Living Room / Re: SATA III - why no better rating than SATA II ?
« Last post by Ath on February 20, 2011, 06:07 AM »
Still don't really understand why SATA III drives on a SATA III interface don't see an improvement in system rating ???
That system rating actually measures the data transfer speed. As your SATA II interface already offers enough throughput to deliver the full potential of your disk, SATA III isn't needed, nor does it improve, the transferspeed to & from the disk.
You need a faster disk (or one with a higher burst-transfer, achievable by a big on-disk cache, but the system-rating probably has counter-measures to avoid falling into that trap) to require the need (and see any improvement) of a SATA III interface.

IMHO the desktop is just 1 location (folder) for each user, plus 1 location system-wide ('All Users' desktop folder) that are merged into the view that you have on your screens. Just the coordinates of the short-cut-icon determines where it is 'located'.
AFAIK, new icons can't be easily 'steered' into a specific position. Windows just picks the first available position (top to bottom, left to right on LTR (left to right writing) Windows) on the main desktop.

Workaround:
  • Create folders on your desktop for each monitor you have (DL-Screen-left, DL-Screen-middle, DL-Screen-right)
  • Drag each folder to the corresponding monitor
  • Download any file into the correct folder, your initial download location should be 'Desktop', so you can browse easily into the right sub-folder
To make the last item easier, you could use separate browser-brands on each monitor (IE, FF, Chrome, Opera), but you'd have a bit of trouble keeping favorites synched.

I'd suggest to only pursue this request at your new thread in the Coding Snacks section, over here. That's the best place for it.

General Software Discussion / Re: DVCS ?
« Last post by Ath on February 19, 2011, 02:59 PM »
... But since I have perfectionist tendencies...
With that said: Do get some kind of VCS!

If working alone or in a small local team (in the same office): Get SVN, it's easy to set up (locally) and very well documented.
If working in a geographically 'wide area' or a large group of people, get GIT or Mercurial and a hosted central server, or create a project at SourceForge with SVN if somebody really wants that to be used.

Or a (small) donation to the person that helped you out so nicely :-[

It came formatted Fat32.
Bummer :o But that's not something you can't easily fix.

If I'd need another thumb-drive I'd probably get one of those too, even without the LED indicator.
And I think it looks decent as well.

Thanks for the mini-mini-review.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to make every app portable?
« Last post by Ath on February 17, 2011, 03:25 PM »
Isn't that just a collection of apps that happen to be portable?
Yep, but there's a quite huge collection already. Most likely all the OP needs is there :D
I think the only true way to take your setup with you would be as a complete virtual PC running in virtualbox or similar.
That would have 2 disadvantages:
  • You'd need a quite big USB drive
  • You still have to install the virtualization platform before you can do anything

What happens when the user forgets their password?

They get slapped on the cheek, and sent to the KeePass website :-[

it shows how long it took the DC server to create and serve a page.  That will normally be < 1second.  If that is short and it took a long time for the page to load in your browser anyway, then you know the problem is not on our server but on the wider network.
That probably doesn't include the load-time of any graphics on the page, like embedded images and user-avatars. I get page times often between 0.02s and 0.04s, but the entire page can take up to 10 seconds to load. Mostly depending on the amount of graphics, IMHO.

Wasn't there a CSnack creating directories listed in a file? (no time to check right now)

I'll pledge at least 1 from the Unfinished CSnacks section. (There's 1 I'm thinking about right now). And more if I can find a way to solve some more requests. I'll check that later this week (or weekend) and possibly re-pledge that one.

XSLT and FOP is useful for presenting (structured) data, generated elsewhere, not being produced/modified from a wordprocessor or something like it. So you're correct in selecting (LaTeX/Any document management system) for maintaining your docs.

Still glad I didn't get one of those :o It's totally not worth the annoyance.

Okay, so I finally got some specs to compare to. I ended up building my sister a better machine for about $300 less than what the other person was trying to sell her.
Wanna share those final specs?

It looks like at first glance that that tool will require some serious configuration to convert an xml file to a nice output.

Sure would be nice to have something automated that maybe could read an xml file and make some reasonable assumptions in order to generate a nice looking layout.. or maybe use a kind of gui tool to let you configure the arrangements of fields for pretty printing..

Quess there is a tool for that already. Didn't look close lately (researched it a bit about 5 - 7 years ago), but I wouldn't start a project without finding all the tools for creating either FOP layouts or full-blown XSLT layouts.

That's where XSLT comes in :)
