Image Manager Shootout / Re: Where is Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0??
« Last post by nudone on April 12, 2006, 02:50 AM »
oh, just remembered, with keywords you don't have to keep typing them in manually. once you've created them you can use the 'keyword picker' box to click on the keywords you want. dare i say it - does this offer even more power for 'tagging' your images than photoshop elements? not only do we have 'categories/tags' but we also have the power of 'keywords' also.

thanks, moerl, that is a fantastic reply. i'll have to read it a couple of times again to get all of your points. there is one thing i'd like to point out immediately, though, and that is the bit i said about having the 'properties - database' pane open in acdsee. you seem to have missed this area, which is unfortunate as it's the bit where you can assign multiple tags in a relatively simply manner. please don't mistake this with the 'organise' panel - that is used for selecting images after they have been tagged. i admit it's not as neat as how 'photoshop elements' does it - you can't drag multiple tags at a time but you can select the image(s) you want tagging and then quickly click the check boxes in the 'PROPERTIES - Database -organise' panel to get the job done. i think the amount of clicking involved in this task will be pretty even between acdsee and photoshop elements.

i see your point about image stacks but i don't quite understand why you can't create 'sub' tags in acdsee. saying photoshop elements makes more sense because it has categories and tags but they do different things i'm not sure about either. why not just embrace the word category and let acdsee do it. i can create sub categories and move them around between other categories, delete them, rename them and move them to the 'root' level of the tree - is this what you had a problem with - i admit moving a category back to the root was a bit tricky at first.

by 'claustrophobic' i pretty much meant 'where's the folder structures'. i know, i know, that isn't how photoshop elements works. it's just taking too much away for my liking. i need more customisation options too. like Zaine, i like to change the layout of a program if it will allow it. i like the most common buttons i use to be there in view at all times. with acdsee i can chop and change the layout to my liking and then take it further still by saving different layouts for different tasks.

i've got to dash to work now but i'll reread your last post again and try to reply again.

well, i doubt this is going to be any kind of great revalation but i'm sticking with acdsee.

i've spent a bit of time with 'imatch' but it just feels like something i would have used on windows 95. i'm sure it must be good for metadata but i wouldn't recommend it for anything else.

and, photoshop elements doesn't really do it for me either. just like adobe album i would say (if you disregard the editor part). yep, the tagging kind of looks funky and nice but i don't really see how it improves greatly upon what acdsee does. if anything, it feels claustrophobic and too restrictive in how you've got to work with it. i guess that's great if you fit into it's way of thinking.

i'll admit i want 'power' and the most options available at all times and i can appreciate that that isn't going to suit everyone.

i'm just glad i got used to using acdsee when i did. it was the right choice for me.

now come, join me brothers, and let us all gather around and thank ACDSystems for creating ACDSee Pro.

Hrm, I didn't think IE6 supported PNG alpha?

that's what the javascript png alpha workaround is for - to work with IE 5.5 and 6.

i guess we are saying, if someone is still using IE 5 or earlier, or has javascript turned off then they won't be experiencing the web in the way most designers intended anyway. these people will be used to seeing ugly page layouts and obviously don't care about it either.

so, i guess i'm saying the png trick isn't such a bad idea afterall. you can't please all of the browsers all of the time now can you.

i can't remember the links (maybe i've saved them somewhere) that went through the various ways of getting png alpha to work with IE based browsers. the overall conclusion was that it wasn't a 100% working method and that the 'trick' would fail without much predictability as to when it would do so. this was a great headache when designing 'cody' as the final version had to be gif but i would have liked it to be png because of the alpha transparency.

maybe the method described above is the definitive working method for png in IE, i don't know. i'd just be very wary of using such methods as you just don't know when one of your visitors is going to break the way it works and then view your website in a way you didn't intend. maybe the risk is so small it's not worth being concerned about?

good point, slave138. i'll resend the emails (no reply as yet). i'l make it a minor point to ask about used CD stores as this kind of sale has been going on for years so i suspect it isn't of major concern - i would also expect that the volume of downloads for an album far exceeds the number sold from used CD stores.

I take your point, i've been anoyed by that problem too.
The buffer idea might solve it, I'll try implementing it. Shouldn't be much of a problem doing it, i'm only afraid it'll take more time.
I'll try, and we'll see! ;)

You're right, there was an error in the code, and every window was being moved. It's fixed now.
I also added the hotkey to add the window to the detectable windows. F10 is now associated with that function.

