right now is the Logitech MX Air.  As a mouse, it's pretty awesome.  But it doesn't have a directional pad.  And those remotes that have directional pads (like the Logitech harmony universal remotes) don't have good mouse features.  You need both!  That's why I thought the wii remote for a pc would be perfect.  however, I highly doubt the mouse part works as well as the MX Air.  So if anyone wants to manufacture this, you'd be a millionaire!!  Or not...sometimes, I'm the only one that cares about these things...

Wow!!  Is he out of his mind!?  I had no idea, man.  Wow.  it almost makes me want to stop using his program.  I don't agree with that at all.
Why do all big companies want to ruin our freedom?  They continue to show such disdain for the people.  I'm sorry, but the Eugene is nuts.  The man has lost touch with the people.  I love how companies always take the easy way out when things get complicated.  There are viruses?  Oh my, we should shut down the internet!  People are unlocking their cell phones??  Oh my, we should shut down the 3G network!  The smart people can figure out solutions that make both sides happy.  The lazy say just shut it down.

Well, I probably shouldn't come off sounding too holier-than-thou myself.  I've noticed I've been a little more irritable about this lately, I don't know why.  Probably related to work or something.  I could probably stand to be a little more patient and not so high strung about it.

I think I started getting all pissy about it when I realized how useless Google was becoming.  I felt like this great information highway has degenerated to just a bunch of useless words and images.  Forums like this are like my last resort.  if I get nothing from here, what do I have left?  Wikipedia?

I almost want to start an ultra-efficient, no-nonsense website for just accurate information.  Real answers to real questions.  To side-discussion, no nonsense solutions.  No kind of, sort of.  No fun stuff, no ads, nothing long-winded.  Not a place to hang out or anything like that.  Just answers.  whatever.  Just the idea is pretty impractical.  Ha.

I meant support section of site not so much forum - which you can use for searching, tried "slow"? I thought they helped with removal of infections as well but apparently not. Most similar forums are also protective of their stuff and even most neutral or almost neutral security forums are also crazy if you ask for help, like insist on removing any p2p software, including utorrent. They must have policies any idiot can follow or they risk doing wrong :)
I searched their forum and support pretty thoroughly last month, and didn't find any particularly useful information.  Again, it's hard to go to the actual developer's forum and try to get an unbiased answer.  If I say my computer is slow because of Kaspersky, they'll say "No, you just have some conflicting settings with other programs."  I can't really ask what are the effects of disabling certain components and expect an honest answer.  They'll say, "Well, we don't recommend putting yourself at risk, and if configured properly, the components should not be slowing your computer down."  So we go around in circles with no solution.

But the real problem is: Security software will slow down your computer.  The manufacturer will not want to help you to figure which components can be disabled for performance.  That will be like admitting their software is bloated.  Why would they do that?  So they will always revert back to, "What is wrong with your computer?  Surely, it can't be Kaspersky!"

Most other forums are really really bad and unhelpful.  That's why I just stick to here if I can help it.

Living Room / Why do we go out of our way to be unhelpful in forums?
« Last post by superboyac on September 28, 2010, 12:22 PM »
I already know this is going to start a fire, but I need to get it off my chest.  This is my favorite forum, so I won't do this anywhere.  This is partly to just have fun and provoke you guys into an interesting discussion, and partly to try to understand the situation.

OK...as google continues to fail me in my research, I continually have to turn to my trusted forums to find information.  I am disturbed by the trend of answers that I continue to see.  A lot of the time when someone asks a question, the answer given usually boils down to (more or less):
"Just google it"

Now, a lot of people don't say that literally, but that's essentially the meat of their answers.  For example, someone will ask a question about software, and someone will respond with a link to the developer's site and maybe even regurgitate some information found on the website.  To me, this usually indicates that the responder hasn't actually used the software, but just read the website and thought it would be helpful to post the information.  The intent is fine, but it's not really helpful.  I mean, we all know how to google, we all know how to read.  That's not the point.  What is it that YOU know that is not generic information available on product websites?  I mean, really?

Often times, people will also give a link to somewhere that may contain an answer.  That link may be to a forum thread, an article, etc.  But, if you truly want to be helpful, why not past the actual sentences that are helpful into the thread yourself in a quote or something?  By just posting the link, you are making the other person go through the work sifting through all the threads, posts, paragraphs to find the relevant info.  If you indeed saw the information, why not be a good person and post it for the person?

The answer (in my opinion) is that people who do that don't really know the answer.  The THINK the answer may be in that forum or article, but they probably haven't really read it.  it's like a guess.  Which is bad, because now you are sending the poor guy to read a bunch of stuff that may not lead to anything.  I just don't get that.  At the very least, say in the post that "this MAY have something for you, but I'm not sure."  But I think people are afraid to say "I don't know".

