General Software Discussion / Re: Photo Recovery for Android

You can also use the photo sync/backup features with other programs/apps such as:

It may help to have multiple backups in multiple locations. Redundancy is key to preventing data loss!

I completely missed the awesome new major feature that is Drop-Combine. Might I recommend an easier to read/parse changelog, something like so:

v4.8.7 Beta - September 20, 2014
  • [MajorFeature] New action available when dropping an image file onto the current image: Combine images. Let's you easily line up images side by side with automatic scaling.
  • [Feature] Added commandline option to change save file format.
  • [Feature] Added tools menu to SC system tray menu.
  • [Feature] You can now use cursor (arrow) keys to adjust cursor location during shift+PrtScr selected region capture.
  • [Feature] Made it easier to abort scrolling and other capture operations (tray menu changes to display a cancel operation item).
  • [MinorFeature] When loading settings, if a corrupt settings file is discovered, a timestamped copy of the last good backup is made so that it will not be overwritten.
  • [MinorFeature] Added Up/Down keys to scrolling capture methods.
  • [MinorFeature] Better instructions for manual scrolling captures.
  • [MinorChange] The shortcut for deleting the current screenshot has been changed from Ctrl+Q to Ctrl+Delete.
  • [BugFix] DPI was sometimes not set properly if SC was set to not save image automatically.
  • [BugFix] It was possible to restore main SC window and then minimize it during scrolling capture, rendering all SC windows invisible.
  • [BugFix] Red box was flickering in object selection mode.
  • [BugFix] SaveAs was saving .object files even when this option was disabled in options.

My 12½ y/o daughter sent me this link. It's actually got some interesting and some funny stuff there on that site.
[Link removed]

Hi IainB,

I think that link was completely inappropriate, both for this thread and for DC at large. Further, I'd appreciate if you kept posts that single out and make fun of particular political or religious views out of the "silly humor" thread. Just because you find some kind of wry, sardonic humor out of it, doesn't mean it belongs in this thread. This thread is meant for lighthearted and fun humor.

Please help keep this thread lighthearted.

Why would you use Software?  Why not blueprint it, or use general woodworking plans to do it?

People use software to make blueprints (drafting) these days. It's called AutoCAD. :P

I've heard of people making their own mattress before. Just curious how DIY you were going with this project. (c:

You're going to build the entire bed? Including the mattress? Or just the frame?

Didn't ZeniMax/Bethesda/id Software recently sue John Carmack, saying all the ideas he had about VR Goggles while he worked at id belong to id? He is now working for Oculus Rift/Facebook.

NECRO-THREAD ARISE!

I was just hanging out in #Unity3D on Freenode (IRC) and saw NicklasNygren (Nifflas) talking about some things he's done recently in Unity. Here's one of them:

It's a cool, short game. Try it out.

So, I just removed the All Seeing Eye.

I had a very difficult time finding anything in my browsing history with it. I was trying to find a site that I had closed only hours earlier and it brought up all sorts of useless and unrelated results, even though I was using exact words from the page's title.

I wish it was better. It certainly sounded great, but in practice I've found it to be... not very good at all. :(

How is it powered? Flintstones-style?  :D

This 3D Printing technology is pretty cool. I'm excited for when it becomes a bit more refined, less prone to totally botching up, and much less expensive.

I detest the action of opinionated bullying and victimisation even more.

You probably need to grow a stronger spine, mate.

So you're bullying him into submitting to the actions you and your strongly-held opinions dictate that he take by calling him spineless?

Sorry, but it doesn't look as clever saying a brand new phone is better than a year old phone (iPhone 6 vs. Nexus 5) as it does saying a two year old phone is better than a brand new phone (Nexus 4 vs iPhone 6).

It just looks smug and dishonest. But that's Apple/iPhone fans for you. :P

This one made me laugh despite myself:

General Software Discussion / Re: New BitTorrent client needed, suggestions please?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 12, 2014, 10:57 AM »
Thanks! I'm not sure why I didn't think to just go to an older version of uTorrent! I've done that and things seem to be working fine. The only thing I miss is being able to access it using uTorrent Remote on my Android devices (or on the web). But that was something I rarely used, so it's worth giving up.