.exe file: http://jgpaiva.dcmem...om/CS/DialogMove.exe
.ahk file: http://jgpaiva.dcmem...om/CS/DialogMove.ahk

I just found a huge bug. I'm trying to fix it, but it might take some time. I'll post again when fixed.

oh dear, i thought it was working quite well.

can i just also ask if you implemented the 'not move the window if it's already close to the cursor' feature. the dialogs that do jump seem to jump even when the cursor is very close to them - even if the cursor is within a few pixels of the dialog's edge.

is that last version working correctly, i'm finding that it's moving every window i open not just the small ones.

definitely add a hotkey - the more user options the better.

it might be too early to say how the 'final' version should work. maybe it requires that there are several user 'modes'.

i'm just playing around at the moment with it moving larger windows than what i originally hoped for.

this does work well for the most part but i've also noticed one annoying thing. as a new dialog is found it moves it to the cursor - great. that's good. but if there are other small windows that you have got open at the same time they obviously jump to the cursor as they become the window with focus. this is what you'd expect to happen of course as that is what 'dialogmove' is meant to do.

but...

if the small windows have been manually positioned on screen and they have been open for a while then it isn't required that they jump to the cursor. really, it's only the 'new' dialog windows that appear that ought to jump - not the ones you've positioned. i know this is extending the definition of what i originally requested but i'm wondering could a 'buffer' be built into the script so that manually positioned windows stay were they are until they have been closed. on opening again they would be 'new' and so would be expected to jump to the cursor again.

as for the several modes i speak of, i'm thinking along the lines of 'yes' to the new features you've mentioned above - that seems an essential feature to have. but how about trying to cover every eventuality. so, can we have 'detectable' windows always move, 'notdetectable' windows never move, windows below a particular 'height' always move (system dialog messages appear to be quite short in height and can be quite wide), windows below a set height and width move or don't move depending the users preference, windows above a set height and width never move (maybe that redundant).

er, i think there was more but i can't think now, maybe that was all there was. i'm just trying to think how 'dialogmove' can work in a 'fuzzy' way as there appears to be a grey area of what is expected to move and what isn't.

call me mr.dumb because i've just been trying things out with 'find and run robot' with it set to search all my drives (4 drives, loads of gig in files) and i have to say that i'm getting results that make me question why i would use 'vistaglance'.

the search time with 'find and run robot' isn't instantaneous but it's fast enough for me to not really notice much of a delay (we are talking only a second or two for it to match my search term to a file, regardless of how deep the path of the folder). the only thing lacking is that only files are matched and not folders.

i can see why the aim of 'vistaglance' is to use some form of artificial intelligence to provide more functions as it does need to do more than a simple file/folder search - i can use 'find and run robot' to what i want, or i will be able to when the ability for folders to appear in the search results in implemented.

i shall try 'vistaglance' for a little while longer but i'm thinking that 'find and run robot' is going to cater for my needs.

well, i had started to write quite a lengthy piece but one of the suggestions/complaints i was making - to do with the keyboard shortcuts - has just made me accidentally close the window i was typing in so i've lost everything. i will attempt to write a shorter version now...

thanks for coming back with a new version, Konstantin.

i'd still like to see more keyboard integration so that it's easy to navigate through the float bar and search results. i'd like to be able to move between the results and the search bar with a single key press so that i can quickly amend my searches if they don't provide the results i want - this doesn't appear to happen at the moment, it's just a one way direction from search bar to results - or am i not doing it right?

i'd also like to be able to use the 'win' key instead of 'ctrl' or 'alt' or 'shift' to bring up the float bar. i'm already using programs that have taken up nearly every 'ctrl', 'alt', 'shift' key combination so being able to use the 'win' key is essential for me.

just making more use of the keyboard to get things done with 'vistaglance' is the main thing but i'd still like to see a non skinned version too  :)

is it okay if i talk about how good 'dialogmove' is that jgpaiva has finally managed to put together from my request. i could probably talk all day about it and how it will one day revolutionise the face of home computing. am i joking - we'll see...

looks nice (though, a bit dark) - if you want me to be picky i'd say position the object so that it appears to be spinning around it's central tube that's at the top - that way i think it would look like a smooth spin.

brilliant. that's made a big difference. using the F9 key has solved my shrinking windows woes.

i do find that i get better results with the PredefWinHeight value to more than 400, say, 500 pixels. not really had time to test things with normal use so i can't say which system windows will or will not be caught be this value.

it all seems to be working pretty well to me at the moment so i have to say i'm thrilled with what you've been able to do.

if you think of further improvements it would be great to hear of them. the only things i can think of are cosmetic so aren't really worth mentioning.