Anyway, just venting a little.  I'm sure you guys have noticed in a lot of the threads I've started recently a little more surly sentences and stuff.  For recommendations, I usually explicitly state that I want to hear of YOUR personal experiences and opinions with things you have actually used.  That is valuable to me.  Sending me around to read third-party reviews and such is rarely helpful at all.  I have no trust in the reviews that are out there usually.  i don't know those people!  Most of the time, people who write reviews just write based on first glance impressions.  It's not like they have used the stuff for a while and are posting their reactions.  No.  They usually just open a box, play around for a few minutes, and write a "review".  It's useless.  Same goes for a lot of software reviews.  They install, click around for a minute, then write a review regurgitating the same info listed on the website.  Nothing substantial at all.  Again, useless.

Why do we do this to each other?

They have a huge support section for each program http://support.kaspersky.com/kis2011 Can be viewed as good consumer support or support demanding programs ;)
I am not a fan of their support forum.  First of all, i always come to DC for my questions initially.  The people here are very helpful for all things, and the forum interface is really really excellent.

In the Kaspersky forums, they always demand you send them ALL of your computer information (using the ksapersky collect information tool) before they even consider answering any questions.  And then, after sending them all your info, they tell you you're using some cracked version of some little program and because of that they can't help you.  It's almost as if they think they're the piracy police of the entire internet.

A while back, I went through this.  They found something on my computer.  I think it was some kind of hacked AIM thing my little sister was using (back when I lived with my family).  So, they got all on my case about it, saying ridiculous things like "we can't help you if you use dangerous software".  So I removed it, and had to "reprove" myself to them.  And in the end, they weren't able to help much.  I just find them to be generally a little too much holier-than-thou attitude over there.

I've got several things in KIS 2011 disabled (like spam protection). Now the stupid thing continually warns me that I'm at risk because I'm not using all those modules. Does anybody know if there's a way to say "this is the configuration I want, only bug me if it deviates from this"?
yes, open up the messages window (by clicking on the big "light" button or next to it).  Then where it shows that message, click the "hide this message" or something like that button.

Also, for more extensive notification settings, open the settings dialog and somewhere towards the bottom are some settings for notifications in a matrix display.  Just uncheck those notifications you don't want.  That's one great thing about Kaspersky, it is very customizable.

Hey, thanks!  I don't know...maybe I'm just paranoid.  Some girl once mentioned that using the phrase, "Playing with the two magnets in my pocket..." may sound a little...curious.  And I thought, "Oh Sh-t!  That DOES sound pretty...curious.  My defense is that if I had indeed meant it as a subtle metaphor, it's really not that subtle.  Hence, it was an accident.  But then you get into the whole Freudian slip argument, and so on, ... whatever.  So, in short, I really do mean actual magnets...I was NOT playing with the mojo.

I'd love to see a portable version of VueCalendar.

A portable version has been completed and is currently undergoing final testing prior to release in a couple weeks. This version has the same features as the Pro version, except it can run from a USB drive/stick and doesn't need to be installed.

Many other often-requested improvements have also been completed for the next version of Pro, such as optional word-wrapping when viewing or printing by Month. I think the next version will be the best one yet!
Oh man, I love this program.  I think I'm going to buy it just for the hell of it. I don't even use a calendar anymore!

well, I've thought about posting it anyway.  If it were interesting enough where some people can be entertained by it, I'll post it.  But if the only end result would be to show how bad it sucked, and mocking ensued, I'll avoid posting.  I don't know...I have a few things like that.  Stuff I like and am sort of proud of, but potentially too embarrassing to post.

I'm avoiding MSE for now, just because going to the big names is always last on my list.

Seeing as we have the same knowledge gap here, one of us should post a question at Wilder's
Maybe I just won't use a firewall.  How crazy is that?  What if I had everything else going nicely, but I didn't have a firewall?  How much risk am I actually incurring?  I used to just have AV and malware stuff without a firewall.  Do I really need one?  I'd really like to do away with it.

I don't think there is a non-bloated, fast and lean firewall to be found anymore.
If that's the case, all the more reason to find out if I can just do away with a software firewall.

When I changed my ISP and got a dynamic IP address behind a router, I dropped firewalls altogether.
I also use DynDns (I don't know how you do it).  Is that really an alternative to a firewall?

ugh...so embarrassing.  I'm a tech geek, i don't really know how to write.  plus, I wrote it when i was a teenager and really naive, stupid, boring, etc.  I don't know.  It's pretty embarrassing...I'll think about it.  I even had it printed in some weird magazine at UC Berkeley my freshman year.  Also, maybe it's just me, but I feel some of the imagery I used in the story may lead some people to think I'm a closet homosexual, but I'm not (not that there's anything wrong with that!).  I don't know, I feel weird about it.  I feel like people will read it and say all sorts of weird Freudian stuff about me and make me feel uncomfortable about it because that's not what I meant, but I can see where they're coming from, so I can't say it's not valid.  Ugh!!!