General Software Discussion / New BitTorrent client needed, suggestions please?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 12, 2014, 12:47 AM »
Hi folks,

I've been using and loving uTorrent for years, but ever since they got bought out by BitTorrent some time ago, it's gotten pretty bad.

What I loved about it was how tiny and resource-light it was, and the un-bloated nature of it all. But now it's just getting bloated with a bunch of crap I don't want or need, and the ads are pretty seedy.

Take these two ads, for example:

Great contenders for "Photoshop Disasters"
2014-09-11_2320.png 2014-09-11_2328.png

There is so much wrong with those ads... I might expect to see ads like that on some sort of warez site. It hurts my trust in uTorrent.

So I'm here to ask the DC community: What BitTorrent client do you use, and why should I switch to it? Got any recommendations?

Thanks!

DC Gamer Club / One Chance: A game you can only play once
« Last post by Deozaan on September 11, 2014, 02:25 PM »
Here's an interesting looking game called One Chance which only allows you to play it once.

One Chance is a game quite unlike any you have ever played online. It is about a scientist who created a pathogen that is inadvertantly wiping out all mankind on Earth. You then have six in-game days to decided how you will spend the rest of your life. Will you stay at the office and do all you can to find a cure? Will you finally step away from the office and spend some time with the family you have been neglecting? Or will the madness and impending doom jusr cause you to lose your mind?

What really sets One Chance apart is that you really only have One Chance to play it. The game picks up on your I.P and unless you have multiple computers with multiple I.P's, you really only do get one chance in One Chance, which is part of what makes it so spectacular.

(It actually just stores a cookie, so you can play it again if you clear your cookies or use Incognito/Private browsing mode.)

This is kind of a non-issue now that there are things like Android Wear, which has about 80-90% of the benefits and convenience of Glass without the drawbacks including potential privacy invasion of others.

If you're still waiting to hear about your free board from MS, you can stop holding your breath. You're not getting one.

Here's an excerpt from an email I just received from Microsoft (emphasis added):

While we are continuing our program, we have finished allocating all the Intel Galileo boards that we purchased. If you were allocated a kit then you should have received either a tracking number or an email saying a kit was allocated to you. If you haven’t received either of those two emails you will still be able to participate in the Windows Developer Program for IoT using a retail board.

Living Room / Re: What Google (and others) know about you
« Last post by Deozaan on September 04, 2014, 12:41 PM »
I can't take that article seriously.

His first big scary thing is how Google tracks your location if you have an Android phone with location tracking enabled. Well duh! Of course Google tracks your location when you have enabled location tracking.

He then goes on to say that it can even track your location while the phone is off. Oh noes! This does sound very scary indeed, and a major breach of privacy. But this is where he loses all credibility with me. He then defines "off" as meaning the phone is on and ready to receive calls/texts/notifications, but the screen is blank. Does anybody really think their phone is off when the screen is sleeping?

I couldn't even be bothered reading the rest of the article after that.

As a child, I actually liked those horrifying stories and one of my prized possessions was an antique fairy tale book, given to me by my grandmother. That's right, no cleaned up G-rated stuff for me. I left that Disneyfied junk for my over-sensitive little sister.

[...]

You are supposed to cry at the end of this story, not do a happy dance.

I hate sanitized versions of fairy tales. It's worse than music with the foul language beeped out.

The entire story is just really sad.

It's sad to think that someone could do all those awful things to Eron, being so manipulative, abusive, and psyophaticw in general.

And then it's sad to think of all the hurt and pain and anguish that Zoe must have gone through herself in order to be molded into that kind of a person. My heart goes out to both of them, and I really hope that Zoe gets the help she needs to heal those wounds that led to this behavior, so that she doesn't further propagate the cycle of abuse.
